Takefirstacaseofhealingthathas to dowiththatwhichismost
difficult to handle-thechangingofbone
structure.WhenIwasthreeyearsoldmyleftfoot and anklewerecrushed
betweentherollersofaone-horse

BUILDINGUPASUCCESSFULBUSINESS

In businessyoufail in somethings and succeed in others.Youareoften
failing and succeedingatthesame time,
-failing to makeonepartofyourbusinesssuccessful and succeeding in
makinganotherpartincrease and pay.
Thefailuresaredue to theideasheld;thesuccesses, to theideals.If
youidealizetheentireprocessofyour
businessyouwillnotonlyavoidfailures and partialfailures,butwill
thinkofpossibilitiesneverthoughtof
before,theveryonesthatwillleadyou to succeed. To illustrate,I
shalluseasimplecase,-oneofthesimplest
thatevercame to me,yetoneofthemostinteresting, and one,the
successofwhich,gavemeasmuchjoyasthe
successofmanyso-calledbigaffairs. In thisinstancetherewasawoman
in thecase, and it'sherstoryIshalltell.
TheWoman:Awidowwithfourchildren;shethenlived in asuburbof
Chicago;herhusbandhaddiedthree
monthsbefore;shewasleftasproprietorofasmallgrocery and
delicatessenstore.
TheConditions:Asthehusbandhadbeenillthreemonthsbeforehis
death,savingshadbeenused in doctorbills,
hospitalbills and funeralexpenses.Thoughthestorewasalittle
affair,ithadhadagoodbusiness in thissection
ofthewealthysuburbsolongasithadbeentheonlystorethere.But,
aboutthe time ofthehusband'sdeath,one
ofthoselargecompaniesthatestablishbranchstoresalloveragreat
citybuiltawhite-tiled,plate-glass,two-
storybuildingonthecorneroppositeherlittleshop.Itcutdownthe

Itisnotenough to holdidealsoftheThingDesired,-thefirststep.It
isnotsufficient and itmaybedangerous to
declarementallythatyoupossessit,-thethirdstep.Itisnotenough
even to havefaiththatyourdesirewillcome
true,thoughfaithisthesubstanceofthingshopedfor.Youmustput
youridealsintoidealizedactionforideals
arethesubstanceofthingsthatare and idealizedactionistheonly
certainprocessofattainment.

senses,thesenseofsight.Idealization

mentalclutchofconnectinguptheidealofthethingdesiredwiththe

anyidealcometrue.

Thus,byactualpractice,youprovethatallvalueisofmind and thus

Ofcourse,youcannotimaginethis;itisinfinitelysmall-apartofthe
infinityofGod! And whatistheelectron?
Ofwhatsubstanceisit?Allscientistsagreethatitisaninfinitely
smallethericwhirlofenergy-awhirlinghole
in space!
Whatthenisdensity?Densityisthespiritofmatter-theinfinite
ethericenergy-spaceofGod.Itisthat in which
allthingslive and move and havetheirbeing.Itexistsbetweenthe
infinitelysmallwhirlingelectronsbuta
billionthofaninchfromoneanother;itexistsbetweenwhirlingstars
and infinitelylargesunsthousandsof
millionsofmillionsofmilesapart.
Thereisnodensityofmatter to hinderthemanifestationofyourideals
and desires.Sinceyou,yourideals and
desiresareofGod, and sincethecellsofyourbody and alsothe
substanceofallothermaterialactualitiesarebut
theinfiniteenergy-spaceofGod,certainlyyouridealscomposedofthis
substance-theonlysubstancethatexists
-can and will and docometrue. In fact,thisethericenergy-space
substance,whichmakesmatterseem to be
dense,istheverysubstancethatgivesbodies to yourideals and thus
makesthemmanifest in materialactuality.
WHATATTRACTIVEMATTEROFENERGYGIVES TO YOURDESIRES

