touchi ng severa l colleg es of medic ine He was a leade r, a docto r, a teach er, a ment or, a father, a husba nd, a friend Dr Heath eringt on’s work will resona te in his profes sion for years to come, especi ally in the Pacific North west Nati onal In 1969, Dr Heatheri ngton became the first physicia n from the state of Oregon to serve as the Presiden t of the America n Osteopat hic Associati on (AOA) He embrace d his presiden tial duties during a time of crisis for Califor nia DOs; a tumult uous time to take over as leader of the professi on He was well known for his sense of humor, which was an effective tool for defusing political tensions His presiden tial accepta nce speech address ed many of the moder n- day themes health care continu es to struggl e with today: access to care, balancin g technolo gy and humanis m, and the role of physicia n as “counsel or, guide, and friend.” Dr Heather ington was ahead of his time, saying “more than anythin g else, America n people are searchin g for leaders who can restore the old values of health care while develo ping new systems for deliver y We, as memb ers of the osteop athic profes sion, can provid e the Ame rican peopl e nceme nt Board Scholarship Information FamilyCare Health Plans’ J Scott Heatherington, DO, Scholar Award is focused on investing in the future of osteopathic medicine in Oregon The scholarship is to help defray the cost of attending osteopathic medical school The scholarship is awarded to COMP-Northwest students based on academic performance, community participation, and professional involvement Three $20,000 scholarships will be awarded in the 2018-2019 academic year to medical students entering their second year at COMP-Northwest Each of the recipients will be eligible for renewal of the scholarships in subsequent years based on their status as a student in good standing at COMP-Northwest J Scott Heatherington, DO Scholarship The J Scott Heatherington, DO Scholar will reflect the personality characteristics and philosophies held by Dr Heatherington, including: • Understanding of osteopathic principles and philosophy with a commitment to apply these in general practice • Managed Care program in Oregon, was created in 1984 by four individuals: Arthur Rott, DO; Bob Eubanks, Jr., DO; Carl Erickson, DO; and its current President, Jeff Heatherington, LHD They all
