SOUTHERN LUZON STATE UNIVERSITY Republic of the Philippines THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY Socialist Republic of Vietnam DEM CANDIDATE: DO KHAC THANH ENHANCING MANAGEMENT MEASURES ON STUDENTS' SELF- STUDY ACTIVITIES AT HUNG VUONG UNIVERSITY, PHU THO, VIET NAM Specialty: Educational Management DISSERTATION SUMMARY OF EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT THAI NGUYEN, 2014 ii The study was done at: INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE STUDY PROGRAMS, THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY Scientific supervisor: The peer review 1: The peer review 2: The peer review 3: The dissertation is defended to the Panel of Experts at: Dissertation can be found at: - National Library Learning Resource Center, Thai Nguyen University - Library of International Training and Development Center - Library of Southern Luzon State University, Philippines PREFACE For the level of higher education, the requirements on methods in Article 40 of the Vietnamese Law on Education (2005) states: "Methods of college and university education must pay attention to the advancement of the self- consciousness in study, of ability of self- study, self-taught, developing creative thinking, drilling of practical skills, facilitate students in participating in research, experimentation and application" Hung Vuong University (HVU) was established on 29 April 2003 on the foundation of Phu Tho teachers Training College HVU has total staff of over 400 in which, there are 10 associate professors, 30 doctors, 80 masters and 110 teachers are taking PhD and Master degree coures The number of students in 2013 is 12000 Its goal is to become a university which educates and trains students in multy disciplines and branches, and serves as a research centre of science and technology, meeting the need of economic, cultural and social development in Phu Tho province and her neighbors Over the years the school has made great efforts in the training of human resources for Phu Tho province and the region, however with the increasing requirements on the qualification of human resources, the schools should have the synchronization solutions to improve the quality of training These solutions must be oriented to students - the subject of the training process From the above problems, the identification of measures to organize, manage study activities of students of Hung Vuong University in order to improve the quality of school education is a critical issue Chapter INTRODUCTION BACK GROUND OF THE STUDY Entering the twenty-first century, human beings have encountered drastic changes of modern civilization as the result of the achievements of science and technology created breakthroughs in all areas of social life Education is considered a key factor for the development of the society as required by that trend With the development of science and technology, the amount of human knowledge has been increased day by day, hour by hour while time for learning in the school is limited Therefore, being equipped with self-study method to acquire the knowledge is an inevitable trend Hung Vuong University (HVU) was established in 2003 on the foundation of Phu Tho Teachers Training College Its goal is to become a university where educates and trains students in multy disciplines and branches, and serves as a research centre of science and technology, meeting the need of economic, cultural and social development in Phu Tho province and surrounding provinces Over the past years, the university has made great efforts in training human resources for Phu Tho province and the region, due to the increasing requirements on the qualification of human resources, the university should have the synchronization solutions to improve the quality of training These solutions must be oriented to students - the subject of the training process In fact, most of the fresh students not have the habit of active and positive study, self- study skills but their study mainly relies on the knowledge imparted by college instructors In addition, factors such as physical facilities, textbooks and curricula for teaching and learning have many shortcomings affect the quality of school education From the above problems, the determination of method of organization and management on self-study activities of students of Hung Vuong University in order to improve the quality of school education is a critical issue With the above reasons, author chooses the topic: "Enhancing the management measures of students' self- study activities at Hung Vuong University" to propose management measures with the aim of improving the university’s quality of education OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY Determine the status of the self- study activities of students in terms of Students' awareness on self- study, study skills, self- study habits; services for self- study support, teacher initiatives, self- study location, and administrative work Find out the factors that may affect the activities of students' self- study both external factors and internal factors Find out the relationship between self- study activities and factors affecting the self- study activities Identify the different management measures on self-study activities in terms of planning, Organizing the orientation; Organizing management activities for self-learning skill enhancement; Managing the use of facilities and equipment for students’ self-study activities Assess the necessity and feasibility of the management measures on self-study activities Develop management measures of student's self- study activities based from its necessity and feasibility STUDY HYPOTHESIS There is no significant relationship between self- study activities and factors affecting such activities SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This