AMAZON? 1.1 General information Name of company: AMAZON Founder: Jeffrey Preston Bezos Year founded: 1994 Headquarters: Seattle, Washington, United States Type: Public Number of employees (2020): 1,298,000 Ticker symbol: AMZN Website: www.amazon.com Annual Revenue (Dec 2020): $386 billion TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com Profit | Net income (Dec 2020): $21 billion 1.2 History of company Figure 1.1 The change in Amazon's logo from its inception to present Amazon is currently renowned as the "World's Largest Online Retailer," and the company has grown tremendously over many years to earn that distinction Jeff Bezos is the mastermind behind this massive store He began to brainstorm these ideas in the early 1990s when Bezos was researching the internet for D.E Shaw & Co (1) , a worldwide investment and technology development business, he realized that books would be an ideal commodity to sell on the internet since book wholesalers already kept digitized listings of their books online However, Bezos' suggestion was rejected by Shaw The corporation was unable to see the future that Bezos could create The future that eventually results in the establishment of Amazon - a perfectly-currently successful company Nonetheless, Bezos still chasing his goal and established the company in Seattle in 1994 under the name Cadabra, Inc., but the name was changed because it was noticed that people were occasionally mistaken for Cadaver in pronunciation Until July 1995, he named the company Amazon after the Amazon River in South America, hoping that the company's scale would ultimately be big as the Amazon river's vastness, and also because TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com it begins with the letter A, which will appear at the top of the alphabetical list After months of strategic thought and preparation, Bezos launched the company website Since its inception, Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, has clarified that its primary goal is to increase market share in and dominate the areas in which it operates, ignoring short-term profitability In just over a month, the company shipped books to every state in the United States as well as 45 other nations Its early success can be credited to Bezos' hands-on approach He was so keen for the company to achieve quick momentum that he directly assisted in its delivery operation, helping to assemble orders and driving packages to the post office After going public in 1997, Amazon established itself as a renowned book store by being the sole book retailer on AOL and Netscape's websites This same year, Bezos hand-delivered the company’s one-millionth order to a customer who ordered a Windows NT manual and a biography about Princess Diana in Japan (2) By 1998, the company had begun to broaden its product Amazon introduced its online music and movie businesses, as well as toys and electronics to its marketplace At the same time, the corporation grew overseas Amazon purchased online retailers in the United Kingdom and Germany and the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), which provided Amazon with the advertising resources needed to sell DVDs and videotapes Until now, not only does it sell books, music, video, toys, etc., but Amazon also provides everything that people require, such as clothing, watches, toys, games, baby products, sporting goods, jewellery, garden things, health and self-care items, cosmetic products, musical instruments, foodstuffs, industrial and scientific supplies, and so on Bezos accelerated the product expansion by purchasing Junglee, a comparative shopping site, and PlanetAll, a company focusing on calendars, contact books, and reminders The years that followed in Amazon's history continue to reflect the company's tremendous development The company raised $1.25 billion from a bond sale in 1999 (3) In the same year, Amazon collaborated with Sotheby's, an international art auction company, and built distribution centres to speed up the shipment and hold inventory By TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com the conclusion of this year, the firm had sent 20 million things to 150 countries worldwide (4) Due to a restructuring plan, Amazon cut 15% of its workforce in 2001 By 2002, Amazon continues to extend its product selection, including apparel from prominent shops such as Nordstrom, The Gap, and Lands End That same year, the firm received ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) certification, identifying Amazon as a domain registrar (5) In 2005, Amazon Prime was introduced This shipping service assured two-day shipment to consumers from any location for $79 at first and is now $119 per year It had created a great significant influence on retail at that point Amazon launched its first food business in 2006, followed by the Amazon Fresh delivery service, which was available to Seattle residents The Kindle, an electronic and portable book reader, branded Amazon, was introduced in 2007 Because of the success of the Kindle, Amazon announced in 2011 that it was selling more electronic books than physical books Aside from that, Amazon created two other websites: Endless.com, which links Amazon users to a portion of their site that sells shoes and accessories, and Askville.com, which allows users to ask questions and receive answers Brilliance Audio was also acquired by Amazon in 2007 Amazon concentrated on the leisure and retail industries in 2008 Amazon Video OnDemand was introduced The corporation purchased The Talk Market, an online shopping startup that assists merchants in creating video commercials, which allow Amazon to grow into the area of apparel as well Amazon purchased Zappos.com, a large online shoe and clothing retailer in 2009 in order to capitalize on the company's mastery of customer care and its uniqueness Amazon continues to learn from professionals in various fields by purchasing companies from a wide range of industries and incorporating their technology into their own tactics So, with this method, Amazon's development appears to be limitless, always improving, expanding, and