By one estimate, 70% of all medical decisions are based on laboratory results, although laboratory costs account for only 2.3% of total health care dollars The purpose of the laboratory is to provide physicians and other health care professionals with information to detect disease or predisposition to disease; confirm or reject a diagnosis; establish prognosis; guide patient management; and monitor efficacy of therapy The laboratory also plays a leading role in education and research, information technology design and implementation, and quality improvement 1 PRONUNCIATION EXERCISES The clinical laboratory exposes staff, and potentially the public, to a variety of hazards, including infectious patients, infectious patient specimens, and potentially hazardous chemicals and equipment Exposure occurs from ingestion, inoculation, tactile contamination, or inhalation of infectious material from patients or their body fluids/tissues, supplies or materials they have been in contact with or contaminated needles, or by aerosol dispersion The potential also exists for inadvertent exposure to the public through direct contact with aerosolized infectious materials, improperly processed blood products, and inappropriately disposed of waste products 1 PRONUNCIATION EXERCISES This is a complex operation that must smoothly integrate all three phases of the testing process: preanalysis, analysis, and postanalysis Preanalysis refers to all the activities that take place before testing, such as test ordering and sample collection The analysis stage consists of the laboratory activities that actually produce a result, such as running a sample on an automated analyzer Postanalysis comprises patient reporting and result interpretation A laboratorybased diagnostic algorithm can assist with medical decision making and reduce test utilization With this approach, a physician requests the laboratory to perform a diagnostic workup (e.g., liver function evaluation) instead of ordering specific tests 2 LISTENING EXERCISES VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8ixnaY5XuQ&t=2638s Listen to the audio twice and try to fill in the blanks 2 LISTENING EXERCISES AUDIO AT 36:00 [1/4] Now I’m going to take some fluid (1) _ to find out what’s giving you (2) A nurse will help me It’s wont take very long Now I want you to move (3) That’s it Right Lie on your left side Right Now can you (4) up as far as they will go?