study will be beneficial to objects listed as follows: Students They will be benefited by this study because they are the main concern of training process From the results of the study, students can recognize both strengths and weaknesses of situation on students' self-study activities in so that each student should clearly identify their motivation, attitude and self-study methods to achieve high academic results Lecturers The outcome of the study is of great help to lectures because they will be made aware of the factors affecting the activities of students' self- study Since then, each lecturer will take measures to raise awareness and self-study skills for students, making them more active and proactive in self-study activities Also , this study will help them identify measure to improve the efficiency of selflearning activities for students to contribute to improving the quality of school education Administrators It is hoped that the study will help the administrators to see the status of self-study activities, the management of self-study activities of the school, and provide them with the management measures used for reference in managing selfstudy activities of students in the university Future Researchers This study could provide references for future proponents who wish to conduct a study similar to the nature of this ongoing research Thus, basic management measures of selfstudy activities of students could be served as resources for other studies SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY This study was conducted at Hung Vuong University in Phu Tho province The respondents were composed of 206 administrators and 328 students from the different Faculties and Departments of Hung Vuong University The time frame of this study covers the period from December 2012 to November 2013 RESEARCH PARADIGM Output Orientation on self- study Input Process Focus on the activities related to selfstudy Management measures of self- study activities Chapter REVIEW OF LITERATURE AND STUDIES SELF-STUDY ACTIVITIES OF STUDENTS Self-study activities Many authors mentioned and approached self-study, our perspective self- study is a form of cognitive activity of individuals It is a voluntary activity, positive; self-promote their own internal resources to acquire knowledge, skills and techniques Self-study is a way of study in which people study with self-awareness, positively, proactively, independently to capture knowledge in a certain area of life in order to achieve their goals Characteristics of students' self- study activities For university students, self- study is a basic form of study It can be said that self-study is an activity of the subject (students) and selfstudy problems posing great significance, at the very time when we advocate: regular education, lifelong learning To complete the task of learners, students need to pay attention to the following issues: method of listening lecturer, reading textbooks, books, reference materials, and making their own plans of study MANAGEMENT OF SELF- STUDY ACTIVITIES Management of self- study is considered one of the important contents of the teaching process and management of the university Self-study activities is the system of impacts with purpose, plan, rules of management to all stages of the process of self-study, to help students fulfill their academic tasks The management of self-study activities is to ensure the conditions for positive self-study Characteristics of the management of students' self-study activities The management of self-study activities includes the subject and the object of management The subject of management is the department responsible for the impact on the learning process of students The objects of management in education are people who implement and receiving education and training process The nature of management of self-study activities The nature of management of self-study activities is the process of implementing series of functions including management functions from planning, implementing, directing and checking The goal of self-study activities management The highest goal of self-study activities management is to promote the quality of education, which also is to meet the requirements of society For that goal, the management measures need to be operated synchronously Content of the management on self-study activities Management on self-study activities is considered an important part of the school management It includes the following: Managing establishment and implementation of students’ self-study plan; Managing the content of students' self-study; Managing organization of self-study activities of students Management measures of self-study activities Management measures of self-study activities are the methods or the group of methods of administrator can influence the managed objects to achieve the management objectives Measures are to make the students active, positive, self-study and research in order to acquire and control knowledge Management measures for self-study are not invariant but they must be used flexibly depending on the situation, different objects in order to achieve optimal efficiency in management Factors affecting the self- study activities including external and internal factors External factors: including the State's policy on education; Training programs; Training requirements of industry; The appeal of the discipline; Teaching methods; The facilities cater for learning; Test, test and evaluation; Living conditions; The facilities of the training facility Internal factors: including: physical factors; Psychological factors; Methods of study; Study skills 10 Chi-square test, for determining the significant relationship of the self- study activities and the factors that may affect the students' self- study activities To