ChemistryCO63isthefirstsemesterofIntroductiontoChemistryLaboratory.Thisbroadsurvey coursein
chemistry is designed primarily for nonscience majors and those planning careers in allied health or
horticulture.IntroductiontoChemistryisacorecurriculumcourse;however,itisnotacceptedbymedical
or dentalschools,andcannot normallybeusedasaprerequisiteforChemistry121(OrganicChemistry).If
youexpecttotakeScienceandTechnologyco ursesinChemistry(100levelorabove),youshouldtaket he
7174sequence(GeneralChemistry)ratherthanthiscourse.
AstudentwillnotbepermittedtoenrollinChemistry63unlessthatstudentalsoenrollsinChemistry61,
orhaspreviouslycompletedChemistry61oritsequivalentwithapassinggrade.Anystudentwhohasa

LABORATORYPREPARATION: Studentsshouldexpecttospendanaverageof7hourseachweek
outsideoflab,lecture,orrecit ationpreparingforChem63laborat ory.Thispreparationincludespreparing
foro rdo ingprelaborat oryassignments,prelabquizzes,laboratoryreports,midtermandfinalexaminations.
WITHDRAWALS: Student s may withdraw from thecourse witha grade ofWat anytimeuptoand
including Tuesday,June13,2006. Nowithdrawalispossibleaftert hat date.Astudentwhowithdraws
from Chemistry 61 may or may not withdraw from Chemistry 63. Student s who have previously
withdrawn fromthesamecourse, orwhohave alreadywithdrawnfrom 5 courses sinceSeptember2003
maynotwithdraw.Dropsandwithdrawalsarehandledbythestudent'scollegeoffice. Thefulluniversity

INCOMPLETES: The grade of I (Incomplete) will only be considered in cases of end of semester
emergency situations where at least 60% of theterm's work has already been completed with apassing
grade,andonlyfor reasonsbeyondthestudent’scontrol.Toreceivea gradeofI,thestudentfirstmustsign
awrittenagreementwiththeinstructorinvolvedandtheChemistrydepartment,specifyingthemannerby
whichthemissedwork willbecompleted. NotifyDr.Bloxtonifyoubelieveyouhaveavalidreasonto

ELECTRONIC CALCULATORS: Although the types of calculations employed in Chemistry 63 are
generally quite simple, you may find that a pocket calculator (pro perly operated) will improve your
accuracy.Ifyouwishtoinvestinacalculator,itissuggestedthatyouselectamodelwhichcandealwith
logarithms and scientific notation. Be certain that if you use acalculator, it is kept in good condition,
especially for quizzes and examinations. Calculator failure willnot beaccept ed asan excusefor a poor
quiz or examination. The sharing ofcalculators, use o finformationstoragedevices, cellphones,pagers
and other communication devices during quizzes or examinations is pr ohibited. Students may not use
programmablecalculato rsorcalculatorsthatareintheircellphones.
OFFICEHOURS:OfficehoursforeachinstructorinChemistry63willbeannouncedatthebeginningof
thesecondmeetingofclasses.
MID TERM REPORTS: The Universit y requires, for submission to them, a mid term report fo r this
courseforeachstudent.Thesereportswillbeusedtoadviseandcouncilstudentsonseekingappro priate
assistanceintheirstudies.
LABORATORY SAFETY: It is expected that everyone in the lab will conduct themselves in a
professional manner. Allstudents are required to weardepartmentallyapprovedsafetyglassesor safety
gogglesduringlab.Studentsthatdon't wearorhavesafetyglassesorgoggleswillnotbeallowed towork
in the laboratory. It is the responsibility of the student to purchase and keep their own safety glasses.
Appropriateclothing andshoesaretobeworninthelaboratory.Shorts,miniskirts,tanktops,clothing
that exposesbare midriffs, sandals or open toe shoes are notpermitted.Laborator ycoatsorlaboratory
apronsarerequireditemsandwillbesuppliedbytheChemistryDepartment.Anyonewhowearscontact
lensesshouldinformtheirinstructor ;westronglysuggestyounotweartheminlab. Anystudentwhois
pregnantormaybecomepregnantduringthecourseofthesemestershouldconsultaphysiciantodecide
whether or not it is advisableto continue in the course. Any students with any medical conditions that
mightrequirespecialtreatmentintheeventofinjuryshouldinformtheirinstructor,sothatintheeventof
anemergencywemayrespondappropriately.Allstudentsarerequiredtopurchase,read, understandand
sign the Temple University Student and Laboratory Use General Guidelines for CST (University Copy

