case study Provide for Migration to Broadband Services Customer: A Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC) with an existing telephony-only fiber network decides to offer DS1 and DS3 services over fiber, and plans to add video in the future. The Existing Network: • Consists of an all-splice set up, utilizing numerous splice cases with splice trays. • Has limited capacity for growth before splice re-entry is no longer possible. • Provides poor circuitry identification and cable management. Requirements: • The network must be able to support rapid change and turn-up of new services. • Equipment must be well-protected against moisture and the elements. • Storage system must be non-obtrusive. ADC Solution: ADC helped the RBOC migrate from their all-splice method to a combined fiber cross-connect/splice network in order to alleviate the congestion of their heavily-trafficked splice cases. ADC’s BGX/ACE secure, easy access, below- and above-ground fiber cable management systems: • Improved cable management and circuitry identification. • Met all the RBOC’s environmental protection and aesthetic requirements. • Provided greater ring diversity farther out in the loop. The systems support the RBOC’s desire to add video services in the future by allowing it to rapidly change or add new services as they are needed, where they are needed, rather than at the central office. 2 ADC Telecommunications, Inc., P.O. Benefits Realized by the Customer: BGX/ACE systems support rapid change, maintenance and turn-up of new services, creating faster generation of revenues and decreased costs of technical labor and service downtime. Technicians are no longer forced to work in crowded splice cases. The risk of cutting the wrong fiber or knocking down live service is virtually eliminated. BGX/ACE systems arrive preprovisioned, eliminating guess work from fiber identification. Technicians access the network at virtually any time without inconveniencing customers and without requiring expensive new structures.