see the correlation between the necessity and feasibility of the self-study activities management measures as mentioned, we use the formula coefficients' hierarchy Specimen to calculate Chapter RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS STATUS OF THE SELF- STUDY ACTIVITIES Result of self-study cognition activities on contents, weighted average result is 3.12, ie that students all are aware of the importance of the self-study Criteria number is 3.36 points, ie that students are aware of the benefits of the self-study at the highest level Evaluation results of the self-study impact on improving learning skills The weighted average result is 3.32, the skill that is assessed to be at highest point level is the 2nd skill – comprehension skills with the 3.4 weighted average points; the skill assessed to be the lowest point is the recording skill Assessment result on 07 habits in the self-study, the result of these 07 contents is 3.19 point, which is at credit level; the highest score is of the 7th content with 3.47 point, ie that the students have habits to prepare well the learning tools The most popular habit in the self-study is to review the class notes 11 Survey of services for the self-study support with 06 contents, the result of 06 contents is at 3.27 point, ie basically, service conditions for the self-study have met the needs of students In which, the library service is assessed to be at the highest level of 3.38, the media is at the lowest level with 3.17 This reflects correctly the reality of the university currently Assessment of the teacher initiative with 07 contents Average result is 3.31, ie the contents are highly appreciated and activities of teachers have great effect on the self-study of students Survey on the self-study location of students, the survey result shows that learning at home is the most popular choice with 3.63 average points, next is the self-study at silent places with 3.30 points General result is 2.77 points, ie that students not chose any fixed place Evaluation of the university management on the self-study activities with 06 contents, the average result of management content is 3.02 points, ie these contents are frequently carried out The st content gets the highest score with 3.2 points; it is the management on teaching activities of teachers to positively affect on the self-study of students The lowest score is of management on the self-study activities outside of class time with 2.8 points This fact is consistent with the actual situation of the university FACTORS AFFECTING SELF- STUDY ACTIVITIES External factor: 10 external actors are: policies related to teaching and learning; contents of training program, attraction of subject/course; training requirements; teaching method; physical facilities of the university; facilities for learning; learning environment; inspection and evaluation work; living condition The 12 results show all the 10 factors have effect on the self-study activities of students at different levels The most affected factor is teaching method at points of 3.45; the least affected factor is inspection and evaluation at points of 3.13 Internal factors: 10 internal factors are personal motivation, health, physical status, learning method, cognition capacity, personal adjustment, physical activities, research training, and management plan of the self-study Average result is 3.29, ie all 10 factors affect on the self-study activities at different levels The most affected factor is the personal motivation with 3.47 points; the least affected factor is the physical activities It means that the personal motivation play a significant role in the self-study activities of students, they themselves decide quality and result of the self-study SELF- STUDY MANAGEMENT MEASURES Planning management of the self-study activities The average result is 3.55 means that related divisions in the university set up plans at different levels The most popular is the university plan with 3.85 points; the lowest score is the Youth Union – Student Council with 3.29 points Organize orientation for the self-study activities The average result is 3.59 points; content of regulation dissemination with 3.84 points achieves the most frequency at beginning of the school year Organize management activities to improve the self-study skills The average point is 3.55, ie all 06 activities to improve the selfstudy skills have been done, among them management of teaching activities of teachers gets the highest point with 3.72 13 Manage and use facilities and infrastructure for the selfstudy activities Average result is 3.54 points, ie the university has paid attention to this work Ranking at the highest level is condition of lecture hall, classroom, which is minimum condition for the self-study with 3.72 points Propose management measure on the self-study activities Foundations to propose measures Missions of Hung Vuong University is to become a multilevel, multi-sector university, a high human resource training center, a scientific research and technology transference center meeting the need of the economic-cultural-social development of Phu Tho province and other provinces in the mountainous area of the northern Vietnam Therefore, the important task of the university is to train the human resource that has good qualities, good qualifications to meet the demand of the socio-economic development of local and the region Then, equipment for student knowledge, methods and skills for the self-study is a priority, at the same time the university must take positive action into the self-study process of students so that they can formulate methods and habits of the self-study Propose management methods of the self-study activities Measure Planning the management of self-study activities of students *Purpose – meanings of the measure