Andatonceanewthoughtcame:Ifthisland isnotnowvaluableasaresidencesite,certainlythereareotheruses forit;andsinceGodknowsalluses,the ideaofanotherusewillcometome. Second,heidealizedthechangesinitsconditionatdifferentseasonsof theyearand-hurrah-anothernew thoughthehadnotthoughtbefore:Sincethelandwasinahollowandthe moistureofthesurroundingland an“illusionofthemind,”youcould-knowingthecertaintyofthelaw thatonlylikeperceiveslike-smileto yourselfovertheideathatnothingbutanillusionarymindcould conceiveanillusionaryworld,eatillusionary vegetables,wearillusionaryshirts,handleillusionarymoney,useand dependupontenthousandillusionary thingsandliveuponanillusionaryearth. Iholdthatmatterisexistentandthatitisveryunwiseanddetrimental todenyitsexistenceandattempttoliveup tothedenial,-forinstancetodenytheexistenceofmaterialfoodand trytolivewithoutit.But,Iholdalsothatit islackofknowledgeofthetruenatureofmatterthatmakesusthinkof itasdense,solid,motionlessandlifeless. Ifinourgreaterknowledgeofmatterwefindthatitisonlyenergyin reality,thatitisnotrestrictedenergybut infiniteenergy,andthatitisofthesamesubstanceasspirit-thenour conceptofmatterbecomessolikeour conceptofthesubstanceofwhichidealsaremade,thatitispossible forustoperceivesomedefiniteconnection -arealrelation,perhapsasimilarity,perhapsevenaco-existence-of thesubstanceofeveryidealandthe substanceofeverymaterialreality. Withsuchknowledge-foundinnextsucceedingchapters-ourfaiththat idealscometrue,becausetheyareofthe samesubstanceasmatter,canbeandisjustified.Suchfaithwillfire anewouridealsanddesiresandimpelusto ceasenoeffortuntiltheybecomerealities;andwithknowledgeofthe processofattainment,weshallknowby experiencethatitisnotsodifficultasitonceseemed.Andyou, yourself,canmakeyouridealsbecomerealities. Faithisthesubstanceofthingshopedfor.Idealsarethesubstanceof thethingsthatare. WHATCOMPACTNESSOFMATTERGIVESTOYOURIDEALS CHAPTER3 Yourideasarealwayschangingandyouareeverchangingyourattitude regardingthem.Why?Theyhaveno form,nobodyofspiritualsubstance;beingwithoutbody,theyare notionsandverychangeablenotionsatthat. Butyouareloyaltoyourideals;youaresteadfastinyourallegianceto them.Why?Becausethereissomething fixedandrealaboutthem;theyaremadeofspiritualsubstance;theyare theactualbodiesofyourdesires;of paperswerefullofthenewsystemandhowtogetfromonepointto another.Atleastnineoutofeverytenofthe millionsofadultsinNewYorkmusthavereadthedirectionspreviousto theopening,althoughprobablynotone inahundredthousand-whentheyreadthedirectionsoverandoveragain -idealizedthenewroute,noridealized themselvesgoingaboutthecityortoandfromworkonit.TheResultof NotIdealizingtheProcessonthedayof theopening,intelligentmenandwomencrowdedandjammedeachother, wentwheretheydidnotwishtogo, evengotlost,thoughmanyofthemhadknownNewYorkalltheirlives. Theconfusionandjammingofthemob attwotransferstationsweresogreatthatscoresofwomenfainted,and manywereseriouslyhurt.Morethana millionpeoplelosttheirheads-morethanamillionwereconfusedfor weeks.Itwasnecessarytoclosethecrosstown subwayforamonthtopreventaccidents-actuallytopreventpeople killingthemselvesandeachother, becauseoftheirconfusedmobaction.Andallofthisconfusion,trouble, injuryanddelaycouldhavebeen preventedifeachofthesevenmillionpeoplewhousethesubwayshad spentbutfiveminutesprevioustoits openinginIdealizingtheProcessoftravelingonit. HowIIdealizedtheProcessinthisCase:Itookadescriptionofthe