International candidates who hold the equivalent of an American bachelor’s degree are also encouraged to apply . college of nursing | 1 Admission Information Thank you for your interest in the college of nursing. We want to work with you to make the application process as manageable as possible. Here are some important tips about our application process: 1. Our application is self-managed. We require that you submit your completed application—with all supplemental materials—at the same time, in the same envelope. Please do not send transcripts, recommendations, etc., under separate cover. 2. Please do not use binders, covers, or plastic sleeves to send us your application. We need to make copies of it for the various committees that will review it. There is no need for fancy packaging—we are most impressed by strong academics, powerful personal statements, and amazing recommendations. 3. Speaking of recommendations—our doctoral and master’s programs require them. We do not provide, or require, special recommendation forms. We do, however, want professional and/or academic letters of recommendation typewritten and on letter- head. Be sure to give your recommender enough time to write the recommendation and have him or her give it to you in a sealed envelope and on institutional letterhead. Remember that most recommenders are very busy people. We suggest that you start this process early. 4. Use your personal statement to give us an honest representation of who you are, why you want to enter the program/specialty and pursue a career as an advanced practice nurse. We definitely want to be sure you can write, but we also want to make sure the program we offer is the best match for you as a potential graduate student. 5. Don’t take anything for granted. Read the instructions, visit our Web site, and double-check everything. Take charge of the process, get everything in by the deadline, and then anticipate the decision of the Admissions Committee. If you include a self- addressed, stamped postcard, we will return it to you to verify that we received your application. Our goal is to help you submit an outstanding application—so work with us, and together we can make it happen. We wish you the best. Office of Student Affairs and Admissions Your completed application must include the following: Application Deadlines It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all materials are in the Office of Student Affairs and Admissions by the appropriate deadline. All deadlines listed are “in-office” deadlines, not postmark deadlines. It is always to the candidate’s best advantage to apply early. Should any of the dates listed below fall on a weekend, the in-office deadline will be the next working day. Master’s and Advanced Certificate Programs Summer April 1 Fall July 1 (April 1 for international students) Spring December 1 Doctoral Programs Fall (only) January 15 2 | new york university 1. A completed and signed application. 2. A personal statement, with your name and U.S. Social Security number (if available) on each page. 3. A copy of your most recent résumé. 4. A copy of your RN licensure. 5. One (1) official transcript in a sealed envelope from each postsecondary school attended. These transcripts must be sent to you to be included in your completed application packet. (Do not open the transcripts when they arrive—we must receive them in sealed envelopes.) Please do not send transcripts under separate cover as this will greatly delay the processing of your application. Official transcripts that are stamped “issued to student,” but remain in sealed envelopes, are considered official by the Office of Student Affairs and Admissions. 6. A check or money order (please do not send cash) for the $75.00 nonreturnable application fee payable to “New York University.” All checks or money orders must be drawn on a U.S. bank and in U.S. dollars. Other forms of payment, including credit cards and bank transfers, are not acceptable. 7. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): required for applicants whose native language is not English. An unofficial copy of your latest TOEFL scores must be included with your completed application packet. Official scores are required before a decision can be rendered. Please arrange to have your official TOEFL scores sent to us before the deadline. Our TOEFL test code is 1617. 8. Graduate Record Examination (GRE): required for all doctoral applicants only. An unofficial copy of your latest GRE scores must be included with your completed application packet. Please arrange to have your official GRE scores sent to us before the appropriate deadline. The College of Nursing GRE test code is 2441. 9. Recommendation letters: required for our master’s and doctoral programs. Reference letters in support of master’s and advanced certificate study must be written by a master’s prepared nurse who provides direct super - vision. Reference letters in support of doctoral study must be written by doctorally prepared faculty members, and at least one should be from a doctorally prepared nurse. Please see the listings in the Directory of Graduate Programs section of this booklet for additional informa- tion on your program. Please have all recommendations sent to you in sealed envelopes to be forwarded, unopened, to our office with your completed application for admis- sion. Because all full-time doctoral candidates are auto- matically considered for the graduate and teaching assistantships (GA/TAs), the recommendations you sub- mit with your application for admission may also serve as your recommendations for the GA/TAs. 10. A postage-paid, self-addressed postcard: optional, for domestic applicants only. We will return it to you verifying receipt of your application. 11. All programs reserve the right to request recommenda- tions or other materials at a future date, if deemed necessary for admission or financial aid consideration. college of nursing | 3 Special Instructions for International Applicants www.nyu.edu/oiss The College of Nursing encourages applications from international students. We offer a diversity of programs that attract master’s and doctoral candidates from all over the world. 1. We encourage you to apply early. Because additional mailing time and processing are required for interna- tional credentials, you should have all application materials in our office by February 1 for the fall semester and by November 1 for the spring semester. 