The client at 7-Eleven is searching for convenience rather than the lowest price That consumer is typically in a hurry and wants the store to be nearby and have a wide choice of products so that they may pick up modest amounts of basic housekeeping or food items that they require right away Clearly, 7-Eleven's supply chain needs to prioritize response Customers in this category anticipate and will pay for convenience III ISSUES IN SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT The global supply chain of 7-Eleven is quite complex There are so many suppliers in different places around the world so they have a large supply chain GROUP 10 – 7-ELEVEN TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com Moreover, each market has a different demand and level of need That is the reason why it is hard to manage their system and it also leads to the bullwhip effect and many consequences such as higher inventory cost or reduced global supply chain efficiency Bullwhip effect The bullwhip impact on the supply chain happens if changes in customer demand lead the supply chain firms to buy additional items in order to respond to new demand Typically the bullwing effect is generated through the supply chain, starting with the distributor, distributor, producer and finally the provider of raw material First, 7-Eleven releases new things on a regular basis Every week around 100 goods are shown In the year, around 70% of the goods offered in shops will be modified There is a challenge in forecasting demand for freshly released items, and so more demand uncertainty exists for them Seven-Eleven may lose part of the earnings by perhaps high-prognosis mistakes until its headquarters collects enough data to detect demand trends for these goods Second, unique events in the vicinity of shops can rapidly enhance the demand for particular products For example, nearby baseball games can increase the demand for beer and chips In that circumstance, companies must respond to the requirements of the client, or they will lose some earnings It may appear normal to have such significant demand unpredictability in such a reactive supply chain and may be fruitful for additional investment in research and development But for now SevenEleven loses millions of dollars annually due to the flaws Forecasting demand Demand forecasting is a process that takes historical sales data and uses it to make GROUP 10 – 7-ELEVEN TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com estimations (or forecasts) about customer demand in the future For enterprises, demand forecasting allows for estimating how many goods or services will sell and how much inventory needs to be ordered Demand forecasting lays the foundation for many other critical business assumptions such as turnover, profit margins, cash flow, capital expenditure, and capacity planning Demand forecasting is often associated with managerial economics and supply chain management, but it applies to every company in every industry Demand forecasting is a pivotal business process Many strategic and operational tactics are based on this forecast, such as budgeting, financial planning, sales and marketing plans, and capacity planning Because so many business decisions are contingent on demand forecasts, it is crucial to get an accurate prediction Like any planning aspect of any business process, forecasting plays a crucial role in the smooth functioning of your end-to-end supply chain First and foremost, customer satisfaction relies on forecasting abilities, since the more accurate your production runs are the faster we’ll be able to fulfill orders and keep our customers happy Now think about inventory carrying costs: the closer the company can get to equity in incoming supplies vs outgoing orders the less excess inventory we’ll be paying to store in our warehouses Along the same lines, accurate supply chain forecasting enables better optimization of resources The closer the company can get production levels to capacity, the less machine and employee downtime the company will encounter Forecast accuracy also affects over and under-runs in production, lowering time and resource waste even further Another consequence of failed forecasting demand is waste Because the products of 7- Eleven include fresh food such as meat, fish, egg or the products having short expiry date so if they produce redundantly and can not sell in the right time when fresh food is in the best condition, they have to throw out perished items or obsolete inventory, or marking it down to clear it out, are among the other wastes that result from poor demand forecasting Therefore, keeping the right amount of product in stock is critical to businesses There are steps in process forecasting that helps company follow this way to operate smoothly: GROUP 10 – 7-ELEVEN TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com 2.1 Understanding the objective All companies and projects are driven by specific goals and objectives These can be long or short term and can be based on achieving tangible, physical results or more abstract outcomes The objective of 7- Eleven company is to forecast the number of customers, the number of products sold and to classify those products in order 2.2 Integrating demand planning and forecasting - Types of Forecasting: Demand forecasting – production planning This is a collaborative process of developing joint forecasts and plans with supply chain partners, rather than doing them independently It is based on the premise that companies can be more successful if they work together to bring value to their customers, share risks of the marketplace, and improve their performance This may be one factor that leads to production inefficiency An accuracy of the demand forecast significantly affects safety stock and inventory levels, inventory holding costs, and customer service levels When the demand is highly seasonal, it is unlikely that an accurate forecast can be obtained without the use of an appropriate forecasting model The demand forecast is one among several critical inputs of a production planning process When the forecast is inaccurate, the obtained production plan will be unreliable, and may result in over- or understock problems To avoid them, a suitable amount of safety stock must be provided, which requires additional investment in inventory and results in an increased inventory holding costs - Forecasting time horizons: Short – range 7- Eleven is a retail chain with a lot of variety items from different sources If we forecast over a too long period of time, immediate