I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Rationale Language is one of the medium of expressing our ideas, feelings and emotions And if we think about language in present world then English is one of the most used languages in the world and it is the official language in a large number of countries In the National curriculum of Vietnam, English is one of the core subjects, which are compulsory in the high school final examination Therefore, students have to study all the English skills for their tests However, there still exist many difficulties facing teachers in teaching English to students, especially those from ethnic minorities Enlish language teaching in moutainous and remote areas is somehow a challenging work Teachers and students there have to face various problems regarding the process of English language teaching Quan Son, which is one of the mountainous districts of Thanh Hoa province, has poor living standard and poor standard of education Though English is taught as a compulsory subject, the students not find the prime importance of English and their interest naturally slackens Most of them often ignore English lessons; therefore they gain little knowledge of English, especially its basic grammar They are encouraged to take part in tutoring classes to have enough knowledge in order to pass the final examinaton when they finish high school One of the most difficult grammar parts that weak and poor students have to face is conditional stentence For these above reasons, I would like to choose the topic “GUIDING THE WEAK AND POOR STUDENTS OF GRADE 10 AT QUAN SON SECONDARY AND HIGH SCHOOL TO MASTER THE USE OF CONDITIONAL SENTENCES” in the hope of supplying upper-secondary students, especially the students of grade 10 at Quan Son lower & uppersecondary school with enough knowledge of conditional sentences It is hoped that both students and other teachers will find some useful reference for their learning and teaching 1.2 Aims of the study The study is aimed to help the students: - Help students understand how to write conditional sentences 1, 2, - Students can practice by doing exercises correctly - Make students love learning English more 1.3 Subjects of the study The study is carried out with 60 students of grade 10 who have been learning English for years( years at lower secondary school with English 6,7, 8, 9).These students study at Quan Son Secondary and High School in Quan Son, Thanh Hoa They are mainly from ethnic minority Among 60 students who take part in the study, most of them are not good at English, even they can not write more than English sentences 1.4 Methods of the study In order to achieve the above aim, the teacher supplies or teaches the necessary knowledge about process approach and an overview of conditional sentences to the students After that, students will have time to practise them and get feedback as well as correction from their friends and teachers In this study, theory study, observation, data collection and analysis, discussion as well as evaluation are mainly used to achieve the aims of the study II CONTENT 2.1 Literature review 2.2 The reality of maintaining the students’ interest in grade 10 at Quan Son Secondary and High School Although students who are in grade 10 have been learning English for years, they still feel that English is a very difficult subject, especially English grammar Most of them not receive sufficient exposure at home They have many difficulties in recognizing English teses; therefore they are unable to acquire another knowledge related to tenses and to use them in concrete situations Therefore, guiding the students how to master basic English grammar is really necessary and important for them in their English learning and in their tests as well 2.3 The review of the theory of conditional sentences Conditional tenses are used to speculate about what could happen, what might have happened, and what we wish would happen In English, most sentences using the conditional contain the word if Many conditional forms in English are used in sentences that include verbs in one of the past tenses This usage is referred to as "the unreal past" because we use a past tense but we are not actually referring to something that happened in the past There are five main ways of constructing conditional sentences in English In all cases, these sentences are made up of an if clause and a main clause In many negative conditional sentences, there is an equivalent sentence construction using "unless" instead of "if" Conditional sentence type Usage Zero General truths If clause verb Main clause verb tense tense Simple present Simple present Conditional sentence type Usage If clause verb Main clause verb tense tense Type A possible condition and Simple present its probable result Simple future Type A hypothetical condition and its probable result Simple past Present conditional or Present continuous conditional Type An unreal past condition and its probable result in the past Past perfect Perfect conditional Mixed type An unreal past condition and its probable result in the present Past perfect Present contditional The zero conditional The zero conditional is used for when the time being referred to is now or always and the situation is real and possible The zero conditional is often used to refer to general truths The tense in both parts of the sentence is the simple present In zero conditional sentences, the word "if" can usually be replaced by the word "when" without changing the meaning If clause Main clause If + simple present simple present If clause Main clause If this thing happens that thing happens If you heat ice it melts If it rains the grass gets wet Type conditional The type conditional is used to refer to the present or future where the situation is real The type conditional refers to a possible condition and its probable result In these sentences the if clause is in the simple present, and the main clause is in the simple future If clause Main clause If + simple present simple future If this thing happens that thing will happen If you don't hurry you will miss the train If it rains today you will get wet Type conditional The type conditional is used to refer to a time that is now or any time, and a situation that is unreal These sentences are not based on fact The type conditional is used to refer to a hypothetical condition and its probable result In type conditional sentences, the if clause uses the simple past, and the main clause uses the present conditional If clause Main clause If + simple past present conditional or present continuous conditional If this thing happened that thing would happen (but I'm not sure this thing will happen) OR that