perspective 93 APPENDIX Little House on the Prairie (novel) 96 viii “Better come,” Pa told them “You can come back for your wagon.” “No,” the woman said They wouldn’t leave the wagon; everything they owned in the world was in it So at last Pa drove on, leaving them sitting on the wagon tongue, all alone on the prairie Pa muttered to himself: “Tenderfeet! Everything they own, and no dog to watch it Didn’t keep watch himself And tied his horses with ropes!” Pa snorted “Tenderfeet!” he said again “Shouldn’t be allowed loose west of the Mississippi!” “But, Charles! Whatever will become of them?” Ma asked him “There are soldiers at Independence,” said Pa “I’ll tell the captain, and he’ll send out men to bring them in They can hold out that long But it’s durned lucky for them that we came by If we hadn’t, there’s no telling when they would have been found.” Laura watched that lonely wagon until it was only a small lump on the prairie Then it was a speck Then it was gone All the rest of that day Pa drove on and on They didn’t see anybody else When the sun was setting, Pa stopped by a well A house had once been there, but it was burned The well held plenty of good water, and Laura and Mary gathered bits of half-burned wood to make the fire, while Pa unhitched and watered the horses and put them on picket-lines Then Pa took the seat down from the wagon and lifted out the food-box The fire burned beautifully, and Ma quickly got supper Everything was just as it used to be before they built the house Pa and Ma and Carrie were on the wagon-seat, Laura and Mary sat on the wagon tongue They ate the good supper, hot from the camp fire Pet and Patty and Bunny munched the good grass, and Laura saved bits for Jack, who mustn’t beg but could eat his fill as soon as supper was over Then the sun went down, far away in the west, and it was time to make the camp ready for night Pa chained Pet and Patty to the feed-box at the end of the wagon He chained Bunny to the side And he fed them all their supper of corn Then he sat by the fire and smoked his pipe, while Ma tucked Mary and Laura into bed and laid Baby Carrie beside them She sat down beside Pa at the fire, and Pa took his fiddle out of its box and began to play “Oh, Susanna, don’t you cry for me,” the fiddle wailed, and Pa began to sing “I went to California    With my wash-pan on my knee,  And every time I thought of home,    I wished it wasn’t me.” “Do you know, Caroline,” Pa stopped singing to say, “I’ve been thinking what fun the rabbits will have, eating that garden we planted.” “Don’t, Charles,” Ma said “Never mind, Caroline!” Pa told her “We’ll make a better garden Anyway, we’re taking more out of Indian Territory than we took in.” “I don’t know what,” Ma said, and Pa answered, “Why, there’s the mule!” Then Ma laughed, and Pa and the fiddle sang again “In Dixie land I’ll take my stand,  And live and die in Dixie!  Away, away, away, away,  Away down south in Dixie!” They sang with a lilt and a swing that almost lifted Laura right out of bed She must lie still and not wake Carrie Mary was sleeping, too, but Laura had never been wider awake She heard Jack making his bed under the wagon He was turning round and round, trampling down the grass Then he curled into that round nest with a flop and a sigh of satisfaction Pet and Patty were munching the last of their corn, and their chains rattled Bunny lay down beside the wagon They were all there together, safe and comfortable for the night, under the wide, starlit sky Once more the covered wagon was home The fiddle began to play a marching tune, and Pa’s clear voice was singing like a deep-toned bell “And we’ll rally round the flag, boys,  We’ll rally once again,  Shouting the battle-cry of Freedom!” Laura felt that she must shout, too But softly Ma looked in through the round hole in the wagon-cover “Charles,” Ma said, “Laura is wide awake She can’t go to sleep on such music as that.” Pa didn’t answer, but the voice of the fiddle changed Softly and slurringly it began a long, swinging rhythm that seemed to rock Laura gently She felt her eyelids closing She began to drift over endless waves of prairie grasses, and Pa’s voice went with her, singing “Row away, row o’er the waters so blue,  Like a feather we sail in our gum-tree canoe  Row the boat lightly, love, over the sea;  Daily and nightly I’ll wander with thee.” THE END TRANSCRIBER NOTES Misspelled words and printer errors have been corrected Where multiple spellings occur, majority use has been employed Punctuation has been maintained except where obvious printer errors occur The version used for production of this ebook was published by Harper Collins in 1953 Illustrations by Garth Williams in that version are not yet in the public domain, so have been left out of this ebook The cover used for this ebook is from the second edition [The end of Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder] UBND TỈNH BÌNH