1 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 South Carolina General Assembly 115th Session, 2003-2004 S 362 STATUS INFORMATION Concurrent Resolution Sponsors: Senator Alexander Document Path: l:\council\bills\bbm\9456sl03.doc Introduced in the Senate on February 13, 2003 Introduced in the House on February 18, 2003 Adopted by the General Assembly on February 18, 2003 Summary: Charles "Lefty" Driesell HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS Date Body Action Description with journal page number 2/13/2003 Senate Introduced, adopted, sent to House SJ-3 2/18/2003 House Introduced, adopted, returned with concurrence HJ-8 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 28 2/13/2003 29 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE CHARLES “LEFTY” DRIESELL OF VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA UPON HIS RECENT RETIREMENT, AND TO WISH HIM AND HIS FAMILY MUCH FUTURE HAPPINESS Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are proud to honor Charles “Lefty” Driesell on a remarkable coaching career that spanned forty years and four institutions; and Whereas, Coach Driesell was born on December 25, 1931, in Norfolk, Virginia He graduated from Duke University where he played as a forward for the Blue Devil basketball team, and he received a Master’s Degree in secondary education from William and Mary University in 1961; and Whereas, Coach Driesell began his coaching career in 1960 at Davidson College where he was a four-time recipient of the Southern Conference Coach of the Year Award After leaving Davidson in 1969, Coach Driesell became the head coach of the University of Maryland; and Whereas, during his seventeen years at Maryland, Coach Driesell was a two-time recipient of the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year Award and received the NCAA Award of Valor in 1973; and Whereas, in 1988, Coach Driesell became the head coach at James Madison University where he was twice honored as Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year He spent eight years at James Madison before accepting the head coaching position at Georgia State University in 1996 Coach Driesell retired from Georgia State in January 2003, after having coached for forty-one [362] 1 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 seasons with a record of seven hundred eighty-six wins against three hundred ninety-four losses; and Whereas, Coach Driesell is the only college basketball coach to win one hundred games with four teams and to take four teams to the NCAA tournament He made thirteen trips to the NCAA Tournament and eight appearances in the NIT Tournament, accumulating the fifth-most wins in Division I history; and Whereas, Coach Driesell and his wife, Joyce, have four children: Patricia, Pamela, Chuck, and Carolyn He currently lives near Virginia Beach with his wife, and spends time playing with his grandchildren and watching basketball; and Whereas, the General Assembly is pleased to recognize Charles “Lefty” Driesell upon his outstanding coaching career and his dedication to college athletics Now, therefore, Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring: That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize Charles “Lefty” Driesell of Virginia Beach, Virginia, upon his recent retirement, and wish him and his family much future happiness Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Charles “Lefty” Driesell of Virginia Beach, Virginia XX [362] ...
