Diagnostic Switches
Use the switches listed in this section for diagnostic purposes.
Some, like the /Safe switches, disable features when you start Outlook. Use these
switches to troubleshoot problems.
Other switches, such as /CleanFinders, delete or clean up various settings or items and
give you a fresh slate. You'll use these switches when a specific feature doesn't work
correctly, including when your reminders don't fire, your rules don't work, and so on.
Use the clean switches with caution. In some cases, they delete your
customizations, including the clean rules and clean views switches.
Others, like the clean reminder switch, are safe to use because they
clean items that Outlook re-creates.
The final switches in this group are those that reset Outlook to use default settings,
including ResetNavPane, which removes all of your shortcuts from the Navigation bar
and resets the buttons to their original positions.
• /CheckClient— Prompts for the default manager of email, news, and contacts. Use
this when another email client is set to default and Outlook doesn't ask whether it
should be the default.
• /CleanClientRules— Starts Outlook and deletes client-based rules. Works with all
mail account types.
• /CleanDmRecords— Deletes the logging records saved when a manager or a
delegate declines a meeting (Exchange Server only).

store.

be used only when you're able to connect to your Microsoft Exchange server.

care—this switch deletes all existing rules.

file) from the server and enables the free/busy information from the Outlook
calendar to be used and viewed by all Schedule+ 1.0 users.

Server only). Use with care—this switch deletes server-based rules.

custom views you created. Use with care—this switch deletes all views, including

MAPI profile (*.prf). If Outlook is already open when you run the command, the
new profile is imported on the next clean launch.
• /NoCustomize— Starts Outlook without loading outcmd.dat (customized toolbars)
and *.fav files. Use this to troubleshoot problems when Outlook hangs or crashes
when you first start it. If Outlook loads using this switch, delete outcmd.dat.
• /NoExtensions— Starts Outlook with extensions turned off, but listed in the Add-
In Manager.
• /ResetFolderNames— Resets default folder names (such as Inbox and Sent Items)
to the default names in the current Office user interface language. This is used
when you connect to an Exchange Server which uses a language different from
your Office installation.
• /ResetFolders— Restores missing folders for the default delivery location. Use
this switch if you use OWA to access your mailbox and accidentally delete a
folder.
• /ResetNavPane— Clears and regenerates the Navigation Pane for the current
profile. All shortcuts on the shortcut bar are deleted.
• /Safe— Starts Outlook without extensions, Reading Pane, or toolbar
customization.
• /Safe:1— Starts Outlook with the Reading Pane off. Use this if you have a
message in the inbox selected and it causes Outlook to hang or crash.
• /Safe:2— Starts Outlook without checking mail at startup. Use when you don't
want Outlook to check for new email, but don't want to disable automatic checking
in Tools, Send/Receive.
• /Safe:3— Starts Outlook with extensions turned off, but listed in the Add-In
Manager.
• /Safe:4— Starts Outlook without loading Outcmd.dat (customized toolbars) and
