Activities
Activity 1.1: Categorizing Existing Information
As the first activity in the course, this activity helps students get used to
working in groups and completing a task within a certain amount of time. The
output of the activity also begins to orient students toward thinking
systematically about data.
The process of designing a database involves analytical thinking about
requirements as they relate to data. People regularly apply analytical thinking at
work and in everyday life. This activity provides an opportunity for students to
exercise skills they currently possess as tools that they can apply in this course.
After completing this activity, students will be able to:
!
Categorize a set of existing information.
!
Identify the characteristics and basic relationships in that set of information.
!
To prepare for the activity
1. Have one flip chart and a set of markers ready for each group of students.
2. Perform the activity yourself, being sure to categorize the information into
various possible groupings.

Overview of the Course
Use this section to set the stage for the entire course. Summarize the
objectives so students will understand the concepts and skills they will learn
in the course.
Describe the modules so that students can see the process they will use to
design data services and data models.
