COMPLEX SENTENCES (CÂU PHỨC)

KHÁI NIỆM

Câu phức là câu được dùng để miêu tả một hay nhiều sự vật, hiện tượng và thường gồm có nhiều hơn một động từ trong câu.

Chính vì vậy câu phức thường chứa một mệnh đề phụ thuộc và ít nhất một mệnh đề độc lập. Trong đó các mệnh đề được nối với nhau bởi các liên từ phụ thuộc như which, who,

although, despite, if, since, vv... Hầu hết những câu chúng ta dùng trong những bài viết hoặc bài phát biểu dài là câu phức.

VÍ DỤ

My daughter, who was late for class, arrived shortly after the bell rang. That's the man who bought our house.

Although it was difficult, the class passed the test with excellent marks.

Câu phức là loại câu khác biệt hẳn so với những loại câu còn lại bởi chúng giúp người đọc nhận rõ trong câu ý nào là quan trọng nhất. Khi các bạn viết:

"My friend invited me to a party. I do not want to go." (2 câu đơn) hoặc một câu ghép:

"My friend invited me to a party, but I do not want to go."

bạn sẽ khiến người đọc gặp rắc rối trong việc nhận biết phần thông tin nào là quan trọng đối với bạn.

Tuy nhiên nếu bạn thêm liên từ "although" vào vế đầu tiên để biến câu đó thành câu phức:

"Although my friend invited me to a party, but I do not want to go."

người đọc có thể dễ dàng nhận biết rằng việc bạn được mời không quan trọng bằng việc bạn không muốn đi.

Bài tập thực hành 2: Trong số những câu dưới đây, các bạn hãy cho biết câu nào là câu ghép, câu nào là câu phức. Nếu là câu ghép bạn hãy điền chữ CG vào ô bên phải còn nếu là câu phức bạn hãy điền chữ CP.
