Cable pathways and distances between logical distribution points vary from building to building, a situation that complicates materials ordering and lengthens installation efforts. Even though the building owner views fiber to each living unit as a tremendous benefit to attract and retain tenants or unit owners, the reality is that the owner really wants the installation team in and out of the building as quickly as possible. The variability of structure across MDU buildings often results in added costs for the service provider. From bringing the wrong materials to job sites to having to carry an extended inventory of cable assemblies and other materials, the total cost of the project can quickly escalate. Worse, every day added to the project due to materials delays or just added time for splicing delays time to revenue. Equally important as saving time and money is implementing each MDU optical fiber distribution network with consistent high quality. Splices can vary; service providers want neither the added costs of troubleshooting optical fibers six months after installation nor the lost revenue of customers aggravated by service quality. Install and forget about it—this is the mark of the properly designed and installed MDU optical fiber distribution network. 1/08 • 105667AE Plug-and-Play FTTP Architecture for MDUs Plug-and-Play FTTP Architecture for MDUs RapidReel ™ Technology Enables Fast, Secure Implementations 2 www.adc.com • +1-952-938-8080 • 1-800-366-3891 A) The Rapid FDH 3000i is mounted in the lower level of the MDU and is configured for spliced distribution cables. B) Next, Rapid Fiber MDU Collector Enclosures are wall- mounted in central locations to provide distribution points for the network. Six MT adapters within each enclosure offer fast, plug-and-play connections for cable distributed from each floor. Each enclosure is configured with a stub cable that routes to the FDH 3000i. C) The technician splices stub cable from each Rapid Fiber MDU Collector Enclosure to distribution cable within the FDH 3000i. D) A distribution point for each living unit is then created with installation of Rapid FDTs on each floor. Payout of MT stub cable is quick and secure with the RapidReel system for unspooling MT stub cable for installation in the Rapid Fiber MDU Collector Enclosure. Once the MT stub cable has been routed and connected, slack is safely stored within the wall box, the built-in payout spool is removed, and the FDT is secured to the wall. Solution ADC features versatile and highly functional solutions designed specifically to help service providers deploy MDU optical fiber distribution networks for a variety of architectures—and do so in less time and with less total cost on a consistent, high quality basis for every building. Each of these solutions offers multiple configurations for the unique requirements of each building. The OmniReach ® Rapid Fiber System for MDU Applications includes the following FTTP products: Rapid Indoor Fiber Distribution Hub 3000i (FDH 3000i). This inside plant cabinet serves as the main • distribution and cross connect point for the MDU. It supports splicing with integrated splice tray or patch panels for cable that is factory pre-terminated and tested with MT connectors. High density configurations support up to 432 living units from a single cabinet. Rapid Fiber MDU Collector Enclosures. The enclosure serves as zoned, intermediate distribution points • within the MDU for designs using MT cable stubs instead of splices. Each enclosure accommodates up to six MT pairs and ships with 72 fiber riser ribbon stubs. Rapid Fiber Distribution Terminals (FDT). The Rapid FDT serves as the distribution point for living units. • It eliminates the need for separate cable assemblies, splice cases and boxes by integrating the patent- pending RapidReel ™ cable payout system that enables quick unspooling of up to 500 feet of MT stub 12 or 24 count optical fiber cable from a single 6" x 9" wall box. The FDT with RapidReel technology enables a plug-and-play optical fiber distribution network for any MDU. MT stub cable is pulled from the integrated wall box spool either on the wall or from the shipping box. Use of radius protected optical fiber cable that can withstand tighter bends protects stubbed cable as it is pulled to the distribution point. Use of factory terminated and tested MT connectors instead of splicing provide a plug-and-play environment that reduces labor costs and speeds project completion. Simplified ordering and stocking of materials further reduces cost. When compared to buying cable assemblies, splice cases and wall boxes separately, the integrated FDT is the low cost solution. Saves Time – Reduced splicing, use of MT connectors and the RapidReel payout system for MT cable stubs reduces time required for installation. You get out of the building fast with quicker installation practices. Saves Riser Space – ADC 3 mm microcable technology utilizing Reduced Bend Radius Fiber takes up less space in risers than traditional riser cables and can also be bent around tight corners. Additionally, ADCs 3.6mm Indoor/Outdoor cable offers the flexibility to be run both indoors and outdoors to help with difficult distribution cable runs. Adds Flexibility – Rapid Fiber Distribution Terminals can be ordered for efficient payout of any length of pre-terminated 12 or 24 count optical fiber MT cable stubs from 100 to 500 ft and includes storage for up to 100 ft of slack within the same 6" x 9" enclosure. Instead of ordering different cable assemblies, boxes and splice cases, the FDT is an integrated solution suitable for all installation scenarios across multiple MDU projects. Simplifies Ordering and Inventory – Instead of having to specify and order different enclosures and cable assembly lengths for each job, you choose one or two standard MT stub cable lengths to fit each job—easing ordering, on-site logistics and inventory management. Ensures Consistent Quality – Factory terminated and tested MT cable stubs eliminate the variability inherent with field splicing. Consistent, high quality MT connectors ensure fewer rework, longer service life for the premises network, and less troubles for the life of the network. E) The FDH 3000i is mounted in the lower level of the MDU and is configured with MT patch panels. F) A distribution point for each living unit is then created with installation of FDTs on each floor. Payout of MT stub cable is quick and secure with the RapidReel system for unspooling MT stub cable for installation directly into MT patch panels within the FDH 3000i. Once the MT stub cable has been routed and connected, slack is safely stored within the wall box, the built-in payout spool is removed, and the FDT is secured to the wall. F E Alternatively, the MDU distribution network can be configured so that MT stubs are routed directly to the FDH 3000i, removing the zoned or intermediate enclosure from the network architecture and removing more splices from the architecture.