thing would be happening If you went to bed earlier you would not be so tired If it rained you would get wet If I spoke Italian I would be working in Italy Type conditional The type conditional is used to refer to a time that is in the past, and a situation that is contrary to reality The facts they are based on are the opposite of what is expressed The type conditional is used to refer to an unreal past condition and its probable past result In type conditional sentences, the if clause uses the past perfect, and the main clause uses the perfect conditional If clause Main clause If + past perfect perfect conditional or perfect continuous If clause Main clause conditional If this thing had happened that thing would have happened (but neither of those things really happened) OR that thing would have been happening If you had studied harder you would have passed the exam If it had rained you would have gotten wet If I had accepted that promotion I would have been working in Milan Mixed type conditional The mixed type conditional is used to refer to a time that is in the past, and a situation that is ongoing into the present The facts they are based on are the opposite of what is expressed The mixed type conditional is used to refer to an unreal past condition and its probable result in the present In mixed type conditional sentences, the if clause uses the past perfect, and the main clause uses the present conditional If clause Main clause If + past perfect or simple past present conditional or perfect conditional If this thing had happened that thing would happen (but this thing didn't happen so that thing isn't happening) If clause Main clause If I had worked harder at school I would have a better job now If we had looked at the map we wouldn't be lost If you weren't afraid of spiders you would have picked it up and put it outside REVISION EXERCISES Exercise 1: Part 1: Put these verbs into correct forms using conditional sentence type 1 If I (study), I (pass) the exams If the sun Firstly, the teacher gave examples and analysted stuents understand - Secondly, the teacher draw the formula from the examples - Next, the teacher began to provide the theory of conditional sentences and give structures in detail for the students CONDITIONAL SENTENCE Type 1: Real conditional sentences Situation Future possible Habitual If Clause If + S + V(simple present) Ex: If I have the money, If + S + V (simple present) Ex: If Ann has enough time, Main Clause S+ will/can/may/must + V I will be a new car S + V(simple present) she usually walks to school 15 Command If + S + V (simple present) Ex : If you hear from Bill, Command form please call me Type 2: Present unreal conditional sentences If Clause Main Clause If + S + Vsimple past (be S + would/could/ might/ had were) to + V Ex: I don’t have free time, so we can’t go to the beach with you  If I had time, I would go to the beach with you Type 3: Past unreal conditional sentences If Clause If + S + V(past perfect) Main Clause S + would/could/might + have + P.P (V3/ed) Ex: I didn’t know that you were there, so I didn’t write you a letter  If I had known that you I would have written you a letter were there, After that, the teacher gave students another examples to help them understand more + Stage : After applying the new teaching method, the teacher did survey again and received better results as follows: Students’ results based on the second survey: Grade Number Distinction Credit Pass 10A No % No % No % 60 1,6 10,1 44 73,3 Weakness No % 15 2.4.2.Results As can be seen from the table, the result had changed dramatically From the result of the study, it can be clearly seen that the number of students, who were taught with the new method, have got better marks in their tests III CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION 3.1 Conclusion 16 As I have mentioned above, ethnic minority students of grade 10 at Quan Son secondary and high school are not good at English This makes students both tired and bored and not concern about this subject, so the teacher should combine all activities to create excitement for the students and help the students have motivation of learning English This is my own experience in teaching a small part of English grammar for the weak and poor students of grade 10 this school year I believe that the students will have more confidence in their study I hope this method can be applied in our school widely Finally, I hope to receive ideas from other teachers so as to have a better study 3.2 Suggestion I myself think that the result of learning English in general and developing language skills of high school students will be better if we are able to make some changes as follow: Firstly, I suggest that more training classes for English teachers should be held so that the teachers can have more knowledge related to the subject they are teaching and more opportunities to meet and share their experience in their teaching Secondly, it is necessary for high schools to choose suitable English textbooks when they start the next school year with general education program 2018 Thirdly, high schools need to be equipped with advanced technology and other conditions to have an effect on teaching and studying a language In summary, the ability of teachers in teaching English, the changes in the content of the textbook and the use of advanced technology would make the quality of teaching and learning English at high schools better in the future XÁC NHẬN CỦA HIỆU TRƯỞNG Thanh Hóa, ngày 15 tháng 05 năm2022 Tơi xin cam đoan SKKN viết, không chép nội dung người khác Tạ Quốc Vit Phm Xuõn Chin 17 References [1] Hoàng Văn Vân( Chủ biên)( 2011) Tiếng Anh 10, Nhà xuất giáo dơc ViƯt Nam [2] Jeremy Harmer( 2008), How to teach English, Longman [3] Brow, H Doughlas( 2001), Teaching by principles, New York Pearson Education 18 [4] Randolph Quirk (2003), A University Grammar of English, Nhà xuất Hải Phòng [5] Raymond Murphy (2003), Essential Grammar In Use, Nhà xuất Giao thơng vận tải [6] Tìm hiểu khai thác kênh mạng Internet [7] Một số tài liệu tham khảo khác DANH MỤC CÁC ĐỀ TÀI SÁNG KIẾN KINH NGHIỆM ĐÃ ĐƯỢC HỘI ĐỒNG ĐÁNH GIÁ XẾP LOẠI CẤP PHÒNG GD&ĐT, CẤP SỞ GD&ĐT VÀ CÁC CẤP CAO HƠN XẾP LOẠI TỪ C TRỞ LÊN Họ tên tác giả: Phạm Xuân Chiến Chức vụ đơn vị công tác: Giáo viên trường THCS&THPT Quan Sơn TT Tên đề tài SKKN Cấp đánh Kết Năm học giá xếp loại đánh giá đánh giá xếp 19 (Phòng, Sở, Tỉnh ) Câu bị động dạng Hội đồng tập trắc nghiệm khoa học Phương pháp dạy câu trực ngành Hội đồng tiếp gián tiếp phù hợp với khoa học học sinh trường THPT Quan ngành Sơn Teaching comparaives and Hội đồng superlatives to the students of khoa học class 10A1 at Quan Son ngành xếp loại (A, B, loại C) C 2011 -
