Including Guidelines for Content Designation, available on-line in the Library of Congress’ Cataloger’s Desktop, and (in concise form) at http://www.loc.gov/marc/marcdocz.html Examples of U.S MARC 21 Format records are given in Appendix The categories of information used in the text for these item-level records are based in part on fields used in the Microsoft MsAccess database of papyri at the Center for the Tebtunis Papyri, The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, given in Appendix This was developed in consultation with the Papyrus Collection staff at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor The documentation for the Online Catalogue of the Duke Papyrus Collection has also been consulted Records for texts should be input in the MARC 21 Books format (Leader 06-08 coded “tma”), records for images into the MARC 21Visual Materials format (Leader 06-08 coded “kma”) The Books format applies to both manuscript and printed items, that is, textual material which is monographic in nature The MARC 21 Mixed Materials format should be applied only to archival and manuscript collections of a mixture of forms of material Make separate records for each text (MARC 21 Books format) A papyrus which is a copy or draft of another should be given its own record For papyri that have not been studied or described, generally treat texts with different hands or languages as different texts, even if on same physical fragment(s), or group of fragments Contracts are a notable exception, since a single contract may contain various hands or languages, the scribe’s, the parties to the contract, and amendments Make separate records (MARC 21 Visual Materials format) for visual image(s) painted or drawn on a papyrus which are not part of a text, for instance drawings or paintings made at time when the papyrus was used as crocodile or mummy cartonnage, including images fouind on fragment(s) of a text yet clearly made later when papyrus was used for cartonnage and not illustrative of the text A mythological, ritual, literary, medical or documentary text with illustrative images, such as the Book of the Dead (Papyrus of Ani), has one record (MARC 21 Books format) describing text and the accompanying image(s) If there is a need to create a collection-level record (MARC Books format Leader 06-08 “tca”), for an archive, dossier, archive, or similar group/collection of textual material in addition to or in place of item-level records, the guidelines in Describing Archives: a Content Standard may be helpful For transliteration, see Randall K Barry’s ALA-LC Romanization Tables For Aramaic and Syriac use the Hebrew table For Coptic use the Greek table For Pahlavi use the Persian table Presently there is no table for Egyptian Hieroglyphic, Hieratic, or Demotic Return to Contents FIXED FIELDS MARC Leader and 008 Field (RLIN layout; origin if , e.g., extracted from mummy cartonnage or reused from a roll) In the case of published papyri, this is mainly taken from the edition Notes on preservation  Gives in-house technical observations on the features of the papyrus which have hampered the imaging process or the measures that were taken to prepare the piece for imaging Physical properties  Gives some information on any physical characteristic of the papyrus (margins, creases, overlap of sheets [kollesis], ) In the case of published papyri, this is mainly taken from the edition Palaeographic Description  Gives information on the writing and the arrangement of the text: type of script (regular cursive, semi-cursive, calligraphic, etc.), script direction compared to fiber direction, number of texts (1, 2, palimpsest?), columns and column numbers, number of hands, including subscriptions and endorsements In the case of published papyri, this is mainly taken from the edition Due to lack of an uniform language to describe this aspect of papyri, searches with key-words in this field could be of less value A list of standard vocabulary should be developed in the next months Publication status  Shows whether the papyrus is published, described or unpublished 171 Paraphernalia  This field gives information about illustrations, decorations, attached seals, etc  This field gives the dates as given in the text (e.g., Fiftysecond year of Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II, 9th of the Egyptian month Pharmouthi;