Anotherstone in thepathoffaith and theattainmentofyourideals and
desiresistheideathatmatterissolid.As
densitywasfound to bebutinfiniteenergyspace-thespiritual
substance in whichideals and allthingsexistwhat
willsolidityturnout to bewhenyoucome to knowitasitis?
Ironseems to beasolidsubstance and veryhard.Doesitshardness
reside in matterorisitdue to thespiritor
energyofmatter?Themolecules and atomsofironarenoharderormore
solidthanthemolecules and atomsof
butter.Yet,itisdifficult to driveanailintoapieceofiron and
easy to driveoneintoachunkofbutter.That
whichmakesitdifficult to driveanailintoironisthedegreeof
attractiveforceexistingbetweentheparticles.It
isthisforcethatholdsmolecules and theirrespectiveatoms to each
other.Whenyoudriveanailintoiron,what
youovercomeistheattractiveforcethattries to preventthemolecules
beingpushedapart.Itiseasy to force
apartthemoleculesofbutter to makespaceforanail. In thiscase

lakehasbeenpurchasedbymillionairesfrom
Philadelphia and NewYork. In fact,since1919theyhavespent$3,000,000
in generalimprovementofthis
millionaires'colony in addition to themoneyspentonindividual
estates.
Thelandofthetwonephews,however,wasnotofgreatvalue.Theacreage
wasnotlargeenoughforagreat
estate and thelandwasnotgoodasfarmland. In nosensediditlead
surroundingland in value.Thosewhoknew
thelandthoughtitought to beworth$200anacre,but,asthemonths
wentby,itwasnotsold.Thenephews
wereanxious to realizeontheirland;theywished to gointobusiness,
and knowingme,theycalledoneday to
askforhelp.Iidealizeditasfarmland and sawitsuselessness. In
fact,ithadbeenneglectedsolongthatitwould
taketwoorthreeyears to bringitback to normalcondition.ThenI
idealizeditasasiteforacountryestateofa

millionairesaboutit;Iidealizeditsnearness to NewYork and
Philadelphia;Iidealizedthepeople in thecity
whodesiredhomes;Iidealizedhumannature,realizingthattherewere
manyculturedpeopleoflimitedmeans
whodesired to livenearverywealthypeoplewhowouldenjoylife in a
communityofsuchpeople.
Consequentlyoutofthecosmostherecame to mymindtheidealofmaking
thislandalittleparkdividedinto
fortylittlehomeplotsofoneacreeach.Thenephews and myselfdrewup
thisplan.Wehadgivenaddedvalue to
Think,think,thinkofwishes and youwillliveanervouswreck and die
in thementalmadhouseofunfulfilled
mentaldesires.Feedthedesiresofyouridealswithyourownfeelings

OBTAINING IN REALITYTHEIDEALPOSITIONYOUDESIRE

GodisAll and Everything-beverysureofthat.Heiseverythingthat
exists,notonly in themental and spiritual
world,buteverythingthatreallyexists in thematerialworld.
Ifyouthink and plan in ideas and act in accordwiththem,becertain

heartbeatsofsoul;theydemand and

divinelycreatesit in reality.
Putthefollowingtruthstogether:Desireistheheartofyourideal; in

unlesstheythusburnwiththelightofhope and thefireofaction,your
idealwillnotcometrue.Whenthefires
ofdesirearedimmedbydisappointmentsordiscouragement,ormemoriesof
thefailuresofthepast,whatare
yougoing to doaboutit?Feedthefireswithyourfeelings and emotions!
Yourthoughtswillnotdo;theyarebut
dampwood and wetsand.Desiresareoftheheart;theycannotbemade to
burnbrightlybyaddingideas and
thoughtsofthemind.
Isitathing-amaterialthing-youhavedesired and forwhichdesire
burnslowbecauseofpastfailures to attainit,
orisitanewdesirethatdaresnotburnbrightlyforfearof
disappointmentshoulditnotbeattained?Fireyour
mayfallthrough.
Ifyouidealizethevalueofthatwhichyouwish to sell,yougiveit
additionalsellingvalue.Ifyouidealizethe
processofsellingit,youdiscovernewmeansofselling.Ifyouidealize
allkindsofpossiblebuyersofthatwhich
youhaveforsale,youdiscoverabuyercapableofperceivingthe

