have more interest in learning, be active in activities organized by tutors and will be able to improve their foreign language ability in general, English listening ability in particular However, the majority of students still not pay attention to learning and practicing listening, on the contrary, they often focus on learning grammar to easily pass the exams during study, homework, and reading skills (accounting for 65% of class time); translation and learning vocabulary, speaking skills (accounting for 38% of class time), while listening and writing skills are focused only occasionally (only 14% and 9% of class time) (according to chart 3) 45% 40% 40% 35% 30% 25% 25% 20% 20% 18% 14% 15% 9% 10% 5% 0% Grammar Reading Vocabulary Speaking Listening Writing Chart 3.3 Allocating time for English learning activities of Thu Dau Mot University students According to the above survey results, only 14% of students spend their time practicing English listening skills However, the majority of students in 14% of these students only participate in class activities, or practice with friends with simple listening lessons, but have not really invested in afterschool training Thus, the majority of Thu Dau Mot University students often focus on short-term goals, which are exams and exams, rather than targeting long-term goals in the future such as hearing ability, understand and use English at work, in learning at higher levels This is one of the major difficulties and challenges for the school 14 In addition, many students who not have a rich vocabulary and not have effective methods of practice also gradually lose their passion for learning English; Since then, often neglected in learning, passive when going to class and not motivated to practice listening skills; They often have the feeling of "bored" to learn English, especially listening skills is one of the very important skills, it affects the understanding of dialogue in all communication This indifference and lack of consistency is caused by poor motivation and from which students tend to self-assess “poor” foreign language skills, and not want to learn or improve their English listening skills of themselves, using foreign languages in learning and in daily life Therefore, the motivation to learn and practice listening skills with students of Thu Dau Mot University is one of the important factors that need to be considered and promoted not only for each student, but also for the caring for, creating good motivation from teachers through the organization of lively, useful, new and exciting student hours - Knowledge of language The training process requires learners to have a rich vocabulary and apply appropriate grammar structures If students not have a good vocabulary foundation and a certain understanding of grammatical structures, the process of learning and practicing listening skills will be much more difficult English vocabulary and grammar help listeners to correctly understand the thoughts and contents of the listening lessons, avoid causing misunderstandings while listening, leading to wrong results Besides, listeners can also recognize whether their English listening ability is good or not through accumulated linguistic knowledge These language knowledge includes: knowledge of grammar, phonetics and phonology, word semantics, stressing, pronunciation, sentence structure, etc All relevant knowledge about Language affects the practice and progress of students, because learning a foreign language is not just about learning vocabulary and grammatical structures, but students must also know how to use the language suitable with the context and purpose of each activity Thu Dau Mot University English language students, most of them have a basic knowledge of English, but they did not expect that the program will be faster and more difficult than what they learned in high school Because of this, it has led to being bored, no longer passionate, interested in learning English, gradually lacking confidence and poor results Solutions to develop English listening skills: After learning about the causes and factors affecting the listening skills of Thu Dau Mot University students, I have come up with solutions to overcome and help students improve their English listening skills These solutions I 15 surveyed and applied it on 30 students Since then, combining the most effective solutions to help Thu Dau Mot University's students improve their English listening skills - Listen to favorite topics, elicit emotions Most students said that they have always loved watching, listening, and learning about their favorite topics to the extent of forgetting time, and never feeling tired It could be watching a late night football match, watching cooking shows, baking, flower arrangements, makeup, hair styling, cartoons, comedy and blog videos, TV shows actual, etc However, when he said he took a little time to open the book, turn on the tape to listen to English, the inspiration dropped without braking, hearing minutes started to yawn, listening for more minutes, even though the ear is listening but my mind is it's going to travel somewhere This is completely normal, must be "holy" in order to have the patience and discipline to listen to the boring content in English textbooks The solution to doing things you love and listening to English is to bring the two together Listening to English with favorite topics will make learning light and easy, students' excitement and inspiration to study are always high, which is a necessary condition for them to maintain everyday English listening habits Students should spend some time searching for youtube