DƯƠNG TRƯỜNG ĐẠI HỌC THỦ DẦU MỘT CỘNG HÒA XÃ HỘI CHỦ NGHĨA VIỆT NAM Độc lập – Tự – Hạnh phúc Bình Dương, ngày 12 tháng 01 năm 2022 BIÊN BẢN CUỘC HỌP HỘI ĐỒNG CHẤM LUẬN VĂN THẠC SĨ Của học viên: Huỳnh Thị Thanh Huyền Về đề tài: LINGUISTIC EXPRESSIONS TO DESCRIBE THE APPRECIATION FOR NATURE IN “LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE” WRITTEN BY LAURA INGALLS WILDER Tại Hội đồng trực tuyến - Trường Đại học Thủ Dầu Một, ngày 12 tháng 01 năm 2022 Hội đồng chấm luận văn thành lập theo Quyết định số, 2025/QĐ-ĐHTDM, ngày 29/12/2021 Hiệu trưởng Trường Đại học Thủ Dầu Một nghe học viên: Huỳnh Thị Thanh Huyền trình bày tóm tắt nội dung luận văn thạc sĩ Nhận xét, đặt câu hỏi thành viên Hội đồng chấm luận văn: 1/-TS Trần Thanh Dũ (Chủ tịch hội đồng) - Nhận xét (đính kèm Bản nhận xét) - Câu hỏi: On page 79, the author stated: “It can be drawn from the thesis “linguistic expressions to describe the appreciation for Nature in Little House on the Prairie written by Laura Ingalls Wilder” that Laura Ingalls Wilder had excellent abilities of using lexical items, structural devices, and rhetorical devices, to depict nature” Can you clarify your ideas? - Many spelling errors: etc (p.11), enjoye (p.13) appeares (p.16) antonomy (p.16) offere (p.18) as well as as (p.24) as well as as (p.36) washappyand (p.62) equipments (p.64) shooting (p.64) meaned (p.64) arrangeboxesand (p.72) promise land (p.27) - There is an unclear understanding of Approach and method: in (p.24) the candidate mentions to The Literary Research Approach, according to Altick… (1987) … whereas in (p.25) concludes … the use of literary research method which is related to Qualitative Method is indisputable - In term of rhetorical devices, the research mainly clarifies the metaphor, simile, personification and hyperbole; therefore, there are lack of other rhetorical devices such as emotive language, anaphora, epiphora, etc - Lack of page number of citations: e.g some definitions of “Nature”, “Appreciation” from the dictionaries - (p.23) Inaccurately used words: “Summarily, this chapter concentrates on describing the overview of the study … ” (the study or the knowledge related to the study?) - The research, especially, implications (pay attention to the learners’level – highschool students not university students) and conclusion, should carefully be rewritten to fit perfectly the research aim - TS Trần Ngọc Mai To improve the quality of the thesis, the author should: - Cite up-to-date references instead of ones that were published thirty or fifty years ago - Cite research papers in the field instead of unpublished thesis - Revise session 1.4, in the present paper, the author mainly talked about the significance of the novel itself, not the study - Move the summaries of the book chapters to Appendix section - Describe the methods and how the data was collected and analysed in detail - Move the excerpts in chapter to the Appendix - Rewrite the pedagogical implications section (Mainly the author were talking about the book itself, not the findings of the present study; suggestions were not appropriate and convincing, especially when the author said that the English Program Director and Faculty of Foreign Languages should evaluate the curriculum, the syllabus, and apply Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book “Little House on the Prairie” as a compulsory material The other should also rewrite other implications in the paper) - Revise the Limitations session The ones the author mentioned were not really limitations of the present research paper For example, for limitations in scope of the study the author said that she could find more examples of nouns, verbs, adjectives, than adverbs and idioms Why is this a limitation? I have the same concern for the other examples the author gave in this section) - Correct the grammatical errors throughout the paper (there are many of them) 3) Đề nghị công nhận học vị Thạc sĩ cho REPUBLIC OF VIET NAM Independence - Freedom - Happiness M.A THESIS COMMENTS AND EVALUATION Research title: Linguistic Expressions to describe the Appreciation for Nature in Little House on the Prairie written by Laura Ingalls Wilder Candidate: Huynh Thi Thanh Huyen Supervisor: Dr Nguyen Thi Thanh Tam Examiner: Le Thi Thanh, PhD Role: First Examiner COMMENTS Study significance, scientific and practical implications This thesis starts with an interesting topic investigating the linguistic expressions to describe the appreciation of nature in the world-known series Little House on the Prairie With that objective the research aims to suggest not only a literature interpretation technique but also an ESL approach using literary texts to promote linguistic competence In general, the thesis contains all necessary components of an MA thesis The content in each chapter is appropriately presented The candidate has proved her competence in reaching her goal of study with linguistic