I. Định nghĩa
- Trong tiếng Anh, việc chia động từ chính xác hay khơng cịn phụ thuộc hồn tồn vào dạng thức của Chủ ngữ. Bên cạnh việc chia động từ theo các thì, chúng ta cịn có nhiều dạng chủ nghữ phức tạp hơn khiến và chúng ta dễ bị đánh lừa khi thi làm bài thi.
II. Các quy tắc cần nhớ
➤ Quy tắc 1: 2 chủ ngữ số ít nối với nhau bởi “or” hoặc “nor” sẽ đi với động từ số ít. e.g. My aunt or my uncle is arriving by train today.
➤ Quy tắc 2: chủ ngữ số ít nối với chủ ngữ số nhiều bởi “or” hoặc “nor”, động từ sẽ chia với chủ ngữ gần nhất.
e.g. The serving bowl or the plates go on that shelf
➤ Quy tắc 3: Công thức “either…or” và “neither…nor”, động từ sẽ chia với chủ ngữ đứng gần nó nhất.
e.g. Either Pete or John is helping today with stage decorations Neither Pete or his friends are available today.
➤ Quy tắc 4: Trong trường hợp chủ ngữ bị chia tách bởi những từ như: along with, as well as, besides, chúng ta bỏ qua những từ trên và chia với chủ ngữ chính của câu.
e.g. The politician, along with the newsmen, is expected to arrive soon
➤ Quy tắc 5: Chủ ngữ bắt đầy bằng các đại từ each, everyone, everybody, anyone, anybody, someone, somebody đi với động từ số ít.
e.g. Each of the girls dances beautifully
➤ Quy tắc 6: Với những chủ ngữ chỉ phân số, phần trăm, majority, some, all, none – chúng ta dựa vào danh từ sau giới từ “of” để xác định cách chia động từ cho đúng.
e.g. Fifty percent of the pie has disappeared. Fifty percent of the pies have disappeared. One-third of the city is unemployed.
One-third of the people are unemployed.
➤ Quy tắc 7: Cụm từ “the number” theo sau là động từ số ít và cụm từ “a number” theo sau là động từ số nhiều.
e.g. The number of people we need to hire is thirteen. A number of people have written in about this subject.
➤ Quy tắc 8: Khi “either” và “neither” là chủ ngữ, chúng ln đi với động từ số ít. e.g. Neither of them is available to speak right now.
Either of us is capable of doing the job.
➤ Quy tắc 9: Sử dụng động từ số ít với cụm từ chỉ tiền và thời gian. e.g. Ten dollars is a too high to pay

III. Một số trường hợp đặc biệt
- Cấu trúc “That + S + V/ The fact that + S + V” làm chủ ngữ thì sẽ đóng vai trị như danh từ số ít.
e.g. [That he went bankcrupt] was unbelievable.
- Cấu trúc “Wh-word to V/ Wh-word S V/ Wh-word V” làm chủ ngữ đóng vai trị như danh từ số ít.
e.g. [How to use the device] is a mystery. [What he is saying] is true.
[Who often does volunteer work] is worthy of being praised.
- Một số N có dạng số nhiều nhưng lại là số ít: Physics, Mathematics, Economics, Mumps, Measles.
e.g. Mumps doesn’t pose a threat to man any more.
