with small business owners or grade school children, you are truly making an incredible impact and are
helping to create a better world for future generations.
As you begin to organize your SIFE teams, develop educational projects and present the results in
competition, remember that you are developing invaluable teamwork, leadership, and communication skills
which will set you apart and provide you with outstanding experiences you can apply in the future.
On behalf of Unilever, I want to wish you the best of luck with both your academic pursuits and your SIFE
program activities. We look forward to seeing you at upcoming SIFE events and competitions.
Sincerely,

The SIFE Program
4
The Organization
SIFE is an international organization that brings together the top
leaders of today and tomorrow to create a better more sustainable
world through the positive power of business.
SIFE’s worldwide network consists of university students,
academic professionals and business leaders.
Working with leading corporate partners and member universities,
SIFE establishes student programs on campuses around the world.
With the support and encouragement of their faculty advisors and
a local business advisory board, SIFE students apply business
concepts to develop community outreach projects that improve the
quality of life and standard of living for people in need.
SIFE teams’ projects address a variety of topics, such as market
economics, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, personal success
skills, environmental sustainability and business ethics. Rather than
mandating a uniform set of projects, teams are encouraged to work
within the framework of these topics while adapting their approach
to the diverse needs of people in different communities. The result
is a program that is global in scope and purpose with the flexibility
and responsiveness of a community-based organization.
The culmination of the SIFE program is an annual series of
competitions that provides a forum for teams to present the
results of their projects, which are evaluated by business leaders
serving as judges. Teams compete first at the regional and
national levels, then at the international level when the national
champion teams from each country meet at the SIFE World Cup.
The connections made possible through the SIFE network
are benefiting individuals and communities around the world
while fostering an environment for personal and professional
development among the participants. In addition to the
community aspect of the program, SIFE’s leadership and career
initiatives are designed to create meaningful opportunities for
learning and exchange as well as the placement of students and
alumni with companies with SIFE partner companies.
The Individual SIFE Team
SIFE teams are organized on individual university campuses.
There are intentionally very few rules or procedures established
by SIFE World Headquarters for how these teams should
be organized and structured. Rules can be found in the
“Membership Guidelines” section. Questions a SIFEteam may have
that are not addressed in that section are all left to the discretion
of the individual SIFEteam to answer, with the help of their
Country Leader or Program Manager.
There are many ways to organize and operate a SIFE team. Each
college or university is as unique as the community it serves.
This flexibility allows each institution to structure its SIFEteam
in a manner that best fits its faculty, student and community
needs. Each SIFEteam has complete freedom to adopt rules and
procedures to govern its own activities, beyond those outlined
in this handbook, as long as they are consistent with the SIFE
Membership Guidelines.
This same flexibility applies to each team’s educational efforts.
The only parameters SIFE World Headquarters places on a team’s
educational outreach programs is that they should be designed
to educate others about the six SIFE educational topics: market
economics, success skills, entrepreneurship, financial literacy,
environmental sustainability, and business ethics. Beyond
this, questions as to how many projects teams choose to carry
out, which audiences they target, whether they design original
educational material or use pre-designed material, etc., are all left
to the discretion of each team.
A set of “best practices” and suggestions for building a quality
and sustainable SIFEteam can be found in this handbook. The
SIFE Program staff in each country is also available to meet teams
individually and can provide personal consultation to teams as
they organize and develop their educational outreach projects.

Membership Guidelines
6
Membership Guidelines
The following guidelines govern the activity and communication by
SIFE teams, SIFE faculty advisors, SIFE students, and any other
representatives of a SIFE team, while representing themselves as
official members of the SIFE network and while operating under
and with the use of the SIFE trademark.
Eligibility
The Board of Directors of each SIFE country, working within
parameters defined by the SIFE World Headquarters,
determines eligibility rules for individual institutions as well as
student and faculty participation.