and ELT significance and implications The Abstract, the Acknowledgements, and the Statement of Originality include the basic information but language use should be carefully checked to be formally presented Additionally, the findings of the study are not sufficiently summarized in the Abstract, the term “Linguistic Expressions” were used five times without providing their specific connotations It should be carefully revised to highlight the contributions of the thesis to ELT field Introduction and Literature Review With the first chapter, the candidate was able to cite the sources of statements to make the study scientifically based with previous studies by Vietnamese and English authors However, Thanh Huyen may need to provide some more major studies on the linguistic issues in Little House on the Prairie to highlight the gap to identify the necessity of conducting research on expression of appreciation in a separate part It is obvious the author concluded the findings of the study in the significance of the study in terms of theory and practice: “Thanks to the unlimited energy, people can overcome the difficulties themselves just like the characters in the book Moreover, the Linguistic Expressions, known as Lexical items, Structural devices, and Rhetorical devices, used in the novel, are the valuable reference sources for literature teaching not only in English but also in Vietnamese.” (p.4) The result and significance should be better informed with some prudence Moreover, Chapter does not indicate the discussion of relevant theories much Instead, it simply lists ideas, and the coherence and cohesion within different sections are not well established Section 2.3, Review of The Previous Studies, is very short (pp 21-22) It should include more studies in the context of Vietnam in relation to how linguistic expressions promote ELT So, there is no description of the Theoretical Framework that is very important to form the research design Research methodology Chapter needs rewriting to properly describe the function of a research method because the candidate gave pages out of the total 11 pages to make the summary of 26 chapters of the book while the other pages are for writing again the main research question and sub-research questions of the first chapter The two sections for data collection and sampling cannot convey the meanings of the subtitles Structure and format of the paper The study is presented in the conventional format of an MA thesis with chapters and the required content included in each section However, there are no consistencies in format, citations and idea organization that turn the thesis into serious format errors Research findings and contributions The candidate could reach her goal of study by listing the linguistic expressions used in Little House on the Prairie in four categories of appreciation for natural landscape, plants, animals and human nature in relation to lexical terms, structural devices and rhetorical devices When discussing the results, the candidate was able to confirm the pedagogical implications teaching and learning English language She could also point out the limitations of the study in terms of scope and study method which are good issue in the last chapter because the candidate could make an overview of her study Suggestions for research improvement 1.Many statements should be modified or adjusted as they tend to bias the contributions of this study 2.The administrative titles of some authors should be omitted to follow the format of citation: Professor John E Miller (1920) cited on page 8, of David Boaz, by David Boaz (2015), an executive vice president of the Cato Institute (also page 8) They should be viewed as authors with publications, not adminitrators 3.On page 11, Table has the title “List of main current definitions of “Nature” in Western dictionaries.” However, there is no sources of the dictionary with the page number to verify whether the definitions are paraphrased or direct quotations 4.Many mistakes and errors grammar or sentence structures distort the meanings of many sentences: “This study is carried out in order to have a deeply knowledge about the Linguistic Expressions used throughout “Little House on the Prairie” of Laura Ingalls Wilder ”(p.4) “…After doing the investigation, the Linguistic Expressions, which are applied to show the “Appreciation”, are listed distinctively ”(p.4) General evaluation and scoring Despite the unavoidable shortcomings, the thesis has proved the candidate’s efforts in reviewing related literature, examining the “Little House of the Prairie” to identify the linguistic items, and doing analysis for bringing to the book into a new highlight for better meaning from literary interpretation The study needs modifications to better represent the candidate’s passion in research At this stage I would like to congratulate Thanh Huyen for completing the thesis and presenting it in the oral defense this morning Questions 1.On page 12, in defining the term “Nature” there is a statement, “In this research, how Laura Ingalls Wilder described the “Appreciation” for “Nature” is put into action The research analyses terms of the literacy devices she used to depict “Nature”; so that, shows the “Appreciation” and gratitude for it Nature in this context is considered in a wide range including the landscape, fauna and flora, and also the deepest instinct within human.” Please verify the reason why you referred nature in terms of “the landscape, fauna and flora, and also the deepest instinct within human.” 