Planning is one of the four functions of management For the selfstudy activities, the planning is an action program in which managers orient to the activities to improve the quality of university education 14 *Method of implementation On the basis of the master plan of the school year, divisions have responsibility to clearly specify into action program of their own divisions; on the basis of their functions, duties, they should actively construct their own plan that is suitable for reality of their division Measure Organizing activities to raise awareness and building attitude and self-study skills for students *Purpose – meanings of the measure Self-study activities will be effective when every student voluntarily develops their abilities and their own efforts This measure has a direct impact on student awareness through activities held by the university, divisions related to management of self-study activities of students * Method of implementation: + To organize activities to raise awareness, built up learning motivation, attitude for students + To educate and train the self-consciousness, activeness in study + To carry out emulation work well + To organize improvement, training the self-study skill for students Measure 3: Organizing the implementation of renovation in learner-centered teaching method in order to promote the selfstudy of students * Purpose – meanings of measure Renovation process of teaching method of teachers in order to create condition, environment, opportunity; guild, control students so that they can actively find out knowledge source, self-selection, self- 15 acquisition of knowledge and moreover self-decision of knowledge usage in dealing with learning duty and other matters in reality That learning process is called as self-learning – self-research and that teaching process is said as self-learning teaching This measure directly affects on teachers then indirectly affects on students * Method of implementation: + Raise awareness of importance of teaching method renovation for teachers and managers + Improve professional quality + Improve management of professional activities routine Measure Strengthening scientific research in the process of training to promote students' motivation in studying * Purpose – meanings of the measure: To create well conditions for students to creatively participate in the activity, to positively equip them independence, to improve knowledge and scientific cognition methods, to promote the lifelong self-study capacity, to form qualities of researchers among students This measure leaves a direct impact on students; through scientific research, students will be more passionate in the self-learning process * Method of implementation: + Raise awareness, attitude among students for scientific research + Define duties of students: + Duties of teachers: make students clear position, role, and importance of scientific research; to improve research skills and methods for students 16 + Organize training students every separate research skill, assign duties for student groups, or individuals to select research issue, formulate research outline + The university starts and organizes scientific research activities among students Measure Organizing and managing classroom activities and extra curriculum activities for students *Purpose – meanings of the measure - To make an environment for students to develop the selfdiscipline, initiative in learning - This measure has direct impact on students to formulate selfstudy awareness, self-management in and outside of classroom time * Contents of the measure: + Management of habit implementation in classroom sessions + Organization of classroom activities + Good management of self-study activities outside of classroom sessions * Implementation method: - Build up plans and follow classroom lecture according to the scheduled plans; instruct students the self-study, self-research; orient students matter resolution skill; introduce textbooks and reference materials - Organize students into group activities; - Teachers will play role of organizers, controller, and instructors for students during classroom learning process, they will be arbitrators during discussion of students; to answer students’ questions 17 - Organize activities for students to self-inspection, self- evaluation of their own learning results Since then, students will take measures to adjust their self-learning capacity - Construct self-management mode outside of classroom time for students under participation and consultancy of competent agencies, the university organizations Measures Managing and using efficiently facilities and equipment for students' self-study activities * Purpose – meanings of the measure Facilities and teaching equipment plays a very important role in the teaching-learning process in university, is an indispensable factor in determining the quality of teaching and learning To improve the university quality of the training, it is necessary to have the management, investment and utilization of facilities and teaching equipment This measure is an important condition, that affects, governs all the activities of teaching, learning and cultural, spiritual activities in the university * Implementation of the measure: - The university constructs the purchase and investment plan of facility at the beginning of school year basing on the proposal of the divisions - Set up Consultancy Team of facility purchase; correctly implement bidding process under regulations, ensuring quality of products and appropriate price - Hold training course, instruct teachers to use the facility, encourage teachers to use information technology in teaching Organize profession training for managers of the facilities 18 - Construct system of regulations, rules of management, utilization of teaching facilities