Form: S + was / were + V-ing

- Was: dùng cho ngôi thứ nhất số ít (I) và ngôi thứ ba số ít (He, She, It,..).

- Were: dùng cho các ngôi khác.

Ex. At this time last Sunday, we were fishing on the river.

2. Use: Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn tả:

- Một hành động kéo dài ở quá khứ trong khoảng thời gian không xác định.

Ex. It was getting warmer and warmer.

Nếu trong câu có thời gian xác định thì

thì QKTD diễn tả hành động xảy ra vào một thời điểm xác định cụ thể, thờng dùng với cụm từ "at... o'clock".

Ex. What were you doing at 8p.m yesterday ?

- Một hành động đang sảy ra ( dùng thì

quá khứ tiếp diễn) thì một hành động khác xen vào ( dùng thì quá khứ đơn) thờng đi kèm với liên từ " when" ( khi).

Ex. When we were going to school, it rained.

- Hai hoặc nhiều sự kiện sảy ra cùng một lúc - song song ở quá khứ. Thờng đi kèm với liên từ " while" ( trong khi).

Ex. I was doing homework while my mom was watching TV.

A. Aims: Reported speech

B. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to hold using of reported speech and do some kinds of exercises.

C. Language content:

D. Teaching aids: Textbook, Exercises.

E. Ways of working: T – whole class, group work, individual work.

II. Procedure:

- Call some Ss do homework. Individual work

* New lesson:

- Ask Ss to repeat usage of reported speech.

- Give some examples.

- Which word is use in reported ?

T - whole class

I. Direct speech( lời nói trực tiếp): là lời nói của một ngời nào đợc thuật lại đúng nguyên v¨n.

- Mai said: " I'm studying Enlish next year."

- Quang said to me: "My parents will award me an interesting book."

Lời nói trực tiếp luôn đợc viết giữa hai dấu trích/ ngoặc kép

II. Indirect speech ( Lời nói gián tiếp/ Lời t- ờng thuật gián tiếp): là lời nói của một ngời nào đợc thuật lại với từ và cách nói của ngời thuật lại, nhng ý nghĩa không đổi.

- Mai said (that) she was studying Enlish the following year.

- Quang told me ( that) her parents would award her an interesting book.

Lời nói gián tiếp không đợc viết giữa hai dấu trích và luôn tận cùng bằng dấu chấm câu Lời nói trực tiếp hay lời nói gián tiếp gồm có hai phÇn:

a. Mệnh đề tờng thuật( reporting clause) và lời nãi trùc tiÕp(Direct speech)

b. Mệnh đề tờng thuật( reporting clause) và lời nói gián tiếp (Indirect speech)

III. Reported verbs( §éng tõ têng thuËt) a. Say: thờng đợc dùng ở lời nói trực tiếp

b. Tell: thờng đợc dùng ở lời nói gián tiếp thay cho SAY TO, và đợc theo sau bởi túc từ

* Chú ý: TELL không bao giờ đợc ở lời nói trùc tiÕp

- Ask Ss to repeat change the Direct speech into Indirect speech .

- Give some examples.

SAY TO không bao giờ đợc ở lời nói gián tiếp

* Ngoài Say và Tell nhiều động từ khác cũng

đợc dùng ở mệnh đề tờng thuật tuỳ theo ý nghĩa và loại câu của lời nói trực tiếp

IV. Change the Direct speech into Indirect speech :

Khi đổi Lời nói trực tiếp sang lời nói gián tiếp chúng ta đổi ngôi , thì và từ chỉ thời gian và nơi chèn

a.Persons:

* The first persons( I/We)

* The second persons ( you)