this signed document. Previously signed documentsfrompast Chem 63 labs may not be used. A new

Academic cheating is, generally, the thwartingor breaking of the generalrulesofacademicworkorthe
specific rules of the individual courses. It includes falsifying data; submitting, without the instructor's
approval,workinonecoursewhichwasdoneforanother;helpingotherstoplagiarizeorcheatfromone's
ownoranother's work;o ractuallydoingtheworkofanotherperson.
The penalty for academic dishonesty can vary from receiving a reprimand and a failing grade fo r a
particularassignment,toafailinggradeinthecourse,tosuspensionorexpulsionfromtheUniversity.The
penaltyvarieswith thenatureoftheoffense, theindividualinstructor, thedepartment, andtheschoolor
college.
Student s who believe that they have been unfairly accused may appeal through the School or College's

LABORATORY GRADING: A student's laboratory grade will be based upon the st udent's overall
performance in labor atory quizzes (10%), as well as on the laboratory exercises, that is, the laboratory
reports (50%),and thestudent's gradesonamidtermexamination(20%)andafinalexamination(20%).
Thesequizzesandexaminationswillbetakeninthelaboratoryr oom.
LABORATORY QUIZZES (10%): There will be a total of nine laborato ry quizzes (starting with
laboratory meetingnumber2Wednesday, 5/17/06andTuesday5/23/06)thatwillbegivenatthebeginning
ofthelaboratory period.Theselabo ratoryquizzescancovertheory,laboratorytechniques,calculations,
andlaboratoryproceduresfortheexperimentthatstudentsaredoinginthatlaboratoryperiodormaterial
that waspreviously covered to helpprepareformidtermandfinalexams. Alaboratoryquizwillalsobe
given during the midterm and final exam review sessions. (No te: These laboratory quizzes during the
midterm andfinalexamreviewsessionsarenotmakeuplaboratoryquizzes. ) Thelo westlaboratoryquiz
willbedropped.Ifonelaboratoryquizismissed,ascoreofzerowillbeassignedforthemissedlaboratory
quizandthislaboratory quizwillbedropped insteadofthelowestlaborat oryquiz.Onlyonelaboratory
quizisdropped. Ifastudentmissestwoormorelaboratoryquizzes,scoresofzerowillbeassignedforall
missedlaboratoryquizzes. Thelaboratoryquizcannotbe giventoastudentthatcomesinto classafter
anotherstudenthasalreadyfinishedandleftthequizroomoraftereveryoneinthequizroomhasfinished
the quiz. If a student misses alaboratory quiz, they may take the quiz in another section of Chem 63
laboratory that is taking the quiz onthe same material. Otherwise makeup quizzesare not given. The
makeup quiz must be giventotheinstructor thatgavethemakeupquiz.Makeupquizzesarenot given
during laboratory makeup times. Copying, talking and other forms of communication between students
duringalaboratoryquizareprohibited.Thesharingofcalculators,useofinfo rmationstoragedevices,cell
phones, pagers and other communication devices during quizzes is prohibited. Students may not use
programmablecalculato rsorcalculatorsthatareintheircellphones.

