Arthu r Owe n Rott, DO Scholarship Application Arthur O Rott, DO, Scholarship “Arthur was the consummate educator He always felt that he learned as much from his students as they did from him.” ~ Paul Aversano, DO A scholar, a gentleman, and an extraordinary teacher An Amba ssador of Osteo pathic Medic ine Dr Rott has long been consider ed one of the ambassa dors of osteopat hic medicine in the Northwe st An educator from the beginnin g, he was recogniz ed on three separate occasion s as the Educator of the Year by Eastm orelan d Famil y Practi ce resid ents He alway s place d emph asis on the impo rtanc e of givin g back to the profess ion by passing on his knowle dge and skills to the next generat ion D u ri n g his 27 ye ar car eer , a month rarely passed withou t Dr Rott teachin ga student or residen t He deman ded the highest standar ds from his house staff, his fellow physician s, and especially from himself Countless patients have benefited because their doctors were trained under his guidance and mentorsh ip Career Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Dr Rott attended Wayne State Universit y, majoring in psycholog y He earned his DO degree at the Chicago College of Osteopat hic Medicin e in 1973 After graduati on, he complete da rotating internshi p and Internal Medicin e residenc y at Zieger– Botsford Hospital A fellowsh ip in hem atol ogy and med ical onc olog y follo wed at Marti n Place Hosp ital all three areas in 1982, becomin g the youngest He osteopat becam hic e physician boardaccompli certifie shing d in this feat to date Dr Rott moved to Portland, Oregon in 1979, where he was in practice until retiring in 2006 Lasting Impact B eyo nd his wor k in the hos pita l and clin ic, Dr Ro tt fo un d ti m e to se rv e hi s pr of es si on an d co m m un ity At East more land Hosp ital, he was Chief of Staff and serve d six years as the Direct or of Medic al Educat ion He was on the Board of Truste es of the Multn omah Count y Medic al Societ y; and a member of the Boar d of Direc tors of the Oste opath ic Physi cians and Surg eons of Oreg on (OPS O) In 2003, OPS O na me d him DO of the Year Two years later, he was presen ted with the J Scott Heath eringt on, DO, Awar d He served as adjunc t faculty at Weste rn Unive rsity since its incept ion Dr Rott’s career demon strates a lifetim e of exempl ary contrib utions to osteop athic medica l educati on His leaders hip, commu nity service , and student , residen t, and physici an mentor ing had farreachin g influen ce, signific antly impacti ng the health care provide d in the Northw est His humani stic approac h to medical care and his high standar ds serve as exampl es to all who follow him A r r i v i n g t o O r e g o n i n 1979, he trained more than 137 residents and interns , not includ ing the many medic al studen ts who interac ted with Dr Rott throug h the years Dean Paula M Crone, DO, of Weste rn Unive rsity of Health Scienc es COM PNorth west, and many others taught by Dr Rott have becom e osteop athic leaders They all practic e with distinc tion in our comm unity today With sadness , the osteopa thic professi on lost this champi on in May 2012 to cancer His dedicati on to the osteopa thic professi on, his colleagu es, friends and family will never be forgotten Dr R ot t m ar ri e d, C hr is ti, in 6, a m ar ri ag e th at en du re d un til h i s p a s s i n g i n 2 I n 98 0, th e yo un g co up le d a so n, Ba rry , wh o is no w an os te op at hic ph ysi ci a n a n d C O M P A l u m n u s Scholarship Information FamilyCare Health Plans’ Arthur O Rott, DO, Scholar Award is focused on investing in the future of osteopathic medicine in Oregon The scholarship is to help defray the cost of attending osteopathic medical school The scholarship is awarded to COMP-Northwest students based on academic performance, community participation, and professional involvement Two $20,000 scholarships will be awarded in the 2018-2019 academic year to medical students entering their second year at COMP-Northwest Each of the recipients will be eligible for renewal of the scholarships in subsequent years based on their status as a student in good standing at COMP-Northwest Arthur O Rott, DO Scholarship The Arthur O Rott, DO, Scholar will reflect the personality characteristics and philosophies held by Dr Rott, including: • Propensity and enjoyment of teaching patients and peers • Creative leadership and ability to inspire others Applicants will also be evaluated on: • Commitment to practice in the Northwest • Academic performance • CV or resume • Recommendations • Personal essay Application Requirements Completed FamilyCare Health Plans’ J Scott Heatherington, DO scholarship application Current CV or resume Two letters of recommendation* Personal essay* Applicant’s photo Letter of good standing from the Registrar’s Office Limited to students from Oregon *See application for details A student may only apply for either the Heatherington and Rott scholarship, but not both Applications must be delivered to the COMP-Northwest Financial Aid Office no later than 5:00 p.m on June 15, 2018 for the 2018-2019 academic year Late or incomplete applications will not be considered Please submit required application materials to: Western University of Health Sciences COMP-Northwest, Office of Financial Aid 200 Mullins Drive Lebanon, OR 97355 Scholarship Eligibility/Criteria • A minimum 3.0 GPA is required • Limited to students from Oregon • Applicant must be a medical student in good standing, entering their second year at COMP-Northwest • The selection committee reserves the right to request additional materials, references, letters of support, and information necessary to evaluate the student’s application Application Requirements • Completed Arthur O Rott, DO, scholarship application • Current curriculum vitae or resume;