response to customer needs will not be guaranteed For example, when the summer changes, the demand for water and soft drinks will increase We can only forecast for about one to two weeks to find out what products customers are liking during this time - Forecasting method: Quantitative method and qualitative method Qualitative methods are often called judgmental methods, air methods based on subjective opinions and judgment of individuals, such as managers, sales staff, or customers Asking customers whether they would buy a particular product, called GROUP 10 – 7-ELEVEN TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com all orders will be "Bombed" based on the "Set Routing" or previously programmed orders Goods preparation: In order to load the products into the truck, the Case activity, Full case or Break case, manages the goods preparation Loading During the loading procedure, the DC employees, along with staff from the transport business (Subcontractor), double-check the accuracy of the merchandise against the purchasing orders for that specific voyage A trip may include multiple destinations, with the route determined by the WMS program 7-Eleven organizes weekly meetings with all parties involved, including DC personnel and other subcontractors (transport firms) and facilitating parties, to discuss logistics and any issues that arise during the shipment process The service fees (transportation fees) are determined by the level of difficulty of specific jobs 3.3 Transportation Each store's order, which is all shipped in one shipment, may contain a variety of product amounts and categories The corporation divides two types of packing or the ‘Case' to be transported to the stores to simplify the process and boost efficiency in the DC and chain Full case: which is a ‘full package order’ Ex: a box full of instant noodles, one package of 12 bottles of water… Break case: which is ‘less’ than a ‘full package order’ Ex: toothpastes, bottles of water Normally the break case activity is a main activity in the DC because orders from each store typically are the break case basis The stores only need a small number of goods to fulfill demand at each shipping period to well-manage the shelves and inventory in a relatively small store 3.4 Distribution and warehousing Receiving supplies from vendors and shipping products as ordered are the key tasks at 7-Eleven DCs Having DCs in seven separate locations reduces the need for a warehouse and inventory storage in the overall chain 13 GROUP 10 – 7-ELEVEN TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com 7-Eleven uses a variety of IT solutions in DC to facilitate communication and planning for all processes and parties involved Purchase orders are received and complied from the stores to assure order rectification The Data Center serves as an analytic unit and disseminates information about a specific party IV THE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES Suppliers relationship management Distribution is the final link between producers and consumers in the supply chain The speed of delivery efficiency has a significant influence on the level of customer satisfaction The Seven-Eleven distribution system closely links the entire supply chain 7-Eleven is a global company, and 7-Eleven operates in more than 18 countries and has thousands of suppliers around the world Because 7-Eleven has a big number of suppliers, the 7-Eleven company provides a set of standard guidelines for all of its suppliers In order to choose suitable suppliers, 7-Eleven sets up a standard for suppliers, only when it passes it, it becomes a supplier for 7-Eleven This standard has been standardized by a panel of experts Based on this set common goal, 7-Eleven manages the relationship with suppliers by using a win-win strategy To develop a relationship of suppliers together 7-Eleven builds a relationship based on trust They believe that suppliers have met the above standards, so 7-Eleven's suppliers are of higher quality This brings long-term and sustainable development in the future if the two sides can ensure the standards and agree with each other on everything from price, quality These suppliers will be associated with the parent company to be able to connect to the network This makes the global supply chain more efficient, and when having good relationships with suppliers can get better prices than the market A closer look at Seven-Eleven's supply chain reveals that there is a clear indication of well-structured supply chain coordination aimed at maximizing overall supply chain surplus. This can be seen in the process of sharing information between stores and suppliers through the sales register, so the demand forecast is not affected by the bullwhip effect Despite having such a vision and set of standards, 7-Eleven still faces some 14 GROUP 10 – 7-ELEVEN TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com problems Because of the variety of suppliers, some suppliers will be attracted to competing companies Another issue is conflicts of interest When the company's competitors offer attractive deals to attract 7-Eleven's suppliers, it can be easy for the suppliers to be attracted and abandon company cooperation Therefore, 7-Eleven needs to have policies and commissions in the future to suit the circumstances of suppliers so that it is not drawn from competitors The company needs to deal regularly, must keep in touch with suppliers to know the needs and desires of suppliers Lean management 2.1 Distribution: Cross- Docking Cross docking is a logistics process in which products from a supplier or manufacturing plant are delivered straight to a consumer or retail chain with little or no processing or storage time Cross docking takes place in a distribution docking terminal, which usually has trucks and dock doors on two sides (inbound and outgoing) and little storage space Cross docking is used for a variety of reasons, including: ● Create a central location where products can be sorted and comparable products may be grouped for delivery to various destinations in the most efficient and timely manner This is referred to as a "hub and spoke" method ● To save money on transportation, combine several smaller product loads into one mode of transport This procedure is known as consolidation arrangements ● To make the delivery process to the consumer easier, break down large product loads into smaller loads for transportation Deconsolidation agreements are a term used to characterize this process 15 GROUP 10 – 7-ELEVEN TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com 