MIDTERMEXAMINATION(20%)ANDFINALEXAMINATION(20%): Thelaboratorymidterm
examinationsarescheduledforWednesday 6/7/06andThursday6/8/06.Thelaborat ory finalexaminations
are scheduled for Monday 6/26/06 and Tuesday 6/27/06. If a student misses the midterm or final
examinationtheymaytakethemidtermorfinalexaminationinanothersectionofChem63thatistaking
the midterm or final examination. If a student has an excusable reason for missing a midterm or final
examinationamakeupmidtermorfinalexaminationcanbegiven.If,however,astudentmissestakinga
midterm or final exam, during the exam times when it is given, then a grade of zero will be given if a
student has no excusedabsencefor missingthemidt ermorfinalexam.Foranabsencetobeconsidered
excusable, thestudent must providethelaboratoryinstructorwithawritt endocumentednote,explaining
thereasonfortheabsence;whereupon,theinstructorwillnotifythestudentwhetherornottheabsenceis
consideredexcusable.Themidtermorfinalexaminationcannotbegiventoastudentthatcomesintoclass
after another student has already finishedand left the exam room. Copying, talking and o ther formsof
communication between student s during a midterm or final examination are prohibited. The sharing of
calculators, use of information storage devices, cell phones, pagers and other communication devices
duringa midterm or finalexaminationis prohibited. Studentsmay notuseprogrammablecalculator s or

LABORATORY REPORTS (50%): Prelaboratory report sheets are due at the beginning of every
laboratoryperiod.Thelaboratoryinstructorwilllooktoseeifthestudentsattemptedtoanswerallofthe
prelaboratory questions and a score will be assigned. These same prelaboratory questions will also be
handed in with the rest of the laboratory report and will be graded. Laboratory reports are due the
laboratory period after a lab isscheduledfor completion.Chem63laboratoryinstructors willinitialthe
datasheetsforthelaboratoryreportsattheendofthelaboratoryperiod.Theseoriginaldatasheetsareto
be turned in as part of the student’s laboratory report. The complete laboratory report includes the
prelaboratory questions and the original laboratory report sheets. Students are to work by themselves
inst eadofwithpartnersoringroupswheneverpossible.Allstudentsthatworkinpairsorinlargergroups
than indicated by the laboratory instructor will lose 25% of the total value of the laboratory report.
Student sthatturninalaboratoryreportthattheydidn'tperfor mwillreceiveasco reof0%fortheentire
laboratoryreport.
MAKEUPLABORATORYSESSIONSANDREPORTS: Student sthatmissalaborat orycanmakeup
the missed laboratory in another section of Chem 63 t hat is doing the same laboratory experiment.
Student scanalsomakeupamissedlaboratoryduringthemakeuplaboratorysessionsonMonday,6/5/06,
and Tuesday, 6/6/06, and on Wednesday, 6/7/06, and Thursday, 6/8/06, after the midterm examination
reviewsessionsandmidtermexaminationsarecompleted.Studentscanalsomakeupamissedlaboratory
duringt he makeup laboratorysessionsonWednesday,6/21/06, andThursday,6/22/06, andonMonday,
6/26/06, and Tuesday, 6/27/06, after the final examination review sessions and final examinations are
completed.Alaboratorymakeupdocumentationformisrequiredifastudentdoesamakeuplaboratory.
Thislaboratorymakeupdocumentationformist obeturnedinwiththemakeuplaboratoryreport. Makeup
laboratory reports that are turned in without this laboratory makeup documentation form will receive a
scoreofzero.Astudentmustbepreparedtodoamakeuplaborator y.Thispreparationincludesbutisnot
limitedt othefo llowing:1.Havingtheirownsafetyglasseswiththem.2.Knowingwhatexperiment(s)
theyneedtomakeup.3.Havingthenecessarylaboratorycoursematerialswiththembeforethest artof
the makeup laboratory session. 4. Reading the laborator y materials before the start of the makeup
laboratorysession.5.Completingtheprelaboratoryquestionsbeforethestartofthemakeuplaboratory
session. Students willreceiveascoreofzerofortheinitialcheckoftheprelaboratoryquestionsift hese
prelaboratoryquestionsarenotcompletedatthebeginningofthelaboratorymakeupsession.Ifast udent
needs to do more than one makeup laboratory, the student should be prepared to attend morethanone
makeuplabo ratorysession.
