and Whereas, Dr Darby, a Mount Pleasant native, is the beloved husband of Joyce Carolyn Long The couple are the proud and loving parents of five children and currently boast sixteen grandchildren; and Whereas, in 1954 Dr Darby completed his undergraduate education at The Citadel, where he was a member of the football team He attained his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina After completing his internship and a residency in pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, Dr Darby returned to complete his third and final year of pediatric residency at the Medical University of South Carolina; and Whereas, he served the Mount Pleasant community in private practice from 1962 to 1969 In 1970 he joined the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina and was appointed Chairmen of the Department of Pediatrics in 1982; and [663] 1 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 Whereas, recognizing that South Carolina’s children deserved much better healthcare, Dr Darby began a campaign, working in conjunction with South Carolina legislators and Medical University officials, to build a children’s hospital After fifteen years of planning and perseverance his dream was realized in 1988; and Whereas, Dr Darby then shifted his attention to diligently recruiting and attracting outstanding physicians, scientists, and other healthcare professionals, increasing the number of faculty from twelve to eighty during his tenure This diligence paid off and directly led to a ranking among the top ten children’s hospitals in the country in 2001; and Whereas, his commitment is further evidenced by numerous prestigious service awards including: The Order of the Palmetto, the Mitchell Rubin Award, the William Weston Distinguished Service Award, the Ronald McDonald House Spirit of Love Award, the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Rotary Foundation, the United Way Success by Six Catalyst Award, and the Haven Award from the Coastal Community Foundation; and Whereas, after his retirement in 2001 as Chairman of the MUSC Department of Pediatrics as Pediatrician-in-Chief of MUSC’s Children’s Hospital, he has continued to serve in his capacity as Executive Director of MUSC’s Center for Child Advocacy and Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics; and Whereas, in December 2004, the MUSC board of Trustees voted to honor Dr Darby by naming MUSC’s new children’s research institute the Charles P Darby Children’s Research Institute, the largest and most comprehensive pediatric research facility in the Carolinas; and Whereas, Dr Darby’s accomplishments will continue to pay dividends for the children of South Carolina for generations to come and the members of the General Assembly would like to publicly thank Dr Darby Now, therefore, Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring: [663] 2 10 11 12 13 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor Dr Charles P Darby, Jr., for his lifetime of dedication and service to improving children’s healthcare in South Carolina, recognize his leadership in creating the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital, and congratulate him on the new Charles P Darby Research Institute at MUSC’s Children’s Hospital that bears his name, and wish him continued success in all his future endeavors Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr Charles P Darby, Jr XX [663] ... members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor Dr Charles P Darby, Jr., for his lifetime of dedication and service to improving children’s healthcare in South Carolina, ... facility in the Carolinas;