2.In section 5.2.3, Implications in interpretation, the candidate wrote “Depending on the research results, there are some valuable applies in interpretation especially in the field of rhetorical devices In interpretation, the interpreters are easy to misunderstand the implicature of the speakers which mainly related the rhetorical devices Therefore, they can improve their knowledge of rhetorical devices, which are concretely analyzed and presented in this study.” (p.83) Please define the meanings of “interpretation” and “interpreters” Thu Dau Mot City, 12 January 2022 Le Thi Thanh, PhD THE SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF VIET NAM Independence - Freedom - Happiness M.A THESIS COMMENTS AND EVALUATION Research title: Linguistic Expressions to describe the appreciation for Nature in “Little house in the Prairies” written by Laura Ingalls Wilde Candidate: Huỳnh Thị Thanh Huyền Supervisor(s): Nguyễn Thị Thanh Tâm, Ph.D Examiner: Huỳnh Thị Bích Phượng, Ph.D Role: Reviewer Examiner’s institution: Banking University Ho Chi Minh City COMMENTS Study significance, scientific and practical implications The research paper reveals valuable significance both theoretically and practically in term of literature generally and linguistic study particularly The implications are stated with considerations; however, parts and details make it confusing, impossible and irrelevant to the other parts of the study, which should be rewritten Appropriateness of the research topic - The research topic is inappropriate to an M.A research paper, which nearly focuses on listing the Linguistic Expressions of “Appreciation for Nature” used in the novel “Little House on the Prairie” written by Laura Ingalls Wilder - The aim presented in the Introduction does not agree with that mentioned in the Abstract Research methodology The methodology supports the study; however, the contents of the Chapter 3Methodolody not fulfill the parts needed for a research paper, actually For example, there are no descriptions of the setting, samples, instruments, data analysis Structure and format of the paper The study organization include chapters, which satisfies the requirements of an M.A thesis; however, the Statement of Problem needs considering for its existence Research findings and contributions The research results absolutely contribute to the teaching and learning in term of linguistics as presented in chapter Suggestions for research improvement - The naming of tittle: is supposed to be more accurate and to agree with the Research questions - Key Term related to the title: should be clarified and unique (novel, book, composition (p 25, 26, 35)) - The research subjects: should be particular, who are also in relevance with samples/ sampling stated in Chapter Besides, the research subjects can be generally included in The Introduction (the Background or the Problem statement) - Confusing Terms related to research subjects are found in the paper: • To the Significance of the study (p.4,5): English Language Learners, readers, teenagers, adults • To the Abstract and Implications: students, young learners, high school students, university students, the public, readers - no sample is found in Chapter - Statement of Sampling: confusing, inappropriate (summaries of the whole novel and its chapters) - The only Research question focuses on identifying the linguistic expressions does not satisfy the requirements of a scientific research paper Its results cannot completely reflect the significances and purposes of the study - The contents of Problem statement and Previous studies are nearly the same, which are suggested to be rewritten - The summary presented at the beginning or at the end of a chapter is supposed to conclude all the key points followed up (Chapter 3, Chapter 5) - Mechanical, lexical, grammatical, structural mistakes should be thoroughly checked General evaluation and scoring The paper basically meets the requirements of an M.A thesis, so it deserves scoring 5.25 Questions - Would you please state the reasons for your choice of the third in the series of nine novels? - What is the key purpose of examining the Linguistic Expressions for, improvement of English communication skills, reading skills, writing skills, interpretation, curriculum,
