Application Note State University of New York – Stony Brook – Ph.D in Chemistry I PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Ph.D program in Chemistry at Stony Brook aims to train a new generation of scientists to take leadership positions in research and teaching Our department ranks among the best in the world, and we pride ourselves on the strength of the interactions between our graduate students and faculty Graduate students conduct research in a wide range of fields, including core chemistry areas such as Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry and more interdisciplinary fields such as Bioorganic, Computational and Materials Chemistry Joint and affiliated faculty provide integral connections to other departments on campus, including Biochemistry, Geosciences, Materials Science, Physics, Pharmacology, Applied Math, and the Medical School, and to Brookhaven National Lab, including the BNL Center for Functional Nanomaterials and theNational Synchrotron Light Source Research in the Chemistry Department is supplemented with an active seminar program, including special symposia throughout the year Members of the department join in active discussions of current research and literature via our student seminar series and annual Chemistry Research Day Most students also have the opportunity to attend national and international scientific meetings Optional workshops provide further opportunities for interested students to develop their professional skills, focusing on areas such as research mentoring and proposal writing The department prizes excellence in teaching by both its faculty and graduate students Stony Brook’s bright and enthusiastic undergraduates provide our graduate students with a stimulating and rewarding teaching experience Graduate students also interact closely with the faculty who teach the undergraduate courses, and they often develop long-lasting relationships as a consequence of such collaborations Graduate students who have excelled in teaching and research are honored at the department’s yearly awards ceremony The quality of the education and training offered by our program is reflected by the participation of many affiliated faculty outside of the core department, and outstanding outcomes for some 750 Ph.D graduates who hold excellent positions at educational institutions and in industry In the last 17 years, we have graduated 360 students, with an average time to degree of about 1/2 years, with over 80% of our students graduating in no more than years after entering the program https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/chemistry/education/phd-program/index.php II DEADLINE Although we will consider an application file at any time and we not have a Application Note deadline, it will be to your advantage to apply by January Support is provided through teaching and research assistantships and industrial, university and departmental fellowships Earlier applications are encouraged, particularly for international students and those wishing to be considered in the campus-wide competition for Graduate Council Fellowships For the 2019-2020 academic year, the Ph.D student stipend will be $30,000 a year (plus subsidized health insurance and a full tuition scholarship) In addition, based on the merit of their application and recommendations, we will offer selected students a one-time $4,000 recruitment bonus , to be paid in their first semester at Stony Brook University, bringing their first-year stipend to a total of $34,000 https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/chemistry/education/phdprogram/PhDHowtoApply III.ADMISSION REQUIREMENT  What is the required GPA? The minimum required GPA is 3.0  How I send my Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores? Official scores from the General Test of the GRE must be sent to Stony Brook University, Code 2548  Is the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Subject Test in Chemistry required? The subject GRE test is optional  Do I need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)? As an international student, for admission with financial support to the Ph.D program, you must demonstrate English proficiency prior to matriculation Please see the Graduate School’s requirements here To be considered for admission , you must present a passing total score and speaking section score for either the TOEFL or IELTS tests  What is the required minimum Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score? There is no minimum required score on the GRE  What is the required minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score? One copy is sent to the Graduate School, while the other copy is kept in our records Are letters of recommendation required? Three letters of recommendation are required with your application If the letters are submitted by post, each recommender must seal the two (2) copies in separate envelopes and put their signature on the seal of the envelope Where can I find the recommendation form? The recommendation form is optional and can be downloaded from the "recommendations" section of the online application If you have a problem downloading the form, then have the letters sent without the form How can I get more information about the admission process or program? Official transcripts are valid when they are issued by the school you attended They have an official seal/stamp and an official signature by an appropriate academic administrative officer They are sealed by the university Official electronic transcripts, sent by authorized delivery agents, are also accepted Photocopied documents are NOT official Final transcripts state that a degree has been conferred and provide the date of conferral  What if I haven’t received my degree yet, but will have earned it by the time I would like to start graduate school? If you are in the process of completing a degree, please send an official transcript that shows your progress to this point You will need to send a final, official transcript once your degree is conferred Transcripts that not show a degree awarded will not delay application processing, but failure to submit final documentation about conferral will result in a registration block  What if I went to a college, but did not graduate? What if I just took classes there?