2.2 ERP system ERP is critical for combatting inefficiency, minimizing waste, and ensuring that employees can better direct their efforts Both systems' integration may present some distinct issues It is in your company's best interests for you and your employees to fully comprehend the function of ERP in the SCM process Based on the supply chain elements that it provides, 7-Eleven's ERP may be separated into criterias: ● System at the store:The Electronic Order Booking System, or EOB, is the primary system used in the store In 7-Eleven stores, the general store information system consists of the POS, Store Computer, and EOB device Point of Sales (POS): When products are sold, POS permits data to be collected and stored The item information was received from the store computer and the time of sale was automatically recorded when a customer purchased an item and paid at the POS register In addition, the cashier noted the customer's age and gender These data will be interpreted in specific ways that may be analyzed and used in analysis and planning at the corporate, district, and store levels This POS data is automatically transferred to a host computer through the internet 16 GROUP 10 – 7-ELEVEN TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com Store Controller (SC): SC serves as a system that monitors and processes internal store data and connects to the external network or the corporate headquarters The SC's responsibilities include: Purchasing, Receiving merchandise, transferring merchandise, Returning merchandise, Updating merchandise data in the store Electronic Order Booking (EOB): It uses barcode scanning to collect data, and the individual placing the purchase can order while strolling along the aisles by looking at the portable screen The purchase procedure starts with the staff downloading data from SC, then scanning the product's barcode to check inventories on the item of interest The EOB screen will reveal the product's inventory position on the shelf and in the store's inventory after scanning the barcode The employees can then determine whether or not to acquire additional things by entering the purchase order into the gadget ● System at Distribution Center and Warehouse The distribution center and warehouse system is focused on managing orders from 7Eleven stores and coordinating transportation activities, which needs the DC to meet demand with internal utilization and capacity The “Warehouse Management System,” or WMS, is the name of this system Aside from transportation management, the corporation has a system in place to speed up the product sorting, storage, and preparation process by utilizing an IT tool called "Digital Picking" to increase overall DC efficiency Following the DC's analysis of the purchasing orders from the head office, the next step is to prepare the products purchased for the stores by placing them in the "Break Case" box ● Back Office System Accounting System, Merchandise Analysis System (MAS), and Product Information Management System are the three types of back office systems Product information, Purchase order system, Sales reconciliation, Catalog Order, Compilation of sales, purchase order, and receive order in the MIS system, Payroll, and Human resource are all handled by the product information system 17 GROUP 10 – 7-ELEVEN TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com V RECOMMENDATION By analyzing and pointing out problems in Seven-Eleven's global supply chain management, it is important to be able to improve the quality of supply chain operations to solve the problem of demand forecasting This part shows the recommendations that help the company enhance the efficiency of the global supply chain Tanpin Kanri model Tanpin Kanri is best described as the customer and the personnel, not the firm, deciding what sells in the store Customers first come in and purchase items from the store The personnel then watch what is selling and what is being kept on the shelf as a shelf warmer The store personnel will then decide what to place on the shelves in order for all of the things to sell Tanpin Kanri meets and decides on the customer's needs, rather than the corporation trying to sell a product or guessing what the consumer wants Seven-Eleven Japan's retail management, which employs Tanpin Kanri, differs slightly from industry standard The majority of supply chain networks use point-of-sale (POS) data to develop automatic replenishment systems to replace inventory that has been sold out Typically, goods that have performed successfully in the past are ordered in larger numbers Tanpin Kanri's replenishment system takes into account a variety of criteria in addition to historical data in order to forecast future demand Employees gather POS data and use it with other elements to forecast a product's future demand Tanpin Kanri's replenishment system takes into account a variety of criteria in addition to historical data in order to forecast future demand Employees gather POS data and use it with other elements to forecast a product's future demand While both employ POS data in their inventory replenishment systems, the fundamental distinction is that Tanpin Kanri orders merchandise in a forwardthinking manner, whilst other retailers rely solely on historical trends Furthermore, unlike other businesses, Tanpin Kanri uses a manual procedure to order inventory, relying on the judgment of local personnel rather than an automated system In Japan, Seven- Eleven has been very successful using this model The company can synchronize stores around the world to apply and improve accuracy in demand forecasting The in-vehicle terminal: 18 GROUP 10 – 7-ELEVEN TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com By adding a driving recording feature to in-vehicle computer terminals, the new system facilitates the operation of real-time functionality, understanding and knowing how the transportation process goes The cloud network control support aids in the enhancement of logistic quality The in-vehicle terminal features a high-speed drive recorder on board that is linked to the in-vehicle network system station The new system allows 7-Eleven to know where a driver is at any given time, which is especially useful for transporting perishable commodities like raw and fresh food products This system not only makes the management easier, but also reduces the transport time of the trucks 19 GROUP 10 – 7-ELEVEN TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com VI REFERENCES Supply chain world, About 7-Eleven, Available at:
