CASE study KRONE (Australia) Holdings Pty Limited 2 Hereford Street Berkeley Vale NSW 2261 PO Box 335 Wyong NSW 2259 Phone: 02 4389 5000 Fax: 02 4388 4499 Help Desk: 1800 801 298 Email: kronehlp@krone.com.au Web: www.krone.com.au Jo No 5510 06/03 KRONE/Initiative - Building a path to the next technology Upgraded cable system lays foundation for media house's future The world's largest independent media consultancy has upgraded its Sydney office cable infrastructure system to cope with its growing business and to "build a path to the next technology". Initiative Media is the largest independent media services company in the world, with 2800 employees in 75 offices in 35 countries. "We needed to upgrade our data lines immediately because our business incorporates a great deal of modelling, research work and use of the internal media planning/buying and financial database. Our network traffic is substantial and with recent new business wins and staff increases the traffic is only going to get heavier," said Initiative's IT manager Ashley Cooney. "Our information flow is the lifeblood of our organisation, so it has to be accurate and it has to be quick." Initiative chose the Category 5eT TrueNet ™ package of cable and connectors from KRONE Australia. "We chose KRONE because of the quality of its product and its warrantied zero bit error rate. Accuracy is vitally important to us - our information must be always available and correct. Any transmission problems slow down our operation, which means we're less efficient. We were looking for a solution that delivered immediate short-term benefits as well as putting us in a position to take advantage of higher end technologies as they come within our reach. "The old cable wasn't up to Category 5 standard. It was causing data errors and slowness in the network, which means time-outs. This was obviously unacceptable, so we made the decision to upgrade. Initially, I was looking at installers rather than original suppliers, but then KRONE appeared." Initiative discovered the KRONE solution when the company's finance director attended a seminar on e- commerce where he heard a lecture from a KRONE executive on the often overlooked importance of cabling in ensuring business benefits are maximised through the use of reliable technology. "One of the major causes of signal degradation is where components joining, say, the cable to a connector, are mismatched, ie they have different impedance (ohm) levels," explained Peter Davis, KRONE's sales and marketing manager. "This restricts flow and leads to signal loss, which in turn means your information must be retransmitted. This creates major disruptions to business activity. That's why we developed the TrueNet range of products, where all cable and components are supplied as a singlepackagewithallelementsperfectlymatched." Located in two turn-of-the-century terrace buildings in the centre of Sydney's CBD, Initiative and its installer, Datawire, had initial problems with the solid stone walls that joined the two halves. "This slowed us down a bit, but the project was nonetheless completed during working hours over a three week period." Initiative is looking at transferring its operations to another site sometime over the next few years so, in this instance, the cable upgrade only involved data, not telephony. "The timeframe meant we had to have a product that, along with providing for the future, would give us immediate benefits. That's why we went for a quality product with the guarantee of zero bit errors. "The value of the project is in the improvement in data transfer speed," said Mr Cooney. "That's hard to quantify right now, but once we've completed our testing and run the system in, we're confident we'll see the benefits we're after." . a singlepackagewithallelementsperfectlymatched."
