This programme has been in existence since 1953. It prides itself on having produced high-
quality students who have contributed to the world of communication design both nationally and
internationally.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
National Senior Certicate with an endorsement of a bachelor’s degree or a diploma, or an
equivalent qualication, with an achievement level of at least 4 for English (home language or rst
additional language).
SELECTION CRITERIA
To be considered for this qualication, applicants must have an Admission Points Score (APS) of at
least 19.
SUBJECTS MINIMUM PERFORMANCE LEVEL/SCORE
English (rst or second language) 4
Any ve other subjects (excluding Life Orientation) with a nal score of 15
TOTAL 19
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES
Applicants with a score of 19+ will be invited to submit a portfolio. The top 100 performers will
be invited for an informal discussion with the lecturers and a demonstration. The portfolio will
contribute 60%, and the informal discussion and demonstration will contribute 40% towards the nal
admission score.
ADVICE TO PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
Prospective students should please note that selection for programmes presented at theFacultyof
the Arts will be possible only after the successful completion ofthe relevant evaluation process.
Please apply well in advance – from as early as June, but no later than 15 August.
MINIMUM DURATION
Three years of day classes.

The department has close contact with industry to ensure that students keep up with the fast
moving trends in the expanding job market, namely advertising, design, publishing, packaging and
printing. After graduation, our designers are much sought-after and have found employment as far
aeld as Europe, America and Australasia, where they have competed very successfully within their
discipline.
CAREER PROFILE
The prospective student should have an interest in and understanding of thedesign industry. He or
she should be able to produce creative work under pressure, work long hours and keep to a tight
schedule and deadlines.

SUBJECT INFORMATION
COMMUNICATION DESIGN I
Basic methods of conceptualisation, visualisation and presentation of introductory assignments in
graphic design and advertising with the emphasis on visual, problem-solving content.
DESIGN TECHNIQUES I
An introduction to the basic techniques, processes and materials that are necessary to produce
communication concepts.
GRAPHIC DESIGN DRAWING I
Basic creative methods and a study of a wide range of drawn images in various mediums, using
observation and imagination, to build a visual vocabulary as source material for communication
design.

HISTORY OF ART AND DESIGN I
Students will be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of comprehension of broad art-historical
principles. They will gain an understanding of the development of art concepts, the critical
explication and analysis of works of art, and the relationship between the broad issues of art theory
and studio practice.
PROFESSIONAL GRAPHICDESIGN PRACTICE I
Introduction to verbal, written, electronic and other communication methods. Business concepts.