developing TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com Amazon Studios was started in late 2010 and received more than 10,000 feature screenplay submissions and 1,800 television pilots, of which it has put 17 films and nine television series into active development (6) Content is distributed through theaters and Amazon Prime Video, Amazon's digital video streaming service, whose competitors include Netflix and Hulu (7) Additionally, in 2014, Amazon paid $4.6 million for the ".buy" domain, marking their area as the online buying center Following the relative success of the Amazon Fire HD tablet and Amazon Fire TV, the business also debuted the Fire Phone in 2014 The Fire Phone, on the other hand, was a colossal flop and was discarded barely a year later This mistake in the company's prosperity cost $170 million Amazon released the Amazon Echo in 2015, along with Alexa, a device that performs as both a speaker and an artificial intelligence assistant Alexa can place orders on Amazon.com, and play music, answer questions and interact with customers in their daily lives Moreover, by the end of 2015, Amazon became the world’s most valuable retailer, surpassing Walmart (8) Also, this year Amazon Web Services became the world’s leading provider of Cloud infrastructure services (9) By 2016, the company had hit $136 billion in revenues In 2017, Amazon invested $13.7 billion in acquiring Whole Foods in mortar retail in the digital world Through this intelligence investment, Amazon received a great of consumer data that helped Amazon gain a fuller understanding of the food industry in order to efficiently enter the food market Following the success of Echo device, which had been sold tens of millions and reached more than 100 million paid Prime members globally, Amazon music has been expanded to more than 30 countries Meanwhile, Amazon also launched the Prime Wardrobe, a shopping service that allows you to try clothes on at home before you buy them (10) TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com Figure 1.2 The milestones of Amazon from 1994 to 2017 In June 2018, Amazon acquired a $753 million for PillPack, an online pharmacy that allows consumers to buy drugs in pre-made dosages (11) This highlights that Amazon aims to play a more direct — and commercial — role in the realm of healthcare in the coming years In November 2019, the company changed their branding from "PillPack, an Amazon company" to "PillPack by Amazon Pharmacy" (12) This is also the year in which Amazon heavily put Alexa into everything They revealed that Alexa's deep neural networks will be improved so that it can comprehend people who are whispering, ask better follow-up inquiries, and learn new languages quicker It can also predict athletic events and provide answers to math, physics, and engineering questions (13) In 2019, Alexa continued to be the star of Amazon with many new skills and features were announced Although Amazon Studios, the company's film and television production arm launched in 2010, has suffered from movie flops In 2019, Amazon had received eight Golden Globe nominations for movies and streaming shows Amazon was predicted to be the most significant company in the 2020s after the appearance of Covid 19 in late 2019 Despite the epidemic, Amazon's net profit still TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com In 2001, Amazon extended its electronic products and also created computer and magazine subscription shops and developed strategic agreements with merchants such as Target and Circuit City In November 2002, Amazon launched a new online clothing store with merchandise from prominent brands such as The Gap, Cole Hahn, Osh Kosh, Land's End, Spiegel, Old Navy, etc Amazon's diverse business model has enabled it to improve its market capitalization and profitability and become recognized as the world's largest online retailer The company also focuses on increasing convenience with new features such as 'Instant Order Update,' which alerts clients if they are going to purchase the same item again Amazon described itself as the "World's Biggest Selection," aspires to be the world's "most customer-centric company," functioning via three main basic businesses: Online retail, Marketplace and other, and Third-party sellers Amazon also targeted the institutional sector and consumers in order to create a new source of revenue: renting out its site-building services to other firms When compared to other Internet businesses, Amazon owes much of its financial success to the site-building and hosting services provided to customers such as Borders and Toys R Us Figure 2.1 Basic business model of Amazon 13 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com Strategic alliances are another important component of Amazon's business model to broaden its range of products and services so the company has entered into a number of agreements by allowing selected strategic partners to sell products and services on the Amazon.com website under co-branded sections These alliances have generally involved Amazon making or having the right to make a minority investment in the companies, as well as the entry into commercial agreements ranging from customer advertising activities and links to their transaction In addition, to develop its travel shop, the firm formed strategic relationships with Hotwire, Expedia, and National Leisure Group, further achieving its diversification goals Amazon's marketing strategy is one of the most common components of its business model, with the goal of strengthening and broadening the Amazon, increasing customer traffic to its websites, building customer loyalty, encouraging repeat purchases, and developing incremental product and service revenue opportunities In addition, the company's use of strategies such as supplying personalized sites and services, as well as a number of different media, business development activities, and promotional approaches, makes this portion of its business distinctive Amazon also depends on online and conventional advertising, such as radio, television, and print media, as well as direct