routesfromanewspaper;readitcarefully. ThenIquietlyvisualizedthenewroutes.Next,Iidealizedaction,- Idealizedmyselfusingthenewroutefrommy hometomyoffice,picturingmyselfonthecars,changingwherethe descriptionsaidchangesmustbemade; idealizingeverybitofthejourneytomyofficedoor.NextIidealized onetripafteranothertootherpartsofthe city,untilIhadmyselfmentallyusedeverynewandoldroute.After this,itwasimpossibletobeconfused; impossibletomakeamistakeinusingthesubway. Millionsofothersthoughtofthenewroutes,butcertainlyveryfew consciouslyidealizedthemselvestraveling onthem.YeteveryindividualinNewYorkcouldhavedoneitinfive minutesiftheyhadonlybeeninthehabit ofIdealizingtheProcessofDoingThings.Othershadideasofthenew route,ofwheretheywantedtogo,andof howtogetthere.Iturnedmyideas into ideals.Idealizingtheprocess ofdoingthething,includedmorethanthe re-seeingofthementalpictureofthenewroute.Ididmorethan visualizeit.Iput into itanelementofaction.I keptmy“clutch”insothatthepicturebecamemovement.Thatisalways essentialinattainingthatwhichyou desire. THEACTOFMAKINGTHEREALITYYOURS CHAPTER13 Thislastactivity-theactofmakingtherealityyours-comprisesthree steps: idealizingyourattitude; unifyingthesubstanceoftheidealWITHthesubstanceofthereal;and makingtheactualthingapartofyourpossessionsorplacingyourselfin theactualconditionsthatyouhave idealizedanddesired. Yourattituderelatestoyourself,toothers,toconditions,andtothe worldingeneral.Beginwithyourself. Consciouslyornot,youdotakesomekindofanattitudetowardyourself. Youmaythinkyourselfawormora god.Youarefreetotakeanyattitudetowardyourselfyoudesireto take;butthereisonlyoneattitudethatleads tosuccessanditistheidealizedattitude!Incompletethinkingin “ideas”makesyouseeyourselfasachildofsin, suffering,sorrow,weakness,mistakeandfailure.Thinkofyourselfas youare:asonofGod-idealizingtheend youdesire,theprocessbywhichyouattain,andtheattitudeyouhold towardyourself,others,conditions,andthe universeitself. Then,idealizeyourattitudetowardothers,"Thatwhichyeseekyeshall find."Ifyouthinkthatallmenaretrying tocrushyou,youwillbecrushed;first,becauseyourattitudecloses youreyestotheopportunitiesofferedyou; andsecond,becausesuchanattitudediscoversanddrawstoyouthosewho donothelpyou.Ifyouidealize othersaswillingtohelpyou,youdrawtoyoumenandwomenwhowilldo thesquarethingbyyouandhelpyou, -inthemyouwillfindhelpandajustreward.Thisidealizedattitude doesnotmakeyouatrustingsimpleton,for theidealizedattitudealsoidealizeswisdominknowingothers. Theidealizedattitudechangesalltheconditionsoflife.Inbusiness, itleadsustoexpectgoodresults,and, expectinggoodresults,weplanbetter.Whenweplanbetter,-thatis, in,amoreidealizedway-wegetbetter results.Idealizetheworldingeneral.Theuniversemustbegood.Ifit werenotgooditwouldgotopiecesover night,-forevildisruptsanddestroys.Goodattractsandunitesand holdstogether. Youcannotidealizeyourbusiness,yourprofessionandyourworkwithout conductingthewholeaffairasan idealizedservicethatinevitablywillforceyouridealstocometrue! YoumayidealizetheThingDesired, down.Oneacrossthetable,onebesideme.LaterIlearnedthatonewasa coaloperatorofIndiana,andtheother, -well,therestofthestoryconcernstheotherman. Onelookatthismantoldmehewasnotaso-called“manofideals,”- thatis,notinaccordwiththeordinaryuse oftheterm.Helookedveryprosperous;hewastalkative-menarealways