download : skknchat@gmail.com PART-TIME JOB I INTRODUCTION According to a research taken by Tran, Nguyen, and Che (2016) part-time employment among students, particularly in universities and colleges has become an increasing phenomenon in recent years An growing level of attraction from a number of researchers on student part time employment since the early 1990s (Robotham , 2011) According to Doyle (2020), a part-time job is defined as a job that require fewer work-hour than a full- time job but there is not a particular set of time for part-time or full-time jobs, hence, whether it is considered as a part-time job will depend on company’s policy and the hours that employers’ requirement of full-time jobs traditionally, the standard requirement of hours for a part-time job range from under 30 to 35 hours per week According to Maftuhah (2014), there are a lot of kinds of part time jobs for college students, for example tutor ( teaching assistant in secondary or high school) , waiters or sellers Robinson (1999) conducted a study, which found that over 55 percent of all student-workers choose sales as a part-time job A survey was conducted in Australia by Salamonson and Andrew (2006), they reported that over three-quarter of students having a part-time job while studying and they tended to work 14 hours a week on average Another study by Morrison ( 2009) also showed effects on their academic results Metcalf ( 2001) performed a study across four universities that found 75% students of four universities she took survey held a part time job with haft of those reported work less than 12 hours a week, three-quarters worked under 16 hours and 4% students working over 20 hours per week Students’ demand to find a part time job while studying depends on their age, study course and major ( Tran, Nguyen and Che, 2016) There was 22.7% students under 20 years old , 35.82% students aged 20-22 and 50% students aged 23 and older want to find a part time job This research also concluded that the number of second and third year college students who were long for a part time job was significant higher than other kinds of college students This research aim to identify the pros and cons of doing a part time jobs while studying and the reasons why students choose to engage in part time employment before they graduate Additionally, this research is going to indicate how part time jobs might effect on students’ academic results BODY 1 The reasons for students to take a part time job while studying According to Vuong (2015), there are various reason which students have practical experience, create relationships, prove their ability and bravery in front of the business The most common reason for college students to take a part time jobs was reported by Morrison (2009) was for earning money, particularly for university tuition fees and their daily expenses This is really similar to what Callender (2008) found that the reason that make students have a part time job while still at university is that they need money to buy essential things and pay for their loans Barron and Anastasiadou (2007) found that there are a lot of students could not affordable for expensive tuition fees and other living costs, hence, they find way to make money by their own Tran, Nguyen and Che (2016) conducted a study, which concluded that 70% students want to increase their income so they decided to enroll to part time employment Furthermore, some of the results in Kamal (2015) research indicated other reasons for taking a part-time job among students is that they just want to take advantage of their leisure time as well as to gain experience to write down on their CV before they graduate and enter to their future careers In addition, a research was in favor of the independence that the part time job give them and students believed that part time employment will give them several advantages for their careers in the future This study also concluded that only 12% students indicated the kind of job they took was the job they want to do in the future 2 The benefits of part time jobs to college students According to O’Donovan (2016) the amount of time that students spend on their part-time job is a key factor in whether their academic results in university will be advantageous or disadvantageous ones Particularly, he showed that it will be positive if students work for low to medium number of hours However, if students take part time jobs for a high number of hours it will lead to negative effects to their academic performances Robinson (1999) conducted a survey and found that 73% students who had a part time job tended to have a better social lives compared to 66% of students do not take any part time jobs It is understandable that there is a higher number of working students who are pleased with the money they gained from part time jobs Moreover, students who engage in part time employment can be more financial independent than ones who do not have a part time job This study concluded that working students can have wider social contacts and this will benefit to improve students’ TIEU LUAN MOI costs as well as can help their parents with financial burden for college tuition fees Other positive impact of part time jobs is that part time jobs will lead to stronger academic character since it helps students can have time management skill and the experience for their future careers ( O’ Donovan, 2016) Additionally, students can get used to working environment before they enroll to careers in the future (Wang and Chen, 2012) The research of O’Donovan (2016) found that part time employment also help students to have a better time and working organization such as the higher concentration on tasks or assignments, which might results in their higher grades in school This study also indicated that working students might work harder in general than students do not have part time jobs This is similar to the study of Robotham (2011), it showed that there are more than 50% students found that they had a better time-management skill after working a part time job This study concluded that drawbacks of part time job to college students A number of recent researches showed there are common beliefs that working part time job while students still studying in college will lead to distraction from their studying because of the lower amount of time they spend on study and the lack of energy after taking part time jobs might result in students’ GPA in college (Muluk, 2017) This is similar with the study of Wadood, Hussain and Raza (2018), this study also found that 84.4% students believed holding part time job will have negative effects on their academic achievements According to a research of Broadbridge and Swanson (2005) students holding a part time job tended to have more sense of stress or more general mental health and psychological wellbeing Robotham (2011) conducted a survey and found that 54% working students responded they have higher level of stress after holding part time jobs and 28% students said that part time employment lead to their decreasing ability to cope with stress Moreover, Tran, Nguyen, and Che (2016) found that 59% students taking their survey reported part time jobs can have drawbacks to their learning performance or their mental and physical health Another drawback of part time employment is that students might spend less time for assignments in school Wadood, Hussain and Raza (2018) found that 69.3% students reported in students who take part in a part time job are less engaged in school Singh, Chang and Dika (2007) showed that students working for long hours spent the less amount of time on their homework, were not