CauseforRefusal:Thelandwas in ahollow;realestatemen and bankers
wereconvincednoonewouldbuyit
untileveryotherresidencesitenearithadbeensold;thatmightbe
yearshence.
TheOwner'sFirstEfforts:When,attheendofthefirstthreemonths,
theboomfailed to boom,herecognized
abundantsupply, and faithfully and persistently and confidentlyaffirmed
“GodISALLAbundance” and “Allis
God.”
Threemonthswentby.Themoneydidnotdropfromtheheaven;but
somethingelsedropped-thecornersofhis
banker'smouth.Whatwasthetrouble?Faithfully and confidentlythe
owneraffirmedthetruth:“GodIsthe
SourceofAbundantSupply.”Whythenthefailure?BecauseGodisSpirit;
and consequentlyaslongashe
continuedmerely to affirmGodasAbundantSupply,-thesupplycontinued
in aspiritualstate.Thisthebankers
refused to cash;theywantedcertifiedchecks.Afterafailureofmore
thantwo and ahalfmonths,theownertried
IdealizingtheProcess.First,heidealizedtheland in allitsdetails.
And atonceanewthoughtcame:Ifthisland
isnotnowvaluableasaresidencesite,certainlythereareotheruses
forit; and sinceGodknowsalluses,the
ideaofanotherusewillcome to me.
Second,heidealizedthechanges in itsconditionatdifferentseasonsof
theyear and -hurrah-anothernew
thoughthehadnotthoughtbefore:Sincethelandwas in ahollow and the
moistureofthesurroundingland
an“illusionofthemind,”youcould-knowingthecertaintyofthelaw
thatonlylikeperceiveslike-smile to
yourselfovertheideathatnothingbutanillusionarymindcould
conceiveanillusionaryworld,eatillusionary
vegetables,wearillusionaryshirts,handleillusionarymoney,use and
dependupontenthousandillusionary
things and liveuponanillusionaryearth.
Iholdthatmatterisexistent and thatitisveryunwise and detrimental
to denyitsexistence and attempt to liveup
to thedenial,-forinstance to denytheexistenceofmaterialfood and
try to livewithoutit.But,Iholdalsothatit
islackofknowledgeofthetruenatureofmatterthatmakesusthinkof
itasdense,solid,motionless and lifeless.
If in ourgreaterknowledgeofmatterwefindthatitisonlyenergy in
reality,thatitisnotrestrictedenergybut
infiniteenergy, and thatitisofthesamesubstanceasspirit-thenour
conceptofmatterbecomessolikeour
conceptofthesubstanceofwhichidealsaremade,thatitispossible
forus to perceivesomedefiniteconnection
-arealrelation,perhapsasimilarity,perhapsevenaco-existence-of
thesubstanceofeveryideal and the
substanceofeverymaterialreality.
Withsuchknowledge-found in nextsucceedingchapters-ourfaiththat
idealscometrue,becausetheyareofthe
samesubstanceasmatter,canbe and isjustified.Suchfaithwillfire
anewourideals and desires and impelus to
ceasenoeffortuntiltheybecomerealities; and withknowledgeofthe
processofattainment,weshallknowby
experiencethatitisnotsodifficultasitonceseemed. And you,
yourself,canmakeyouridealsbecomerealities.
Faithisthesubstanceofthingshopedfor.Idealsarethesubstanceof
thethingsthatare.
WHATCOMPACTNESSOFMATTERGIVES TO YOURIDEALS