morecommunicativeafterdinner, smokingagoodcigar,onatrainwithnothingelsetodo.Thismanisthe soap-dyekingoftheworld.Onlyafew yearsagoheandafriend,hiswifeandhisfriend'swife,startedin businessmakingsoap-dyes.Altogetherthey had$800.Todayeachofthemismorethanamillionaire.Theirsoap-dyes sellfortencentsapackage,yetthey doabusinessofmanyhundredthousanddollarsamonth.Theysecuredthe originalpatentandconsequently,in additiontotheprofitstheymakefromtheirownconcern,theyarepaid royaltiesbyallothersoap-dyecompanies. Howdidhedoit?Ihavesaidthatheisnotamanofideals.That statementisbothtrueandnottrue.Heisnota manofidealsofthePhariseekind,butheisamanwhoidealizesthe thingwithwhichheworks.Tohimthe soap-dyeisoneofthegreatinventionsoftheage.Hisfaceglowedashe toldaboutit;hiseyesshone. "Thinkwhatitmeans,"hesaid,"foreverywomanintheland-infact, allovertheworld,fornowwe'reselling soap-dyestoEurope,Australia,IndiaandJapan-tobeableintwo minutestochangethecolorofhershirtwaist, ofapieceoflace,oranylighttrimmingmerelybydippingitinour dye,withoutanyboiling,andwithout stainingherhands." Fromtheverybeginninghehadidealizedthethingheproduced.Hehad idealizedthesoapinordertoselectthe bestforthepurpose.Hehadidealizedthedyessoastoproducethemost usefuldye,themosteasilyandquickly useddye,-adyeneedingnoboiling,adyethatdoesnotstainthehands ofthoseusingit.Hehadidealizedthe chemicalsusedintheprocessofmakingthedye,and,ashetalkedofhow hehadbuiltupthebusiness,Isawthat hehadevenidealizedthekindofchemicalexperthewantedandhadthen searchedtheUnitedStatesuntilhe foundthemanthatfittedhisideal.Hehadidealizedjusticeandhad securedpatentrightsforhimselfandthose whohadworkedforhim. Hisprocessofidealizingthething-thesoap-dye-didnotstopwhenhe hadputagoodproductonthemarketand whenthatproducthadearnedhimmillionsofdollars.Hetoldmehowthat veryafternoonhehadspentthree hourswithJapanesegirlsinNewYorktoprovehissoap-dyeswouldnot stainthehandsoftheJapanesewomen. GivingaBodyofEthericSubstancetoYourIdeal; GivingYourIdealtheImpulseofActiontoMakeItReal; TheProcessthatMakesIdealsComeTrue; TheActofMakingtheRealityYours;and WheretoCenterYourEffort. TOATTAINYOURDESIRES,ALLTHREEMUSTBEUSED CHAPTER7 Ifyouidealizeanduseallthreeofthebasicactivitiesandonlythose three,itiseasytomakeyouridealsbecome realities.Youalwaysattainwhenyouidealizeandusethem;but,ifyou leaveoutanyoneofthethree,youfailto attainyourdesire,-andnoonecanbeblamedexceptyourself. Ifyouidealizeonlythatwhichyoudesireandholdfaithfullytothat ideal,-thatis,ifyouuseonlythefirstofthe threeactivities,-youwillsucceedandjustlyinproportiontowhatyou do. SinceGodisjustice,theresultcorrespondstotheeffort.Idealizing whatyouwantandholdingfaithfullytothe idealformonthsandevenyearsbringsyouthesuccessyoureffortmerits -evenafteryearsyouwillstillbe holdingtotheideal. And,ifyouidealizethatwhichyoudesireandattempttotakepossession ofitmentally-usingthefirstandthird ofthethreebasicactivities-yousucceedandjustlyinproportionto whatyoudo. If,wheninNewYork,youlearnofafootballgametobeplayedinBoston anddesiretobepresent,theidealof theThingDesiredistobeinBoston.Ifyoudesiretodriveby automobilefromNewYorktoBoston,thatisthe idealoftheProcessyouintendtousetogettoBoston.Ifyougoto yourgarageandsitinyourcarforaday,a monthorayear,holdingfaithfullyallthetimetotheThingDesiredand holdingalsoamentalpictureofbeingin Boston-mentallypicturingthefirstandthirdsteps,butomittingthe