videos on their favorite topics in English and listen to it with all excitement such as: watching a soccer match live with English commentary; instructions for cooking Vietnamese dishes by foreigner; instructions for flower arrangement in Western, Chinese, Italian and Greek styles; makeup tutorial with Michelle Phan; If you like to travel, please follow but the youtube channel specializes in these travel channels Basically, students can find everything they love to watch and listen to on youtube and google, so don't blame it for nothing to see One of the very useful videos that most of the students often watch to improve their English listening skills are the extremely attractive reality TV shows from countries such as the US, UK, Australia For music and entertainment, there are: Got Talent, Next Top Model, So you think you can dance; In cooking, there are Master Chief, Hell's Kitchen In terms of adventure, it is impossible not to mention Amazing Race, Regarding business, the number program is The Apprentice program - with this program, students will learn a lot about business planning, teamwork, tournament resolve conflict; If anyone likes to start a business, Shark Tank is a program that will bring many unique ideas, presentation styles to sell ideas, and how to convince investors 16 The above reality shows are designed and choreographed to always enjoy the drama, attracting the attention of viewers in each episode, thus creating excitement and stimulating the students' ability to listen to English When watching for the best results, ideally not watch the subtitles, not try to translate each audible sentence into Vietnamese, try to guess the meaning through situations and contexts, if still not understand You can cheat by clicking on the sub box on youtube to display English subtitles automatically with 90% accuracy These practical programs will show students the most natural view of how native speakers use language to communicate in different contexts With a number of in-depth topics such as cooking, business, and fashion, they also supplement students with vocabulary on that topic visually and vividly, in addition to practical programs regardless of the name "Realistic" but all have clear scenarios, and there are many tricks to evoke strong emotions in viewers from love, love, support, to hate, disgust, resentment of all genres The above feelings are one of the "key hooks" - the main hook for students to always stick with the program In addition to the practical programs, the talks by famous speakers also give students a lot of useful knowledge not only for English listening practice but also knowledge of life, helping to improve themselves, learn more experiences and skills for students to improve their level - Select listening content appropriate for your level The more you listen the better your listening skill be enhanced; it is counterproductive when you choose to listen to a topic that is too difficult for your own level If you listen to the sounds forever but not understand for a long time, it will result such as depressed, even obsessed with English, especially for students with basic English proficiency or weak English For a 4-year-old native English-speaking child, no one would let him practice listening by giving him the peak hours CNN, or read Harry Potter to him, but instead chose simple, relevant content suitable for the level When listening to a content, the ideal way to develop listening comprehension skills is that students must understand 80% of the content Whether it is in the form of radio shows, podcasts, movies or TV shows, it shouldn't be too difficult If you listen to a content that only students understand about 60%, surely you will feel discouraged, bored to study and lose interest in listening If the listening content is 100% understood, but yawn and yawn short, lose concentration, it will also lead to bored learning and removal Try to find audio content that is appropriate for your level, not too easy, nor too difficult, aiming at 80% is ideal 17 To be able to choose the right listening content, it is necessary to know where your current level is The most common and most common English assessment standard is according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) Under this framework, English proficiency is divided into levels from low to high, including: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2: Council of Europe level Listening skills A1 Break – Through You can understand familiar words and phrases about yourself, your family, and concrete situations you know well A2 Waystage You can understand sentences about familiar topics if they contain high frequency vocabulary You can catch the main point in simple announcement You can understand the main points when listening to a native speaker if the topic is familiar This includes listening to radio or television You can understand lectures if the topic is familiar You can understand the news on television reasonably well You can understand extended speech, even when it is not clearly structured You can understand most television programmers B1 Threshold B2 Vantage C1 Effective Proficiency C2 Mastery You have no difficulty in understanding any kind of spoken language Table 3.1 Listening ability according to CEFR standard In English, tests such as TOEIC, TOEFL, and IELTS are carefully researched and developed to accurately assess a candidate's English ability and TOEIC, TOEFL, and IELTS scores are also converted clearly through the Common European Framework of Reference Test papers for these tests are available online, students can try and score themselves, and compare