2. You must have the equivalent of an American bache- lor’s degree to be considered. Two (2) transcripts in the original language as well as two (2) English translations are required to be submitted with your application. If your academic credentials are not in English and/or are from a foreign school with a grading system not based on a 4.0 overall GPA, we strongly suggest that you obtain an evaluation and translation. This is a paid service available to you from Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE), and World Education Services (WES). We require evaluation reports that identify the United States equiva- lents of educational qualifications earned in other coun- tries, including subject-by-subject GPA and degree equivalence. Visit www.wes.org or www.ece.org for more information. 3. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is mandatory for all applicants whose native language is not English and who did not receive a bachelor’s degree at an English-speaking college or university. Include a copy of your TOEFL score report with your application. The TOEFL cannot be waived, and the official scores must be in our office by February 1 for the fall semester or by November 1 for the spring semester. The College of Nursing looks for a paper-based TOEFL score range of 550 to 600, a computer-based TOEFL score range of 230 to 250, or an Internet-based score range of 88 to 100 for consideration. Include a copy of your TOEFL score report with your application. The College of Nursing TOEFL test code is 1617. See the Web site at www.toefl.org for registration information. 4. Regardless of the TOEFL score, all accepted applicants whose native language is not English are required to take a placement examination, for an additional fee, at New York University’s American Language Institute (ALI) on arrival. Depending on your performance on this exami- nation, you may be required to take noncredit remedial English course work before or while taking regular aca- demic course work. Such remedial course work may lengthen the time and expense of graduate study and should therefore be taken into account by students and their funding sources. 5. The College of Nursing does not offer scholarship assistance to international students in master’s degree programs. Non-U.S. citizens seeking tuition assistance through loans should check the NYU Web site at www.nyu.edu/financial.aid/international.php for additional information on loan opportunities open to most international students. 6. In order to participate in the Graduate Nursing Program’s practicum components, you must hold a New York State Registered Nurse license. A. Apply to the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions, for Registered Professional Nurse licensure (www.op.nysed.gov/nurse.htm). • Download and submit Form 1, Application for Licensure (www.op.nysed.gov/nurseforms.htm). • Section 22 of this application asks for confirmation of your completion of an NYS-approved two-hour course in child abuse identification and reporting. One other requirement for New York licensure is a course in infection control for health care professionals, which is not necessary for comple- tion of the application, but would be requested from you by any New York institution you work with in the future. Through the experience of international student applicants in the past, we rec- ommend Nursing Spectrum’s Self-Study Module (www.nursing.com/ce) to be the most feasible way to complete these two New York licensure require- ments. The most affordable approach with Nursing Spectrum’s Self-Study Module would be to register for the Unlimited CE Program. B. Apply for verification of your education and licen- sure/registration credentials for the New York State Education Department with the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) (www.cgfns.org). • Download and apply for Credentials Verification Service for New York State (www.cgfns.org/sections/ programs/ces). Create an account with CGFNS in order to apply, pay, and monitor application status; verification of credentials takes a minimum of 180 days. Once verified, your credentials will be forwarded to and evaluated by the New York State Education Department as part of your licensure application. C. Upon processing of both applications, you will receive authorization to take the NCLEX exam, known as Authorization to Test (ATT). To register to take the NCLEX exam, set up a Web account for NCLEX testing with Pearson VUE (www.vue.com/nclex). In general, please allow six months for the entire licensure application process, with the CGFNS cre- dential verification application requiring the most time. You must complete the licensure process prior to beginning your graduate program. 7. In addition, you must have completed the two-part health clearance requirement: A. Illness/Immunization Documentation Form (one time only) This form requires immunization information (either date of immunization or titers/laboratory documentation of immunity) for the following: • Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) • Hepatitis B: three inoculations • Vari ce lla ti ter • Diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus (DPT): proof of immunization within the last 10 years • Meningococcal meningitis vaccine B B. Annual Health Assessment (yearly) This form requires information on the following: • Complete history and physical examination • PPD (Mantoux) status As a less expensive alternative, we strongly encourage you to have the above done in your home country. 4 | new york university Special Instructions for Nonmatriculated, Special, and Visiting Students This application may not be used to apply as a non- matriculated student, also known as nondegree, special, or visiting student. Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents seeking to take courses in the College of Nursing may take classes under this status. Nonmatric - ulating candidates can download and submit a nonmatriculated application from www.nyu.edu/ nursing/academicprograms/nondegree.html, the $75.00 application fee, and proof (an official transcript) of a bachelor’s degree. Minimum grade point averages may apply. Only candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing or an associate’s degree in nursing combined with a nonnursing bachelor’s degree are eligible for nonmatricu- lated status. Taking classes as a nonmatriculated student does not guarantee admission to degree status. The maximum number of allowable credits in this status is 18. Study Abroad The College of Nursing offers some study abroad opportunities. Graduate students may wish to add study abroad during their studies. In the past, our students have studied in programs at a wide range of locations, including the following: • International Community Health in South Africa • The HIV/AIDS Pandemic in Uganda • Nursing Issues and Trends in Chile and Ireland • Comparative Health Systems in Italy • Health Issues of Culturally Diverse Families: The Experience of HIV/AIDS in Ghana Program offerings change from year to year, and new cities and programs are always being added. For information about study abroad opportunities in the College of Nursing, please contact us: New York University College of Nursing International Programs 246 Greene Street New York, NY 10003-6677 Web si te : www.nyu.edu/nursing Program and Option Codes The Directory of Graduate Programs section (page 6) lists all of the available graduate programs and options in the College of Nursing. A short description and a program code are included with each of the programs. This four-letter program code must be entered on the application prescreening page. Some programs in the College of Nursing also have an option code. This three- letter code can be found under the appropriate listing. Applicants for matriculation must select only one particular program of study. You may apply to only one program in the College of Nursing. Additional Questions Where appropriate, the Directory of Graduate Programs section (page 6) lists department or program telephone numbers for your use. Should you have specific questions about a program, please feel free to contact the program directly. You have doctoral, master’s, or advanced certificate study of nursing as a career goal and have begun the process for admission to a program that will lead you through a challenging course of study—the culmination of which will be a master’s degree, an advanced certificate in a nursing specialty, or a Ph.D. There are many steps along the way to reaching your goal, one of the most important being the financing of your master’s/doctoral education. The College of Nursing at New York University is concerned with your need to understand all the policies and procedures for applying for financial aid. To that end, we have prepared this booklet to answer many of the questions you may have concerning the availability of financial aid and the application process. Several student loans are available through banks or lending institutions. In addition, if you are a New York State resident, you may be eligible for a Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) grant. Details concerning these programs and application procedures are outlined below. To apply for financial aid, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You may call 800-433-3243 to request an application or file the FAFSA electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Priority deadline date for submission of the FAFSA is March 1 preceding the September you will enroll or November 1 preceding the January you will enroll. Be sure to list New York University’s school code, 002785. General Information Federal Stafford Loans Borrowing Limits: Graduate and professional students in the Federal Stafford Loan program can borrow up to $18,500 annually between the subsidized and unsubsi- dized loans. You cannot receive more than $8,500 a year from the Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan. You may not borrow more than $138,500 (only $65,500 of which may be in subsidized Stafford loans) including any undergrad- uate loans you may have borrowed. Interest Rate: The interest rate is fixed at 6.8 percent. You are not responsible for the interest in the subsidized por- tion of the loan, nor do you begin repayment of any por- tion of the loan until six months after graduation. Financial Need: You must demonstrate financial need in order to qualify for a subsidized loan. Need is calculated as your cost of education minus your family contribution and all other financial aid resources. Your family contri- bution is determined when you file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Application Process: If you are eligible for a Federal Stafford Loan, you will receive a Master Promissory Note (MPN) from the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC). Complete the MPN, which is the application for the loan, and return it to HESC. If you do not receive a Master Promissory Note within four weeks of receiving your financial aid award letter, you should request one from HESC by calling 800-642-6243. If you are not borrowing through New York State, contact the University’s Office of Financial Aid. Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan: If you are not eligible for the full $8,500 Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan, you will receive the balance of your request from the Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan. Eligibility: You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident or hold an I-94 visa with the appropriate stamp. Private Loans Private Alternative Loans New York University is pleased to announce a loan program through Nellie Mae/Sallie Mae available exclu- sively for NYU students. Applicants must be referred by the Office of Financial Aid and must have no negative credit history. Repayment: Repayment begins six months after gradua- tion or cessation of enrollment and may take from four to 20 years, depending on total amount borrowed. Eligibility and Application Process: New York University will determine your potential eligibility for a Nellie Mae/Sallie Mae private loan upon determining your award package. If a suggested Nellie Mae/Sallie Mae loan appears on your award letter, you will shortly thereafter receive an application in the mail. If you wish to be con- sidered for this loan program, simply complete the appli- cation and return it with any necessary documentation to Nellie Mae/Sallie Mae. You will be notified directly by Nellie Mae/Sallie Mae if your loan is approved.
