28.1.08 Table 983.13 AOAC Official Method 983.13 Alcohol in Wines Gas Chromatographic Method First Action 1983 Final Action 1988 A Apparatus and Reagents (a) Gas chromatograph.—With flame ionization detector, integrator, heated on-column injector, and ft (1.8 m) × mm id glass column packed with 0.2% Carbowax 1500 on 80–100 mesh Carbopack C (Supelco, Inc.; No 1-1827) Adjust air and H2 for flame detector to optimum for carrier gas flow of column used Adjust electrometer sensitivity to provide ≥50 000 counts of integrator counts for internal standard peak See Table 983.13 for gas chromatograph specifications (b) Diluter.—Capable of ±0.1% precision (c) In ter nal stan dard so lu tion.—0.2% (v/v) 2-propanol in H O (d) Alcohol standard solution.—Prepare alcohol–H2O solution containing approximate % alcohol expected in test portion Determine exact % alcohol by pycnometer, 942.06B(a) (see 26.1.07); refractometer, 950.04 (see 26.1.10); hydrometer, 957.03A (see 26.1.08); or other appropriate AOAC method, or use Standard Reference Material 1590, Stabilized Wine (NIST) Gas chromatograph specifications Carrier gas N2 Flow rate, mL/min 15 Oven temperature 105°C Injector temperature 175°C Detector temperature 175°C B Determination Dilute alcohol standard solution 1:100 with internal standard solution Inject at least three 1.0 µL aliquots and determine average response ratio of area of alcohol peak to area of 2-propanol peak (RR′) Dilute test portion 1:100 with internal standard solution, inject 1.0 µL, and determine response ratio (RR) Alcohol, % = RR × % alcohol in standard RR ′ Reference: JAOAC 66, 1152(1983) CAS-64-17-5 (alcohol)  2005 AOAC INTERNATIONAL
