Additional Note University of California – Irvine – Ph.D in Chemistry I PROGRAM DESCRIPTION During the course of a Ph.D., you enroll in one of the graduate program tracks listed at the bottom of this page Each has its own course requirements, but general features of all of the tracks are:  Courses: You take at least regular courses  Enrolled units: To retain full time status, you enroll in 12 units (3 courses) per quarter After you complete your coursework, these are usually research units  Grades: To remain in good academic standing, you maintain a B average  Teaching: You are required to quarters of teaching  Advisor: You choose an advisor during the 2nd quarter of the first year (or earlier)  Exams: In the analytic, atmospheric, physical, and theoretical tracks, you pass cumulative exams at end of the first year; and Major/Degree: Chemistry-Ph.D Indicate Specific Areas of Interest in the box provided Application Fee Your application cannot be reviewed until UCI has received your non-refundable application fee ($105 for U.S Citizens and lawful U.S Permanent Residents, and $125 for all other applicants beginning for Fall '17 admission) Letters of Recommendation - three letters are required Additional Note  These may be submitted electronically by your recommenders via the online application system; or paper versions are also accepted  You are required to have three letters of recommendation submitted on your behalf The letters should be submitted by instructors in a discipline related to your proposed field of study who are in a position to analyze your abilities and academic promise Letters may be submitted online or on paper via regular mail; online submissions are strongly preferred  Online Submission  For the applicant: Letters of recommendation may be submitted online by your recommenders at any time after you start your online application It is strongly recommended that you waive or decline to waive your rights of access to your letters of recommendation (using the online application system) BEFORE you start inviting recommenders to submit their information for you Once you have started your application, you can either use the "LOR & Waiver of Access" section of the online application system or you can use the UCI Application Progress Review System to specify your recommenders and send automated invitation emails to them The automated invitation emails include all the information needed by your recommenders to submit your recommendation online After you have completed and submitted your application, you may continue to manage your list of recommenders and monitor the status of their submissions using the UCI Application Progress Review System Please note that this feature does not reflect the status of letters of recommendation that are submitted on paper  For the recommender: Please ask your student to use the UCI Application Progress Review System to send you an automated invitation email for submitting an online recommendation That email will include a secure web link for you to access the online Letter of Recommendation system and submit your recommendation for their application Please note that the online Letter of Recommendation system DOES support the upload of letter files only in PDF format, but you can also copy/paste the text of your letter for the online submission if you don't have a PDF file  Paper Submission  For the applicant: Please complete the two sections of the Paper Letter of Recommendation/Waiver of Access Form below with the heading "Applicant" and provide the mailing address of the program to which you are applying, at the end of the form Next, print out the entire form, and mail it to your recommender Your recommender should complete the form and mail it Additional Note to the address that you have indicated on the form  For the recommender: Your student should complete the "Applicant" sections of the form below and the mailing address and send the form to you Please complete the "Recommender" sections of the form and mail the form to the address provided by your student at the end of the form Official GRE scores: The institution code for UCI is 4859 The UCI Chemistry Department code is 0301 Official TOEFL or IELTS  If required; scores will be sent directly to UC Irvine by the testing agency Please choose Institution Code 4859  How can I have my IELTS test scores sent to UC Irvine? You not need to include this information as ETS will send your scores electronically to UCI Regardless of what department code you enter, your scores will be reported to UCI Can I apply before taking the GRE test? Yes, you can On the application you will enter the date you are registered to take the test I sent my recommender an invitation to submit a letter, but s/he did not receive it What should I do? It is possible that your recommender has restrictive filtering of their e-mail They will have to allow the Webmaster e-mail address or look in their junk/spam email folder, if they have one, to see if the e-mail is there You may wish to go to Application Progress Review to request that the e-mail be sent to your recommender again I would like to make a change to my online application, but I have already submitted it What should I do? After submission, your application cannot be changed by you or the Graduate Division staff You should send an e-mail to your program requesting any changes you would like to make May I apply before taking an English language proficiency test like the TOEFL? Yes, you may On the application you should enter the registration date for the test http://www.grad.uci.edu/admissions/applying-to-uci/faq.html V SOP/ESSAY/WRITING SAMPLE Statement of Purpose Describe your research interests, including research you have completed and or any papers you have published Include your career objectives and goals for graduate study http://www.chem.uci.edu/graduate/apply Applicants for our graduate programs are selected using a holistic evaluation system This essay will assist both the admissions committee and fellowship review committees to evaluate your preparation for the proposed field of study In your statement of purpose, please describe your aptitude and motivation for graduate study in your area of specialization Make sure to address the following topics:  Preparation  Academic plans and research interests Additional Note  Relevant experience  Future career goals  Why UC Irvine would be a good intellectual fit for you Formatting instructions:  1200 words maximum  Brief introduction and conclusion  Structured paragraph(s) for each topic This "Statement of Purpose" is required for all applicants and is different from the "Personal History Statement" that is also required for all applicants who are US Citizens or legal US Permanent Residents The "Statement of Purpose" is expected to focus on your academic/research experiences and interests while the "Personal History Statement" should focus on your personal background In addition to the "Statement of Purpose" and "Personal History Statement", some academic programs require applicants to provide a writing sample Applicants will be notified about any such requirements by their program and will submit any additional items separately and directly to the program Check with your department about any such additional requirements (Guidelines from the Online Application) What is the difference between “The Statement of Purpose” and “Personal History”? Yes Permanent Residents are not automatically waived from taking the TOEFL If you completed all the requirements for your high school diploma, bachelor’s degree, or an advanced degree in the US or another country where English is the primary and/or dominant language, however, and English was the language of instruction, the TOEFL requirement may be waived for admission purposes If any transferred credits from a school in a country where English is not the primary or Additional Note dominant language are indicated on your transcript, you will be required to take one of the English proficiency tests If you have questions, please send us an e-mail I am going to complete my Bachelor’s (or Master’s) degree in the US Do I need to take the TOEFL? When and how will I receive my I-20 form? After you complete and pay for your application, the Graduate Division will process your application, which can take up to one week After your application has been processed, you may check to see if your scores have been received by using Application Progress Review (APR) How can I check on the status of my application? The Application Progress Review (APR) system is the best way to check on test scores and Letters of Recommendation submitted online There are two ways to check Additional Note on receipt of paper Letters of Recommendation and transcripts, depending on the program If you are applying to a program in the School of Information and Computer Science, Engineering, Social Sciences or the Master’s in Public Health, you should use GATS (Graduate Application Tracking System) Applicants to all other programs should e-mail program staff directly Please allow at least 30 days after you submit your application before contacting the university and only so if absolutely necessary This will allow staff to focus on processing application decisions during the busy admissions season You will receive a letter or e-mail directly from your program after a decision is made When can I expect to hear a decision on my application?
