School, an applicant must have a bachelor's degree from a college or university of recognized standing Most applicants have a Bachelor of Science in some branch of engineering Those with a degree in natural sciences or mathematics can be admitted but will need to make up course deficiencies in undergraduate preparation as shown in the section on Background Preparation Exceptional applicants seeking the Ph.D degree can proceed directly to the Ph.D program without completing a master's degree All applications are considered individually and admission decisions are made collectively Application Note by all EWRE faculty Decisions are based on all applicable items of the six listed below GPA A minimum 3.0 GPA out of 4.0 is expected for M.S applicants, and 3.5 for Ph.D applicants This GPA is based on upper-division undergraduate courses and all graduate work GRE Applicants must take the aptitude test of the Graduate Record Examination Successful applicants typically have a quantitative score of at least 700, an analytical writing score of at least 4.0, and (for those whose native language is English) a verbal score above 500 The ETS code for UT Austin is 6882 TOEFL The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all students whose native language is not English Successful applicants typically have scores of at least 240 on the computer-based test Transcripts After satisfying the application fee, provide an official transcript from every senior college you have attended Even if courses taken at one institution are recorded on another college's transcript, transcripts must be submitted from the institution at which the courses were taken Failure to list all colleges on the application and provide those transcripts will be considered an intentional omission and may lead to the cancellation of your application for admission or withdrawal of your offer of admission Official transcripts bear the facsimile signature of the registrar and the seal of the issuing institution Transcripts from U.S colleges or universities must have been Application Note produced within the last calendar year, and transcripts written in a language other than English must be accompanied by a translation Each transcript (mark sheet) should contain a complete record of studies at the institution from which it is issued (i.e., the subjects taken and grades [marks] earned in each subject) If your college or university uses the SPEEDE service you can have your transcript(s) sent electronically Check with the registrar of your institution to find