* The third persons ( He/She? It/ They) b. Tenses:Direct speech Indirect speech

Simple present → simple past Present continuous → past continuous simple past → simple past perfect present perfect → past perfect present

simple future → Would / should +v can → could

have to → had to must

may → might

1. He said:" I met my former teacher at the airport"

→ He said that he had met his former teacher at the airpor

2. Tam said to me : "When I arrive, the boys are decorating the classroom"

→ Tam told me that when he arrived , the boys were decorating the classroom

c. Time words:

now → at once, then, immediately ago → before

today → that day to night → that night

yesterday→ the day before, the previous day tomrrow → the next/ following day

last… → the . before, the previous .… … the day before yesterday → two days before the day after tomorrow → in two days' time d. Place words:

this / these( point the time) → that/ those this / these + nouns → the + nouns

* Practice:

I. Turn these sentences into indirect sentences 1. " I want my room to look nice at the festival," An said

2. " We are going to the rice- cooking contest," said Mr Robinson

3. " You have to take at least two bottles of water,"

Period 15: Indirect ed question I. Preparation:

A. Aim: Indirected questions

B. Object: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to usage or indirect questions and do some kinds of exercise.

C. Content language:

E. Ways of working: T - whole class, team work, individual work.

II. Procedure:

- Ask Ss to repeat usage of indirected questions with form " yes/no - question)

- Give some questions.

T - whole class

1-Dạng câu trực tiếp là câu hỏi đảo (Yes/ No- questions)

*Cách chuyển:

-Đổi said → asked (hoặc wanted to know/

wondered) sau đó thêm tân ngữ (nếu cần thiết).

-Bỏ dấu ngoặc kép, dấu phẩy và dấu hỏi.

-Đặt If/ whether lên trước chủ ngữ của câu gián tiếp +động từ lùi thì.

-Đổi ngôi, đổi từ chỉ thời gian và nơi chốn(nếu cần thiết).

*Công thức:

Trực tiếp: Do/ Does/ Did + S + V-nd….

Gián tiếp: S + asked + O + if/

whether + S + V-lùi thì…

VD: “Do you go to school?” he said.

→ He asked me whether/ if I went to school.

+Dạng động từ khuyết thiếu:

Trực tiếp: Can/ shall/ will+ S + V-nd….?

Gián tiếp: S + asked + O + if/

whether + S + could/ should/ would + V- nd…

VD: Mary said to Nam, “Can you

2-Dạng câu trực tiếp là câu hỏi có từ để hỏi: (Wh-questions)

*Cách chuyển:

-Đổi said → asked (hoặc wanted to know/

wondered) sau đó thêm tân ngữ (nếu cần thiết).

-Bỏ dấu ngoặc kép, dấu phẩy và dấu hỏi.

-Đặt từ hỏi wh lên trước chủ ngữ của câu gián tiếp +động từ lùi thì.

-Đổi ngôi, đổi từ chỉ thời gian và nơi chốn(nếu cần thiết).

*Công thức:

Trực tiếp: Từ hỏi + do/ does/ did + S + V-nd….?

Gián tiếp: S + asked + O + từ hỏi + S + V-lùi thì…

VD: “Where do you live?” he said.

→ He asked me where I lived.

+Dạng động từ khuyết thiếu:

Trực tiếp: Từ hỏi + can/ shall/ will+ S + V-nd….?

Gián tiếp: S + asked + O + Từ hỏi + S + could/ should/ would + V-nd…

VD: Mary said to Nam, “How can you speak English?”

→ Mary asked Nam how he could speak English.

*Với TOBE:

VD1: “Are you a student?” She asked me.

→ She asked me if I was a student.

VD2: “Is she doing her homework?” Mary asked him.

→ Mary asked him if she was doing her homework.

VD3: “What are you doing?” Mai said to Hoa

→ Mai asked Hoa what she was doing.

Note:Nếu câu hỏi với will/ shall…diễn tả yêu cầu, lời mời, đề nghị có thể chuyển

sang câu gián tiếp dạng câu hỏi hoặc câu cầu khiến.

VD: He said, “Will you open the door?”

→ He asked me to open the door. (He asked me If I would open the door)

* Practice:

Exercise 1: The following are some more questions both Mrs. Smith and Nam asked. Report the questions for Nam,

but this time you need to use if or whether:

1. “ Is there a phone?”

→ I asked her………

2. “Do you have many friends?”