The SIFE World Headquarters’ 501c (3) status as a non-profit
organization in the United States does not extend to
individual SIFE teams, nor are the teams allowed to use the
SIFE World Headquarters’ tax identification number when
receiving contributions.
Institutions
Each individual institution may have only one SIFE team.
Additionally, branches of a college or university may each have their
own teams as long as they are located on different campuses. It
must be noted that individual SIFE country operations may have
additional membership criteria which would be communicated to
teams where applicable. In these instances, each team must have a
different faculty advisor.
Some SIFE countries may require new teams to apply for
membership prior to being accepted as a member of the SIFE
Network. Please contact your Country Leader or Program Manager
to see if this process is applicable in your region.
Liability Disclaimer
By participating in the SIFE program or SIFE events, the
participating academic institutions, faculty advisors and team
participants acknowledge that SIFE is not responsible for
team projects, activities or events. Faculty advisors and team
participants will follow the guidelines set forth in the SIFETeam
Handbook and their own institutional policies and regulations.
Travel to SIFE events is strictly at each participant’s own risk and
expense. SIFE shall not be liable for injury or loss of property
traveling to or during a SIFE event. Participating academic
institutions, Faculty advisors and team participants agree to
release, fully discharge, indemnify and hold harmless SIFE, its
affiliates, officers, directors or representatives, from any and all
liabilities, losses, claims, judgments, damages (whether direct or
indirect, consequential, incidental or special), expenses and costs
(including reasonable fees and expenses of counsel) that they may
suffer or incur by reason of participating in any way in the SIFE
program or at a SIFE event.
Faculty Advisors
In order to be recognized by SIFE World Headquarters, each SIFE
team must have a faculty advisor. To qualify as a faculty advisor,
candidates must be employed by the college or university they
represent. No restrictions are made as to the specific nature of
the applicant’s role at the institution they represent. Each SIFE
team may have more than one faculty advisor. All faculty advisors
should be registered at www.sife.org or through the Active Team
Sheet (registration though the Active Team Sheet is a mandate for
all faculty advisors outside of the USA).
7
Students
Any person officially enrolled as a graduate or undergraduate
student at a college or university, whether full or part-time, is
eligible to participate in SIFE. Students may only serve on the
SIFE team of the university at which they are enrolled. Students
who attend classes on more than one campus, or students enrolled
in both a two-year and four-year program (or other) at the same
time, may participate on more than one team, but are only
permitted to represent one team at competition.
Each individual SIFEteam has complete authority to establish
restrictions or qualifications for membership beyond those
outlined above. To be recognized as an official and active SIFE
student participant by SIFE World Headquarters, students must
have invested a minimum of 10 hours and registered online
at www.sife.org or through the Active Team Sheet (registration
though the Active Team Sheet is a mandate for all students
outside of the USA).
Alumni
To be a member of the SIFE Alumni Network, an individual must
have been actively involved in SIFE while enrolled in college or
university and must have graduated from the college or university
at which they were an active member of the SIFE team. Upon
graduation, registered SIFEteam members can join the SIFE
Alumni Network by changing the status in their online SIFE
accounts from “student” to “alumnus” or “alumna”.
Special Partnerships and Opportunities
SIFE teams that are engaged in special partnerships and/or granted
opportunities to be involved in certain activities through the efforts
of the SIFE organization must adhere to the guidelines set forth in
the SIFETeam Special Partnership/Opportunity Agreement. Note
that special partnerships and opportunities include, but are not
limited to: featuring teams and/or their projects in SIFE marketing
campaigns (including www.sife.org), internships, exchange
programs, scholarships, speaking engagements/presentations at
SIFE (or SIFE-affiliated) functions/events, projects with or without
funding opportunities (e.g. research, national/international donor-
related, etc), and more. To review the full terms and conditions of
this agreement, please refer to the sample document included on
page 14 of this handbook.