secondone-beforetheyearpassesyour friendswillwishtosendyoutothemadhouse;andonlybecauseyou failedtousethesecondactivity-thatofthe processofactuallystartingthemachineanddrivingfromNewYorkto Boston. Asthelegfromkneetotoeswasasstiffasacarvedpieceofwood,it wasnecessarytouseacaneoracrutchand tohunchmywholebodyupwardinordertoswingtheotherlegforward. Today,Icanmovetheleftfootupand downattheankleaseasilyasIcanmovemyrightfoot.Idonoteven limp!Mystepisspringyandcertain. Friendssaythatmywalkismorelikethatofamanofthirtythanthat ofamanofsixty-five.Certainly,-withthe smallbonesofmyanklegrowntogetherasonesolidbone,-Iwas compelledtodosomethingwithmy consciousnessofthe“solidity”ofmatter. TogetridoftheideathatmatterisCOMPACT,DENSEandSOLIDisthe firststepinallhealing.Solongas youthinkofacancer-oratumor,oranabnormalbonegrowth-ascompact solidmatter,solongwillyoudoubt thepowerofmindandspirittochangeit.Throughoutalltheages, individualshavebeenhealedbyprayer,faith, mind,loveandspirit.Eachsuchcaseprovesitcanbedone.Yettoday, notonepersonofeachtwentymillionof theworld'spopulationishealeddirectlybysuchmethods.Wecannot accountforthis,byassertingthattheworld doesnotknowthatGodhashealed.Wecannotaccountforitbyasserting thatmillionsdonotwishtobemade wellbyspiritualhealing.If,atanytimeduringtheages,wehadheld tothetruththatGodisAllandknownthat matterisspiritualmanifestation,theknowledgeoftheresultsofour spiritualhealingwouldhavesweptthe worldandeveryonewouldnowacceptandusethem. WehaveidealsofGod,spirit,andspiritualhealing.Wehavenoidealof matter,thethingtobehealed.Our failureshavebeenduetoourpartialandverymistakenideasofmatter. Somehavetriedtogetaroundmatterby callingitanillusion.Thinkofmatterasanillusionasmuchasyou pleasebut-ifyouhaveacancerontheendof yournose-deepinyourheartyouknowthatyoucannotdenythatyour mindrecognizesthatthatcanceristhere! Solongasyoucallmatteranillusion,youadmitthereissomethingto becalledanillusion;andthatsomething makesyoudoubttoonedegreeoranotherthepossibilityofthehealing. Otherstrytogetaroundmatter,by denyingitsexistence.Solongasyoufinditnecessarytodenymatter, yourverydenialisyouradmissionthat thereissomethingtodeny.Isitconsistenttodenytheexistenceofthe matterwecallacancerandthento turn ourmindstopsy-turvyinasecondanddemandthatuniversalsupplybe manifestedasmatterintheformof moneyandmeansofmaterialexistence-food,clothing,houses,etc. ... Whenthedegreeofattractiveforceiscomparativelygreat,wesaythe matterishardandsolid.Whenitis smaller,wesaythematterisnothardandnotsosolid.Butitisnot matteritselfthatissolidornotsolid.Intruth, solidityisbutthespiritofmatter.Itisanothermanifestation-the infiniteattractiveenergyfoundthroughoutthe universe.ItisasinfiniteasGod.Matterisnotsolid!Thereisonly onesolidthingintheuniverse-theinfinite attractiveenergyofGodwhichholdsallthingstogether.Youridealsare ofspirit.Ifyouwishtochangeanypart ofyourbody,knowthatitisnomoresolidthantheheavens;knowthat thatwhichmakesitappearsolidand holdsthetinycentersofforcetogether,isbutinfiniteattractive spirit;thatthisattractivespiritorenergyisof Godandisinfinite. Yoursoul-withitsmind,loveandlifeforces,isalsoofGod.Being directofGod,madeinHisImage,youare supreme.Beingsupreme,yoursoulcontrolsitsidealsandtheir actualities.Donotdenyevil;thatwhichwecall evilexists,butwhenyouknowitsrealnatureyoufinditisgood.The solidity,whichyoufearedasanevil