marketing; nevertheless, one of the key ways the firm attracts people to its websites is via its "Associates Program." This allows connected websites to offer items to their clients, with fulfillment handled by Amazon, and has proven to be quite successful 2.2 Diver into Amazon business models 2.2.1 FBA Liquidations This Amazon program assists sellers in recovering the value of surplus inventory and returned products while avoiding storage costs and avoiding inventory disposal Instead of paying a fee to remove or dispose of FBA inventory, you may simply utilize FBA Liquidations to have a wholesale liquidation work on your behalf This service is 14 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com applicable to both US and non-US sellers selling in the US (16) In certain ways, the FBA Liquidations program is a beneficial means of getting rid of unsold Amazon goods Amazon will find a buyer for the products that sellers have designated as excess or returned inventory and subject to liquidation These goods will be liquidated for sellers who participate in this program, enabling them to recoup a percentage of their inventory cost The net recovery value will be credited to the seller's account within 60 days and no later than 90 days after the liquidation order is submitted Amazon will establish the average selling price using a multiple factor examination in order to estimate the net recovery value of the products to be liquidated Among the things to be considered are: Your Sales History The Specific Asin's Sales History Amazon's Average FBA Selling Price For about 5% to 10% average selling price (ASP), the wholesale liquidators will purchase this inventory for a gross recovery value based on the contracted rates Afterwards, Amazon will then deduct fees before paying the seller the net recovery value of the liquidated items (17) Amazon began collecting FBA Liquidation costs on June 1, 2021 These costs will be incurred by the seller after the inventory item has left the fulfillment facility Amazon charges a PROCESSING FEE per item as well as a REFERRAL FEE depending on the category of the item The liquidations processing fee is per item and based on item size and weight 15 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com Table 2.1 The liquidations processing fee of FBA Liquidations The liquidations referral fee is 15% and calculated on the gross recovery value 2.2.2 Retail arbitrage Retail arbitrage is known in the E-Commerce world, as “…the act of buying products in local retail stores and then selling them through online marketplaces for a profit…” (18) Arbitrage is generally described as purchasing an item from one marketplace at a lower price and selling it on another marketplace for a higher return (19) In essence, arbitrage is a reselling activity in which the seller shops for a product through other retail sources rather than dealing directly with suppliers Items acquired in this manner are not always required in bulk or large quantities Retail arbitrage on Amazon is a sort of arbitrage that focuses on product sourcing from retail outlets or brick and mortar retailers Resellers see an item and then purchase it The seller will handle the shipment and storing of acquired products, sellers may buy clearance items at a discount and resell them on Amazon for a bigger profit 16 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com List of the best stores for retail arbitrage that sellers can purchase to sell on Amazon: Walmart Kmart Shopko Meijer Home Depot Lowes Menards Big Lots Walgreens CVS Rite Aid Toys R Us Bed Bath & Beyond Office Depot Staples Tuesday Morning Ollie’s Sellers may not have to worry about start-up costs while utilizing this model since it does not require substantial initial investments; retail arbitrage may be done with very little beginning investment Sellers may arrange the strategy in a flexible schedule, determine when and when not to engage in Retail Arbitrage, source the product on their 17 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com own time Retail arbitrage may be a full-time job or just a side hustle There is also some risk involved However, if the sellers understand how to correctly source their items, they may significantly reduce the risk It is fairly common to get 50% or higher returns with this model For the level of risk involved, a 50% return is incredible 2.2.3 Private label Amazon Private Label is about finding a product on Amazon that has high sales, but maybe a low number of reviews; getting that product, and labelling it as if it were yours Basically, what sellers will try to is to upgrade the presentation of that original existing product by creating their own brand This selling strategy does require an upfront cash investment Sellers will need to buy products and adapt them to their brand They must run a test drive to make sure that the product will sell well This includes analyzing the keywords that are already being used by the competition so that can rise above them and selling through Amazon Private Label is not a short-term goal and it has steady revenue which makes the seller's brand grow finely day by day Private Label products may significantly boost product visibility Particularly if the package and Amazon Product Detail Page match the seller's name, logo, and color design Customers will remember their brand and will be more inclined to return for more Branded items are typically more expensive than unbranded products Owning private label items allows sellers to successfully position themselves in the market They will have access to a select group of customers who are prepared to spend more money on their products Being consistent with private label, branding and marketing as much as possible will increase credibility for customers 2.2.4 Wholesale In the wholesale model, the seller purchases products in bulk directly from the manufacturer at a wholesale price and then makes a profit by selling the products on 18 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com Amazon Under this model, the seller may be one of many sellers who sells the product on Amazon or