Instructor Notes Module 7: Selecting Solution Technologies Introduction Part of physical design is evaluating solution technologies. This module teaches students how to evaluate the available technologies in order to make appropriate choices for the business solution. Students will learn about types of solution technologies and some factors to consider when selecting technologies from these categories. After completing this module, you will be able to: ! Describe Microsoft ® Windows ® Distributed interNet Applications Architecture (Windows DNA) and how it applies to an application’s development. ! Describe a process for selecting solution technologies for implementing the designed solution. ! Evaluate implementation technologies from the perspective of the solution requirements, business considerations, enterprise architecture considerations, and whether the technology should be reused, purchased, or built. ! Evaluate the technology implications of solution requirements. ! Identify technology types and their evaluation criteria. Instructor Notes Module 7: Selecting Solution Technologies 3 Activities Activity 7.1: Determining Technology Requirements In this activity, you will identify the technology requirements in the Ferguson and Bardell, Inc. case study. This activity demonstrates that business decisions drive technology decisions. After completing this activity, students will be able to: ! Identify the types of technologies required by a scenario that presents a business challenge. ! To prepare for the activity 1. Complete the activity. Think through alternative answers that students might present during the discussion. 2. Prepare examples from your own experience. 3. Prepare some questions to foster a class discussion. Activity 7.2: Determine the Impact of Technology on a Windows DNA Design In this activity, students will identify possible implications of technology on a Windows DNA solution. After completing this activity, you will be able to: ! Specify and articulate the impact of technology types upon each layer of a Windows DNA solution. ! To prepare for the activity 1. Complete the activity. Think through alternative answers that students might present during the discussion. Check your answers against the solution document. 2. Prepare examples from your own experience. 3. Prepare some questions to foster a class discussion. 4 Instructor Notes Module 7: Selecting Solution Technologies Module Strategy Use the following strategy to present this module: ! Distributed Applications Using Windows DNA This section introduces Windows DNA and briefly explores its components and advantages. Your primary objective should be to get the class to see the interlocking, interdependent nature of the various elements of the Windows DNA architecture, and to begin to understand the advantages of writing applications that comply with the Windows DNA framework. ! Technology Selection Process This is a critical section in which students learn criteria for selecting candidate technologies. It is vital that you communicate the importance of examining all of the criteria, not just the technical ones. Additionally, it is critical that students recognize the implications that the selection of technology can have on business goals, plans, and documents. Emphasize that the technology is a tool that supports business requirements and goals. ! Activity 7.1: Determining Technology Requirements The focus of this activity is fairly broad. You might want to narrow the focus by assigning specific areas of the case study to each group of students. You should facilitate the discussion to develop a class consensus on the primary implications of technology requirements as stated in the Ferguson and Bardell, Inc. case study. ! Considerations by Technology Type This section builds upon the concept of technology selection by examining various considerations within each part of the Windows DNA architecture. For some students, this section will be somewhat new; they may have never considered the implications that their various choices of technology (such as what operating system to select) may have on their environment. Be prepared with examples of such implications, in addition to the examples in the text. This section also leads into the next two modules, Module 8 (“Solution Design and the Component Object Model”) and Module 9 (“Designing Solutions with Microsoft Technologies”). The technology types presented in this module provide the basic definitions and framework for the specific details of Modules 8 and 9. ! Activity 7.2: Determine the Impact of Technology on a Windows DNA Design In this activity, students examine each of the technology types and identify how the technology type might impact a Windows DNA application. Use this activity to solidify students’ understanding of the technology types because these technology types are the basis for Module 9. .