Yourideasarealwayschanging and youareeverchangingyourattitude
regardingthem.Why?Theyhaveno
form,nobodyofspiritualsubstance;beingwithoutbody,theyare
notions and verychangeablenotionsatthat.
Butyouareloyal to yourideals;youaresteadfast in yourallegiance to
them.Why?Becausethereissomething
fixed and realaboutthem;theyaremadeofspiritualsubstance;theyare
theactualbodiesofyourdesires;of
paperswerefullofthenewsystem and how to getfromonepoint to
another.Atleastnineoutofeverytenofthe
millionsofadults in NewYorkmusthavereadthedirectionsprevious to
theopening,althoughprobablynotone
in ahundredthousand-whentheyreadthedirectionsover and overagain
-idealizedthenewroute,noridealized
themselvesgoingaboutthecityor to and fromworkonit.TheResultof
NotIdealizingtheProcessonthedayof
theopening,intelligentmen and womencrowded and jammedeachother,
wentwheretheydidnotwish to go,

Theconfusion and jammingofthemob
attwotransferstationsweresogreatthatscoresofwomenfainted, and
manywereseriouslyhurt.Morethana
millionpeoplelosttheirheads-morethanamillionwereconfusedfor
weeks.Itwasnecessary to closethecrosstown
subwayforamonth to preventaccidents-actually to preventpeople
killingthemselves and eachother,
becauseoftheirconfusedmobaction. And allofthisconfusion,trouble,
injury and delaycouldhavebeen
preventedifeachofthesevenmillionpeoplewhousethesubwayshad

and second,becausesuchanattitudediscovers and draws to youthosewho

othersaswilling to helpyou,youdraw to youmen and womenwhowilldo
thesquarethingbyyou and helpyou,
-in themyouwillfindhelp and ajustreward.Thisidealizedattitude
doesnotmakeyouatrustingsimpleton,for
theidealizedattitudealsoidealizeswisdom in knowingothers.
Theidealizedattitudechangesalltheconditionsoflife. In business,
itleadsus to expectgoodresults, and,
expectinggoodresults,weplanbetter.Whenweplanbetter,-thatis,
in, amoreidealizedway-wegetbetter
results.Idealizetheworld in general.Theuniversemustbegood.Ifit
werenotgooditwouldgo to piecesover
night,-forevildisrupts and destroys.Goodattracts and unites and
holdstogether.
Youcannotidealizeyourbusiness,yourprofession and yourworkwithout
conductingthewholeaffairasan
idealizedservicethatinevitablywillforceyourideals to cometrue!
YoumayidealizetheThingDesired,
down.Oneacrossthetable,onebesideme.LaterIlearnedthatonewasa
coaloperatorofIndiana, and theother,
-well,therestofthestoryconcernstheotherman.
Onelookatthismantoldmehewasnotaso-called“manofideals,”-
thatis,not in accordwiththeordinaryuse
oftheterm.Helookedveryprosperous;hewastalkative-menarealways
morecommunicativeafterdinner,
smokingagoodcigar,onatrainwithnothingelse to do.Thismanisthe
soap-dyekingoftheworld.Onlyafew
yearsagohe and afriend,hiswife and hisfriend'swife,started in
businessmakingsoap-dyes.Altogetherthey
had$800.Todayeachofthemismorethanamillionaire.Theirsoap-dyes
sellfortencentsapackage,yetthey
doabusinessofmanyhundredthousanddollarsamonth.Theysecuredthe
originalpatent and consequently, in
addition to theprofitstheymakefromtheirownconcern,theyarepaid
royaltiesbyallothersoap-dyecompanies.
How didhedoit?Ihavesaidthatheisnotamanofideals.That
statementisbothtrue and nottrue.Heisnota
manofidealsofthePhariseekind,butheisamanwhoidealizesthe
thingwithwhichheworks. To himthe
soap-dyeisoneofthegreatinventionsoftheage.Hisfaceglowedashe
toldaboutit;hiseyesshone.
"Thinkwhatitmeans,"hesaid,"foreverywoman in theland -in fact,
allovertheworld,fornowwe'reselling
soap-dyes to Europe,Australia,India and Japan -to beable in two
minutes to changethecolorofhershirtwaist,
ofapieceoflace,oranylighttrimmingmerelybydippingit in our
dye,withoutanyboiling, and without
stainingherhands."
Fromtheverybeginninghehadidealizedthethingheproduced.Hehad

