This is the second of a series of three books in American English whose purpose is to help students build up their English vocabulary Particular attention has been paid to college entrance requirements The first book uses a vocabulary of 1500 words, the second takes the student from there up toa vocabulary of approximately 3000 words, and the third adds another 15 00, to bring the total up to 4500 *

Each book contains six blocks of work, which can be used at regular intervals throughout the school year In Word Power 3000 each block consists of the ' following varieties of exercise: Pictures, Synonyms, Opposites, Derivatives,

Words in Sentences, and, to round off, Prepositions and Adverbial Particles It will be noticed that ‘‘content”’ words are generally practiced only once, while prepositions and adverbial particles are often practiced several times The aim here is to reinforce understanding of items whose meanings and uses are both complex and fundamental to the study of English ˆ There is always one correct answer except in some cases in Synonyms and Opposites Here, alternative answers are sometimes available Such cases help’ to alert students to subtle shades of similarity and difference The separately available Answer Keys give example sentences for contextualization

The word list at the end of the book contains all the words practiced in the exercises In addition to the new items, this list includes all those words presented in Word Power 1500 and reused here (The latter are marked with

(1500).)