Code of Conduct
In the SIFE organization, where borders between countries are
becoming increasingly transparent, principles adhered to by
SIFE network participants are becoming the necessary criteria
for building a good reputation in the international business
community. The following principles are the basis on which
ongoing quality relationships are formed and maintained. This
Code of Conduct should be applied in good faith, with reasonable
business judgment, to enable SIFE to achieve its mission within
the framework of the laws of each participating country. It applies
to all individuals participating in the SIFE network in any capacity
(including, but not limited to, SIFE employees, SIFE student team
members, SIFE faculty advisors, judges at SIFE competitions, and
members of the SIFE Board and Business Advisory Boards). These
individuals will be referred to as network participants within this
Code of Conduct.
Key Beliefs Applicable to All Participants
SIFE expects all network participants to treat one another and
all people with dignity and constant respect. We will value the
differences between diverse individuals from around the world.
Abusive, harassing or offensive conduct is unacceptable, whether
verbal, physical or visual. This consideration would prohibit
any network participant at any time from physically or verbally
abusing another person; from speaking negatively about other
network members while representing themselves as an official
member of the network; from using excessive profane language or
vulgar gestures; from demeaning or belittling another person or
making derogatory comments about his or her race, sex, religion,
age, disability, national origin or sexual orientation; and from
engaging in conduct intended, or so reckless as to be likely to
cause harm to another.
SIFE expects all participants to demonstrate honesty and integrity
in their statements and actions. All SIFE participants shall adhere
to the ideals of honesty, fairness and “doing the right thing”
without compromise, even when circumstances make it difficult.
When speaking to the news media and in other public statements
and settings, participants may be viewed as spokespersons for the
SIFE organization. They should conduct themselves with respect
and dignity, and they should not demean the organization or other
network participants. If, in the context of public statements and
settings, participants wish to speak as private individuals, they
shall make clear their intention to do so.
Network participants should display and use the SIFE logo only
in accordance with SIFE’s Trademark Guidelines and in a manner
appropriate to SIFE’s vision and mission.
It is the personal responsibility of each individual working within
and through the network to observe high standards of business
and personal ethics in all dealings, whether inside or outside the
activities of the network.
SIFE seeks to be highly regarded around the world. We wish to
earn and preserve a good reputation by striving for excellence
in everything we do. As a participant in the SIFE network, your
actions are a reflection of the SIFE worldwide organization
at all times.
Any member of the network who believes another member has
acted in violation of this code should report the violation in
writing to the President and CEO at SIFE World Headquarters. Any
complaint not filed in this manner will be disregarded.
9
Operating Under the SIFE trademark
The SIFE name is a trademark of the SIFE World Headquarters
and legally registered in each of the countries that operate a SIFE
national organization.
All officially enrolled SIFE teams are authorized to use the
SIFE name and logo in association with their team’s operational
activities and educational projects, within their home country, so
long as:
1. Those activities are consistent with SIFE’s mission and official
code of conduct,
2. They never reproduce the SIFE name or logo without the
attachment of their own college or university name, and
3. They never alter, in any way, the official SIFE name and logo
and adhere to all other rules explained in the official SIFE
brand usage guidelines document.
Creating a Team Logo
SIFE has developed an automated logo generator to help teams
easily create a logo that is consistent with the official SIFE brand
guidelines. The logo generator will allow you to produce both a
color and black and white version of the logo with your university
name listed below. A black and white example is shown below.
Using the Official SIFE Tagline
The official tagline for SIFE is:
“A head for business. A heart for the world.”
This tagline is also an officially registered trademark of the SIFE
World Headquarters and we are currently in development of
guidelines for usage of the tagline by SIFE teams. Please note
that the logo generator does not provide an option to include a
tagline with the logo.
Brand Guidelines
The SIFE brand usage guidelines referenced above contain the
complete terms and conditions for use of the SIFE name and
logo by individual teams and countries. They define the visual
and verbal elements that make up the SIFE brand including
explanations, guidelines and examples of how to produce
professional and correct SIFE branded communications and
marketing materials.