them with the following chart to see their current listening level Once you know where your level is, then students will easily find the listening content suitable for their level This is one way to improve your English listening skills slowly 18 but surely It will be a solid foundation for students to improve their own level - Listen, read and repeat This is one of the extremely effective techniques that anyone who is good at English knows and applies a lot This technique is very simple, as the name implies: Listen, read and repeat ● First, when listening to a content, try to listen, not translate into Vietnamese, try to understand the main points ● Then listen and reread the transcript (a transcript of the words spoken in the listening lesson) ● The last step in this technique is to read it again out loud When re-reading, please completely copy the voice of the speaker, each place of emphasis It sounds simple, but this is a very important process, when listening and rereading, the brain will combine the audible sound of the word with the letters of that word, this process helps us review known words, learn new words in sound form, and gradually convert more from passive vocabulary to active vocabulary In doing so, we have heard a hearing that incorporates multiple senses, hearing, reading, and speaking The neural connections in our English learning will greatly improve when done this technique regularly I give students a few suggestions for how to this technique in a fun and effective way: ● Hear and imitate from idols Do you have an idol actor, singer, speaker, or character (speak English)? If so, then it's great, imitating that character is a great inspiration to improve my English listening skills In the years 2006 - 2011, at that time Miley Cyrus was famous around the world with the Hannah Montana series, which was broadcast on Disney on March 24, 2006 The film tells the two-sided life of a high school girl, during the day Miley Stewart an ordinary schoolgirl, at night is an internationally famous pop singer Hannah Montana No one knows this secret except her family and two friends I decided to listen and imitate the tone and gestures of Miley Cinderella in Hanah Montana I downloaded movies, music programs with her, downloaded English subtitles, and started listening to them over and over, mimicking my idols' voices and lines Over that time, I am more confident speaking English and listening to English better I encourage students to use this approach as it will excite and attract them to learn English better It is easier to learn 19 something out of self-interest than it is to learn something you don't like or force ● Specter technique At the core of this technique you need a tape read with a native English voice, listening and mumbling to read out loud what he heard Try to copy the sound of every word as soon as you say it, as quickly as you can, you may not repeat completely at first, but okay, listen again, and the day when you hear the sound, try to repeat It's as fast and as similar as possible (if needed, you can use a transcript) This is like how we learn our mother tongue when we are young, quite difficult and takes a long time, but the effect is great - Listen anytime, anywhere To improve listening skills, students certainly need to listen a lot, actively listen, passively listen, anytime, anywhere Can be listened to through news, podcasts, songs, audiobooks, Let my ears be "flooded" in English This is called "passive listening", and this approach has at least two benefits: ● Help the ears get used to sound, stress, intonation As your ears get used to it, your listening skills will definitely improve ● Help students build vocabulary The more you listen, the more words you will know Knowing more, understanding more, and listening will increase Start listening to content that you feel like, then you can move on to many different topics In addition, students should also read many different documents to extend input, also background knowledge, this will help students improve their listening skills - Use podcasts This is a method that is not too unfamiliar to the students today Most students have telephones and computers, so this method can be applied anytime, anywhere At any time, students can open podcasts to listen to, providing unique features and a wealth of listening material, motivating students to listen to English and interact with native speakers language in authentic context In addition, the relevant length of the listening lessons is also an advantage students mention when studying with podcasts The - minute listening lessons provide information and vocabulary for students and are of moderate length to help students not feel tired and depressed when listening to everyday For listening skills, regular listening practice is essential, so podcasts are a great tool that can meet the everyday listening needs of students 20 Podcast is a concept formed from two pods in the Apple Ipod and broadcast (radio / broadcast) A podcast can be understood as an audio program, like a radio program, created by someone and then posted on the Internet for you to listen to live or download and listen through your phone or computer According to Stanley G., podcasts allow students to create and publish their own audio files, broadcast news, record lecturers' lectures as learning data, and support interview projects of student (Stanley G., 2016) More specifically, for language acquisition, Grytsyk NV believes that using podcasts to teach foreign language students facilitates teachers to vary their content and teaching methods (Grytsyk NV, 2015 ) Questions Feedback