THE đợc dùng trớc danh từ số ít, số nhiều, đếm đợc, không đếm đợc và tất cả các giống. The boy/ boys , the girl/ girls The books/ the money The son/ daughter B. Cách dùng: THE đợc dùng:
1/ Khi vật thể hay nhóm vật thể đợc xem là duy nhất.
The earth the sky the equator the moon the sun the star The moon goes around the earth.
If you look at the sky on a clear night, you will see that there are so many twinkling lights. It is very hot near the equator.
2/ Trớc một danh từ mà nó đã nên xác định khi đề cập đến lần thứ hai.
His car struck a tree, you can still see the mark on the tree.
I bought a dictionary and a grammar book yesterday. The dictionary was more expensive the grammar book.
I saw a man and a woman walking on the pavement on my way here. The man was tall and thin but the woman was short and fat.
3/ Trớc một danh từ đã đớc xác định khi ngời nói và ngời nghe đều đã biết về danh từ này.
Could you pass the salt, please? Where’s he? He is in the living room.
He was accused of stealing the money. Could you show me the way to the theatre?
Have you repaired the car yet? All the students are in the classroom.
It’s time for the children to go to bed.
4/ Trớc một danh từ đợc xác định bằng một cụm từ hay một mệnh đề.
The girl in blue is my daughter. The book on the table is mine. The man from London is a businessman.
5/ Trớc các số thứ tự first, second, third…….. same, last, only….
“ Hello” is the first unit in this book.
He is the second person to leave the meeting. He and I are at the same age.
She is the only person to understand what I say.
6/ Trớc cấp so sánh hơn nhất của tính từ hay trạng từ.
This is the most interesting film I have ever seen.
Of all the languages in the world, English is the most international. Which of the animals is the tallest?
Notes: My dog is the prettier of the two. The more I learn English, the more I like it.
7/ Trớc một tính từ tợng trng cho một nhóm ngời, nó luôn mang nghĩa số nhiều và luôn đi kèm với động từ số nhiều.
The poor ( = poor people), The rich ( = rich people), The English ( = English people), The sick ( = sick people) , The disabled ( = disabled people), ……
The German are more economical than the English. If I were rich, I would help the homeless.
In some European countries, the unemployed get the dole. The blind can’t see anything.
The rich should help the poor.
8/ Trớc các danh từ chỉ nhạc cụ.

9/ Trớc một danh từ số ít tợng trng cho một loài động vật hay một loại đồ vật.
The tiger is now in danger of extinction. ( = Tigers are now in danger of extinction) The dolphin is very intelligent.

10/ Trớc một số danh từ riêng chỉ biển, sông, quần đảo, dãy núi, những tên gọi số nhiều của các n- ớc, sa mạc, miền.

11/ Trớc tên các ban nhạc, đội hợp sớng, tên gọi các tờ báo:
The Philadenphia Orchestra, The Beatles, The ABBA, the Times ( Thời báo)
12/ Trớc một thành tựu về khoa học.

13/ Trong cách thành ngữ quy định.

16/ Trớc prison, hospital, court ( Toà án) , church, school/ college/university, bed ta có thể dùng hoặc không dùng THE:
a/ Không dùng THE khi nói đến mục đích riêng biệt.
My mother is a church-goer. She goes to church twice a month. He was sent to prison for theft.
The victims had been taken to hospital before the police came. It is 10 o’clock but she is still in bed.
b/ Dùng THE khi nói đén sự thăm viếng hay các mục đích khác.
He sometimes goes to the prison to give lectures.
My mother went to the school to meet my form teacher.
We went to the hospital to visit a friend who had been ill for a long time. * Các trờng hợp không dùng THE:
1. Trớc danh từ + số đếm : room 15, lesson 20, gate two...
2. Trớc các môn thể thao. football, tennist, basketball. baseball, volleyball, badminton, table- tennis/ping-pong