and equipment: classroom, library, multi-purpose room, teaching facilities, etc - Keep regular maintenance, repair, and inspection of the facilities periodically Assay results Measure 1: Planning management of the self-study, necessity to evaluate average point X = 2.95, ranking 5th order; feasibility X = 2.87 ranks 5th order Measure 2: Organizing activities to raise awareness, building attitude and self-study skills training for students, necessity to evaluate average point X = 2.98 ranking 1st order; feasibility X = 2.96 ranking 2nd order Measure 3: Implement renovation of teaching method in order to develop the self-study activeness, necessity of evaluation X = 2.97 average point ranking 2nd order; feasibility X = 2.96 ranking 2nd order Measure 4: Strengthening scientific research activities to promote the self-study motivation, necessity of evaluation with average point of X = 2.97 ranking 2nd order; feasibility X = 2.97 ranking 1st order Measure 5: Organizing and managing extra curriculum activities of students, necessity of evaluation X = 2.97 average point ranking 2nd order; feasibility X = 2.91 ranking 3rd order Measure 6: Manage and use efficiently facilities for the self-study activities, necessity of evaluation X = 2.97 average point ranking 2nd order; feasibility X = 2.88 ranking 4th order In terms of necessity, ranking 1st order is the 1st measure with X = 2.98 average point; The measure of activity organization to enhance 19 awareness, to construct motivation, attitude and self-study skill for students is one, which directly affects on students In terms of feasibility, ranking 1st order is the 4th measure with X = 2.97 average point; the measure of scientific research activity increase to develop self-study motivation is a good method to arouse the independence, creativeness of learners In order to see correlation between the necessity and the feasibility of the management measures of the students' self- study activities, the author uses the ranking correlation coefficient formula of Specimen: R = 0.88 showed the following: - The relationship between the necessity and feasibility of the management measures are positively correlated because R = 0.88 marked (+), which is closely correlated, ie the necessity and feasibility of the management measures are highly relevant - The necessity of measures is at which extent, the feasibilities will be at the respective level From the test results, teachers and managers interviewed appreciated the necessity and feasibility of the measures proposed by the author This shows that the proposed measures in the thesis is the basis for the practical application of the self-study management of students' Hung Vuong University 20 Chapter SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS SUMMARY This study sought determine the status of the self- study activities of students in terms of: Students' awareness on self- study, study skills, services for self- study, teaching method and administration Specially, it aimed to Find out the factors that may affect the activities of students' self- study both external factors and internal factors; to find out the relationship between self- study activities and factors affecting the self- study activities; to identify the different management measures of self-study activities; to assess the necessity and feasibility of the management measures for self-study activities; (2) contents of training program; (3) attraction of subject/course; (4) teaching method; (5) learning environment Internal factors: 06 internal factors having great affect including: (1) personal motivation, (2) health, (3) learning method, (4) cognition capacity, (5) personal adjustment, (6) management plan of the self-study There is a significant relationship between self- study activities and factor affecting the self- study activities ( Sig < 0.05) Propose management measures for students self- study activities based from its necessity and feasibility Planning the management of students' self-study Organizing activities to raise awareness, build attitudes and self-learning skills training for students Organizing the implementation of innovative teaching centered methods towards learner in order to promote positive student selfstudy 23 4.Strengthening scientific research in the process of training to promote students' motivation in studying Organizing and managing students in- and -out classroom Managing and efficiently using facilities and equipment for student self-study activities RECOMENDATION Based from the findings of the study, the following are recommended: - The director board should pay more attention, direction in management of study activities of students Concretize the written content; the guiding ideology of the school to the relevant department implemented a basis - Enhanced direct the innovation of teaching methods, assessment of teachers towards promoting positivity of the school; organizing regularly practical activities, forging skills for students - More investment on facilities catering for teaching and learning in a systematic and modern standard Effective exploitation of the Center for Information and electronic library to provide full and timely documentation of teaching and in service learning - Enhanced training methods and student study skills, self- study, arouse desire in student learning, making students more interested in learning - Organize multiple playgrounds, useful forum for students, such as students studying science club courses, conferences and seminars on self-learning method for students; Stock powerful movement for autonomy in learning; movement launched initiatives proposed in academic and creative ideas 24 - Organize activities for students practical approach, promoting the spirit of volunteerism for community life, such as voluntary youth movement;