hindrancetothemanifestationofyourdesiresandideals,isinfinite attractivespirit,-theveryforcethatgives yourdesiresthepowertoattractallthatisnecessarytomakethemcome true. HavingreadthethreechaptersofthesectionentitledTheSpiritof Matter,younowknowthatdenyingthatso- calledmatterisamanifestationofGodisthesameasdenyingthat infinityofspace,infiniteattractiveenergyand infiniteactivityareofGod.Inthosethreechaptersyoulearnedthat densityofmatterisbutGod'sinfinitespace, thatsolidityofmatterisbutGod'sinfiniteattractiveenergy,andthat matterisbutethericaliveness,infinite energyeverpresent. I,then,inSpiritualHealing,adhereinpracticetothetruththatGod isAllandusenotonlyGod'sSpiritualIdeal butGod'sSpiritualManifestationaswell-thatis,GodasAlland Everything! Takefirstacaseofhealingthathastodowiththatwhichismost difficulttohandle-thechangingofbone structure.WhenIwasthreeyearsoldmyleftfootandanklewerecrushed betweentherollersofaone-horse sugarmill.Thefootandtheleg-halfwaytotheknee-weresobadly injuredthat,whentherollerswerereversed, itwasnecessarytolaymesidewiseonaboardtopreventthecrushed footfromdroppingoff.Thedoctors moldeditback into formasbesttheycouldandputit into acast.But theirregularbonesoftheanklewereso crushedandmashedthattheygrewtogetherasonesinglesolidbone.When thecastwastakenoff,Icouldnot movetheankleatall;Icouldnotflexitanymorethanyoucanbendthe boneofyourarmhalfwaybetween elbowandshoulder. statementregardingtheirpoliciesormethodstothepublic.Hefailedto idealizethetruththatmenarebound togetherinasocialstructureandconsequently,separatinghimselffrom others,hefailedtowinthetrustand goodwillofmankind. Ideas,thoughtscomposedofideas,andplansmadeupofsuchthoughts seldombecomerealities.Butoncethe smallestorthelargestthingisidealized,thesoul,whichconceivesthe ideal,cannotrestuntiltheidealhas becomeanactuality.Ifyouwouldhaveyourdesiresforabundance fulfilled,idealizethemandtheprocessof obtainingthem,andabundancecannotbekeptfromyou. BUILDINGUPASUCCESSFULBUSINESS CHAPTER17 Inbusinessyoufailinsomethingsandsucceedinothers.Youareoften failingandsucceedingatthesametime, -failingtomakeonepartofyourbusinesssuccessfulandsucceedingin makinganotherpartincreaseandpay. Thefailuresareduetotheideasheld;thesuccesses,totheideals.If youidealizetheentireprocessofyour businessyouwillnotonlyavoidfailuresandpartialfailures,butwill thinkofpossibilitiesneverthoughtof before,theveryonesthatwillleadyoutosucceed.Toillustrate,I shalluseasimplecase,-oneofthesimplest thatevercametome,yetoneofthemostinteresting,andone,the successofwhich,gavemeasmuchjoyasthe successofmanyso-calledbigaffairs.Inthisinstancetherewasawoman inthecase,andit'sherstoryIshalltell. TheWoman:Awidowwithfourchildren;shethenlivedinasuburbof Chicago;herhusbandhaddiedthree monthsbefore;shewasleftasproprietorofasmallgroceryand delicatessenstore. TheConditions:Asthehusbandhadbeenillthreemonthsbeforehis death,savingshadbeenusedindoctorbills, hospitalbillsandfuneralexpenses.Thoughthestorewasalittle affair,ithadhadagoodbusinessinthissection ofthewealthysuburbsolongasithadbeentheonlystorethere.But, aboutthetimeofthehusband'sdeath,one ofthoselargecompaniesthatestablishbranchstoresalloveragreat citybuiltawhite-tiled,plate-glass,two- storybuildingonthecorneroppositeherlittleshop.Itcutdownthe businessofthelittlestoresomuchthatthe womanwasunableeventomakealivingforherselfandherchildren.