theworld'spopulationishealeddirectlybysuchmethods.Wecannot
accountforthis,byassertingthattheworld
doesnotknowthatGodhashealed.Wecannotaccountforitbyasserting
thatmillionsdonotwish to bemade
wellbyspiritualhealing.If,atany time duringtheages,wehadheld
to thetruththatGodisAll and knownthat
matterisspiritualmanifestation,theknowledgeoftheresultsofour
spiritualhealingwouldhavesweptthe
world and everyonewouldnowaccept and usethem.
WehaveidealsofGod,spirit, and spiritualhealing.Wehavenoidealof

Somehavetried to getaroundmatterby
callingitanillusion.Thinkofmatterasanillusionasmuchasyou

Solongasyoucallmatteranillusion,youadmitthereissomething to

Otherstry to getaroundmatter,by
denyingitsexistence.Solongasyoufinditnecessary to denymatter,
yourverydenialisyouradmissionthat
thereissomething to deny.Isitconsistent to denytheexistenceofthe
matterwecallacancer and then to turn
ourmindstopsy-turvy in asecond and demandthatuniversalsupplybe
manifestedasmatter in theformof
money and meansofmaterialexistence-food,clothing,houses,etc.
... Whenthedegreeofattractiveforceiscomparativelygreat,wesaythe
matterishard and solid.Whenitis
smaller,wesaythematterisnothard and notsosolid.Butitisnot
matteritselfthatissolidornotsolid. In truth,
solidityisbutthespiritofmatter.Itisanothermanifestation-the
infiniteattractiveenergyfoundthroughoutthe
universe.ItisasinfiniteasGod.Matterisnotsolid!Thereisonly
onesolidthing in theuniverse-theinfinite

Takefirstacaseofhealingthathas to dowiththatwhichismost

structure.WhenIwasthreeyearsoldmyleftfoot and anklewerecrushed

In businessyoufail in somethings and succeed in others.Youareoften
failing and succeedingatthesame time,
-failing to makeonepartofyourbusinesssuccessful and succeeding in
makinganotherpartincrease and pay.
Thefailuresaredue to theideasheld;thesuccesses, to theideals.If
youidealizetheentireprocessofyour
businessyouwillnotonlyavoidfailures and partialfailures,butwill
thinkofpossibilitiesneverthoughtof
before,theveryonesthatwillleadyou to succeed. To illustrate,I
shalluseasimplecase,-oneofthesimplest
thatevercame to me,yetoneofthemostinteresting, and one,the
successofwhich,gavemeasmuchjoyasthe
successofmanyso-calledbigaffairs. In thisinstancetherewasawoman
in thecase, and it'sherstoryIshalltell.
TheWoman:Awidowwithfourchildren;shethenlived in asuburbof
Chicago;herhusbandhaddiedthree
monthsbefore;shewasleftasproprietorofasmallgrocery and
delicatessenstore.
TheConditions:Asthehusbandhadbeenillthreemonthsbeforehis
death,savingshadbeenused in doctorbills,
hospitalbills and funeralexpenses.Thoughthestorewasalittle
affair,ithadhadagoodbusiness in thissection
ofthewealthysuburbsolongasithadbeentheonlystorethere.But,
aboutthe time ofthehusband'sdeath,one
ofthoselargecompaniesthatestablishbranchstoresalloveragreat
citybuiltawhite-tiled,plate-glass,two-
storybuildingonthecorneroppositeherlittleshop.Itcutdownthe
businessofthelittlestoresomuchthatthe

Itisnotenough to holdidealsoftheThingDesired,-thefirststep.It
isnotsufficient and itmaybedangerous to
declarementallythatyoupossessit,-thethirdstep.Itisnotenough
even to havefaiththatyourdesirewillcome
true,thoughfaithisthesubstanceofthingshopedfor.Youmustput
youridealsintoidealizedactionforideals
arethesubstanceofthingsthatare and idealizedactionistheonly
certainprocessofattainment.