maybe the only seller offering this particular product in the Amazon store With a wholesale approach, buying products straight from the manufacturer is typically a very rapid procedure, and replenishing inventory is even easier and quicker This means in this model, the inventory sourcing is well-organized and dependable to adapt the needs flexibly and rapidly One of the most noticeable advantages of selling wholesale on Amazon is the established customer base This implies sellers have a pre-existing consumer base In order words, this is the brand's existing client base Customers are often aware of the thing that are selling, so sellers won't have to spend much time targeting their target audience and only need to focus mostly on their sales If the products that are selling is performing greatly, sellers always have the option to easily and quickly increase their inventory to carry on with the customer demand and this is the Scalability of the wholesale model When opposed to retail arbitrage and private label, the wholesale business is less risky For starters, they aren't the brand owner, therefore they don't have any obligation or responsibility for the product's manufacture and branding, and therefore, sellers carry no risk Instead, they are selling things that have proven reputations By using this model, when sellers receive Amazon brand approval, there will be reduced competition for Buy Box, and in some cases, this can even result in exclusive selling rights on Amazon 2.3 Amazon Annual Revenue 2.3.1 Amazon Revenue by Segment Amazon's segments are made up of three different revenue sources, which are a combination of locations and products North America, International, and AWS are the three segments The Amazon Web Services (AWS) segment covers the lion's share of 19 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com technological infrastructure expenditures depending on consumption The vast bulk of the remaining non-infrastructure technology expenditures are incurred in the United States and are attributed to the North America sector These segments reflect how worldwide the chief operating decision maker evaluates its business performance and manages its operations - From North America Segment: The North American segment includes retail sales of consumer goods and subscriptions across the entire North American market The majority of sales in this area are made through websites such as amazon.com and amazon.ca However, they also have affiliate partners Despite the epidemic, Amazon's net revenue set new records in 2020, the worst year for most firms since 2008 North America earned 61 percent, or $236 billion, of a total of $386 billion in net sales in 2020 In Q1 2021, the same segment produced $64.3 billion, accounting for 59.3 percent of total sales in the same timeframe (20) Figure 2.2 Amazon North America versus US E-Commerce Growth - From International Segment: Unlike the North American segment, Amazon's International Segment is based on global sales It is essentially the same in terms of consumer goods sales and subscriptions, but excluding the North American region, and it pulls in less money than the North American section In Q1 of 2021, 20 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com International contributed $30.65 billion in revenue which is 28.2% of the total revenue International sales increased 60% in Q1 2021, compared to the prior-year period Changes in foreign currency exchange rates impacted International net sales by $1.9 billion for Q1 2021 (21) Figure 2.3 Amazon International Sales - From Amazon Web Service (AWS): The Amazon Web Service segment includes all digital services and products, independent of geographical end-customer location AWS provides computing, storage, database, and other services to businesses, startups, and governments, as well as other entities interested in obtaining Amazon's Web services In Q1 of 2021, AWS contributed $ 13.50 billion in revenue which is 12.4% of the total revenue AWS sales increased 32% in Q1 2021, compared to the prior year period The sales growth primarily reflects increased customer usage, partially offset by pricing changes (22) 21 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com Figure 2.4 Annual revenue of AWS from 2013 to 2020 2.3.2 Amazon Revenue by Product Amazon makes money based on product groups This means that all markets, including AWS, are now segmented differently Amazon sells millions of things in total, but they can all be divided into three segments: - Amazon E-Commerce: Amazon's other main source of revenue is e-commerce Since 2017, the numbers have expanded tremendously and are expected to continue to climb for at least the next five years Amazon E-commerce is an ecosystem capable of engaging with all marketplaces and product sectors, in addition to its convenience of use and benefits Amazon's retail e-commerce sales were estimated to have exceeded 346 billion US dollars in 2019 The company's e-commerce sales are expected to reach 468.78 billion US dollars in 2021 According to revenue and market capitalization, Amazon is the world's largest online marketplace 22 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com Figure 2.5 Amazon’s worldwide retail e-commerce sales from 2017 to 2021 - Amazon Third-Party Sellers: Revenue from all third-party sellers has expanded dramatically over the last six years, confirming Amazon's growth in this area However, there is a small drop in 2021 Q1 that compensates the growth from 2020 Q4 Figure 2.6 Amazon Third-Party Seller Services Sales 23 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com - Amazon Subscription: The Subscription Ecosystem is a significant source of revenue for Amazon From Amazon Prime to Kindle and music streaming, Amazon's subscription services are extensive and not entirely unknown in many regions, such as China, where it suffers limitations but also challenges local competition However, last reported quarter 2021 Q1 it was $7.58 billion, up by 36% year-over-year from $5.56 billion From $19.21 billion in 2019, it increased by 31% to $25.21 billion in 2020 (23) Figure 2.7
