FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY SPORTS MEDICINE AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR PROGRAM Written on 4-11-02 AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR PROGRAM The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program at Florida Atlantic University has four LIFEPAK 500 AED units Boca Raton Fire and Rescue donated two units to Florida Atlantic University, in accordance with enclosed memorandum, and two units were donated to Florida Atlantic University by Boca Raton Community Hospital In accordance to the memorandum the two AED units donated by Boca Raton Fire and Rescue must be returned if Florida Atlantic University decides to eliminate its AED program The four units are numbered and clearly labeled Units #1 and #2 are the Boca Raton Fire and Rescue donations and units #3 and #4 are the Boca Raton Community Hospital units One AED unit will be permanently placed in each athletic training room The remaining two units will be available for the team with the highest priority AED #1 AED #2 AED #3 AED #4 - Tom Oxley Center Athletic Training Suite Fieldhouse Athletic Training Room Florida Atlantic University team with the highest priority Florida Atlantic University team with the highest priority Priority for AED usage will be based on the following conditions: Competition/Scrimmage has priority over practice Home games have priority over away games Team priority: Football Men’s Basketball Women’s Basketball Baseball Softball Men’s soccer Women’s soccer Women’s track and field/CC Volleyball 10 Men’s Tennis 11 Women’s Tennis 12 Swimming & Diving 13 Cheerleading 14 Men’s Golf 15 Women’s Golf Parameters used to determine priority include: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) occurs in male athletes more than female athletes SCD occurs in black athletes more than any other race of athletes Men’s basketball has the highest reports of SCD followed closely by football Blunt injuries to the chest can cause ventricular fibrillation The FAU Medical Director will have the final decision over AED priority USAGE The AED units are permitted for use only to personnel who are authorized by the Florida Atlantic University Medical Director, who have CPR training, and who have AED training equivalent to that recommended by the American Heart Association The following people have satisfied the above requirements: Jamie Pinyan Robin Peterson Brian Anderson Josh Beaumont Randy Warren Andrea Harrison The AED units are to be used only on patients in cardiopulmonary arrest The patient must be unconscious, pulseless, and not breathing spontaneously before the device is used to analyze the patient’s ECG rhythm Do not use on children less than eight years of age SAFETY The following are general warning and caution statements concerning the AED units: -Do not attempt to operate the AED units unless thoroughly familiar with their operating instructions, and the function of all controls, indicators, connections, and accessories -Do not disassemble defibrillator -Do not immerse any portion of the AED units in water or other fluids -Do not use this device in the presence of flammable gases or anesthetics -Avoid operating the AED units near cauterizers, diathermy equipment, or cellular phones Maintain equipment separation of at least four feet -Always have access to a spare, fully charged, properly maintained battery INSPECTION Inspections will be done on a monthly basis and after each use per the operating instructions manual The AED Operator’s Checklist will be used for the monthly and after use inspections The AED units also perform self-tests every twenty-four hours and when turned on CLEANING Cleaning of AED units will take place once every month or as needed Use isopropyl alcohol or a peroxide solution to clean the AED units IMPORTANT!
