Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect children (and adults) against several harmful diseases Vaccines ‘turn on’ the body’s natural defences to help them fight these diseases which can cause serious illness and even death What vaccines are given? The National Health and Medical Research Council recommends a number of vaccines, these are listed on pages 69-70 Talk with your immunisation provider to work out your own child’s needs Each time your child is immunised, take this book along so the vaccines given can be recorded You may need to provide proof of your child’s immunisation history to enter childcare, kindergarten or school When should I immunise my child? Your child needs immunisations at birth then at 2, ,6, 12 and 18 months and again at years of age Immunisations due at months of age may be given to babies from weeks of age to offer earlier protection from disease Immunisations due at years of age may be given to children from years months of age Aboriginal children may be at increased risk of certain diseases such as Hepatitis A and therefore need additional immunisations at 18 months and years of age If these immunisations are not given at the right time your child may be unprotected against harmful diseases Additional immunisations may be required for babies born prematurely and children with some long-term illnesses as they are at increased risk of complications from diseases Where can I get my child immunised and will it be free? Immunisation is available from your local doctor, many local councils and community health services Please contact them directly for clinic times and venues Vaccines listed on the National Immunisation Program schedule (see pages 69-70) are free for all children who live in Australia What happens if my child misses an immunisation? It is strongly recommended that you try very hard to have your child immunised at the ages shown in the schedule (see pages 69-70) If you miss a date, your child may still be able to receive immunisations You should contact your immunisation provider straight away to discuss this My health record - 2011 edition page 67 Immunisation Will there be any side effects? Vaccines are like any other medicine and can have side effects Most reactions are only mild, short lasting, and not require special treatment Your immunisation provider will explain what reactions there might be after an immunisation and what to if you are worried Very rarely a child may have a severe allergic reaction Your immunisation provider is trained to recognise and manage any immediate severe reactions Information about the possible side effects of immunisation can be confusing If you would like further information, call the Immunisation Section, SA Health, on 08 8226 7177 or the 24 hour Parent Helpline on 1300 364 100 You can also read the Immunisation Myths and Realities, 4th Edition booklet at www.immunise.health.gov.au The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) www.ncirs.usyd.edu.au also has information Do I need to provide any other information before my child can be immunised? Before your child is immunised the doctor or nurse will ask you some questions to make sure your child is well enough to receive the immunisation You will be able to discuss any concerns you may have about the vaccines or diseases before your child is immunised Before any immunisation takes place your doctor or nurse will ask you: > Did you understand the information provided to you about immunisation? > Do you need more information to decide whether to go ahead with immunisation? > Do you agree for your child to be immunised? Further information For more information or if you have any questions regarding your child’s immunisation, please call the Immunisation Section, SA Health on 08 8226 7177 or the 24 hour Parent Helpline on 1300 364 100 You can also visit www.immunise.health.gov.au and/or www.ncirs.edu.au For travel immunisation advice visit www.smartraveller.gov.au page 68 My health record - 2011 edition Immunisation National Immunisation Program South Australian childhood immunisation schedule * Please be aware that the National Immunisation Program is subject to change Your immunisation provider will have the most current information Age Dose no Disease Vaccine Birth Birth Hepatitis B HB Vax II 1st Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Haemophilus Influenzae type B, Hepatitis B, Polio } Infanrix hexa 1st Pneumococcal Prevenar 1st Rotavirus RotaTeq 2nd Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Haemophilus Influenzae type B, Hepatitis B, Polio } Infanrix hexa 2nd Pneumococcal Prevenar 2nd Rotavirus RotaTeq 3rd Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Haemophilus Influenzae type B, Hepatitis B, Polio } Infanrix hexa 3rd Pneumococcal Prevenar 3rd Rotavirus RotaTeq 1st Measles, Mumps, Rubella } Priorix 1st Meningococcal C Neis Vac C or Meningitec 4th Haemophilus Influenzae type B Hiberix months months months 12 months Continued on next page My health record - 2011 edition page 69 Immunisation National Immunisation Program South Australian childhood immunisation schedule (continued) 18 months 1st Chickenpox (Varicella) Varivax 18 months 1st Chickenpox (Varicella) Varivax Aboriginal children only 1st Hepatitis A Vaqta years 1st Pneumococcal Pneumovax 23 Aboriginal children only 2nd Hepatitis A Vaqta Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Polio } Infanrix-IPV Measles, Mumps, Rubella } Priorix years th 2nd Adolescent Immunisation Schedule Program No of doses Disease Vaccine School Based Immunisation Program Year Hepatitis B HB Vax II adult Chickenpox (Varicella) Varivax (Girls only) Human Papillomavirus Gardasil Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis Boostrix School Based Immunisation Program Year page 70 My health record - 2011 edition My health record - 2011 edition months LL/RL 2nd 2nd 2nd Rotavirus 1st Rotavirus (oral) Pneumococcal (7vPCV) LL/RL Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Haemophilus Influenzae type B, Hepatitis B, Polio LL/RL (oral) Pneumococcal (7vPCV) LL/RL Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Haemophilus Influenzae type B, Hepatitis B, Polio LL/RL Hepatitis B Immunisation 1st 1st Birth Birth months Dose no Age Batch number Date given Next due Provider signature/stamp Parent/Guardian Signature * * I have read and understood the information given to me about immunisation including the effects of disease and the side effects of immunisation I have been given the opportunity to discuss the risks and benefits with my doctor/nurse I request the named child to be immunised with the vaccines recommended on the National Immunisation Program schedule and I understand that consent can be withdrawn at anytime (Parent/guardian to sign at each encounter.)