Totally Agree Normal / Disagree agree neutral I see hearing 3% 88% 6% 3% improvement after listening to podcasts develop English listening comprehension skills Totally disagree 0% 0% 3% 0% 0% 3% 6% 0% podcasts to 21 According to the results shown on the survey, the majority of students, after being exposed to podcasts in class, reported that their listening skills improved (88%) In addition, nearly 70% of students find motivation to learn English after practicing listening to podcasts Although the majority of students think that listening to English through podcasts has many advantages (easy to follow access, use, rich and reliable listening resources and suitable listening time for listeners to focus), some students still have difficulty understanding what speakers mean This is shown in the number 8% choose to agree and 81% of students choose neutral direction Most students (94%) after learning to listen to podcasts in class, agree that teachers should use podcasts to teach English listening comprehension skills The results above have shown that podcasts have an important influence on students' listening comprehension ability Listening to podcasts significantly improves the listening record of foreign language learners Podcasts give students the opportunity to respond positively to teachers 'lectures, thereby improving students' listening ability A number of exercises and assignments are designed from podcast listenings that promote students' creativity as well as hone their listening skills For example, when listening to podcasts, students have to use their imagination and have to build images of who is speaking and what is happening in the listening At the same time, I realized the need to highlight a few things to keep students in mind for improving their listening skills with podcasts: ● Students should spend 10-15 minutes a day listening to podcasts to improve their listening skills and build their vocabulary ● Students can stop the recording and look up words when they encounter a new word while listening It is not necessary to listen to the whole article to look up words ● Podcast is a free corpus with a variety of listening content, students can search and choose for themselves interesting and suitable topics to increase motivation and avoid boredom when listening ● When you have found a song with the right content, you don't just listen to it once, you should listen to it over and over While listening, focus on new words, phrases, and sentence patterns that the listener has just discovered This will help to leave an impression in the brain and improve listening and understanding skills Students were impressed by the benefits podcasts offer: the rich audio content increases knowledge and interest in learning, provides additional vocabulary and reinforces pronunciation First, students are exposed to new 22 words and new knowledge through activities and exercises designed in lessons with podcasts Students believe that along with improved English listening comprehension skills, the amount of vocabulary they learn has also increased significantly In addition, most students find that activities during class time with podcasts are closely related to real situations, which helps them practice and use more critical thinking creativity and problem solving skills For this reason, students find learning to listen to podcasts completely not easy but extremely enjoyable It is these situations that are both interesting and challenging that motivate students to improve and improve their English listening skills 23 CHAPTER 4: CONCLUSION Based on the results obtained and the scope of my knowledge, I give some conclusions and recommendations as follows: - For students in general and students majoring in English language in particular, the need to learn English is huge Most of them are for the purpose of learning, daily communication and applying to future work - Despite being aware of the importance of listening to English, most students have not invested properly in this subject Specifically, they lack motivation to study, have not spent time nor a timetable for practicing English listening skills This is the reason why they have studied English for many years but their hearing is still not developing - The school's teaching of listening skills has not met the needs of students Therefore, raising awareness of the important role of Listening skills in learning and communication needs to be emphasized by teachers In addition, it is necessary to change the mechanism, policy, proposal, assessment, and diversity of listening sources while making the listening - test so that students can be more active and active in learning to listen - At the same time, research also shows that to learn listening effectively, the optimal method is to increase study time and maintain study time in a regular and scientific way Therefore, supporting students to use Internet-connected computer labs or labs during self-study hours is also a good thing to to facilitate students in difficult circumstances practice listening skills for yourself Improving students' English speaking skills is not easy at all The difficulty is that it takes time to change a foreign language learning habit that has become outdated, no longer suitable in the new situation Moreover, to have a perfect skill also requires a sufficient amount of practice time, there must be close cooperation between teachers and learners It is even more important that learners' own motives, attitudes, and learning strategies make up that success 24 APPENDIX AND REFERENCE Appendix SURVEY FORM FOR DIFFICULTIES IN LEARNING LISTENING SKILLS OF MAJOR
