Overview In today’s competitive environment, service providers cannot risk any interruption in service. Finding a problem before it becomes a hard failure does more than just prevent loss of service, it affords service providers sufficient time to address the problem appropriately. With troubleshooting often posing a large, time-consuming expense, service providers have discovered new methods for nonintrusive test access of fiber circuits. A Value-Added Module (VAM) system equipped with monitor modules provides more flexibility and functionality in a variety of monitoring applications. Customer Premises Module Applications A customer premises VAM can be used as a demarcation point for subscribers requiring fiber feeds. The module slides into a fiber frame and fiber jumpers are subsequently installed from each to the network equipment. Equipped with separate ports for local testing, the module uses splitters to route a portion of the transmit and receive signal to a monitoring port. Technicians then test the signal routed to the port via an external test device. This allows technicians access to both directions of the signal without disrupting service to the customer. Dual Monitor Cross-Connect Applications The dual monitor module offers another economical method of providing nonintrusive access to fiber circuits. Dual monitor modules are used in cross-connect configurations in which the outside plant cables are terminated to standard bulkhead adapters and fiber optic terminal equipment cables are terminated at the rear of the monitor module. (See Figure 2.) When the outside plant bulkhead terminations on the front are cross-connected to the fiber optic terminal monitor module, access is gained to both the transmit and receive signals of the circuit and monitoring can be performed with no disruption to service. Figure 2 The OSP cable terminates on a standard connector module; FOT equipment terminates on the rear of the monitor module. Technicians connect the two by installing fiber patch cords between the connector module and the monitor module, completing the cross-connect.
