According to BSRIA, we are the leading supplier of Structured Cabling solutions to the local market. KRONE dominates in the two major structured cabling markets, the ‘end to end’ total solutions market and the mix and match market. The high market acceptance of our superior product range has ensured that the KRONE market share is more than double our nearest rival. What’s more, BSRIA predicts that KRONE Australia will maintain its market leadership in 2001 and beyond. Despite Australian Bureau of Statistics figures reporting a decline in the income from Australian manufacture of IT&T products, KRONE Australia goes from strength to strength. If you are offered a KRONE copy module, we would like you to consider the following Q&A, ask the same questions of your supplier and match the responses with our own. Ask for manufacturer’s specifications, proof of product history, compliance with local and international standards, and availability of warranties. Q. How much do I pay for genuine KRONE products compared to the copies? A. Our Australian-made modules cost no more than the imported copy. Ask your vendor why inferior copy products are the same price as a genuine original - the locally produced KRONE product. Q. Does the copy comply with international and national standards? A. All our modules comply with the ACA compliance requirements and carry the ‘A-Tick’ mark (see separate story on page 10). Ask your vendor for proof of compliance. Q. What is the plating specification? A. All KRONE modules have 5 microns of silver on the contact for reliability and long life. Ask your vendor for the manufacturer’s specification for the copy he is supplying to you. Q. How many times can you re-terminate the module? A. All KRONE modules can be terminated in excess of 200 times, ensuring the longest product life possible. This benefit is also an indicator to the high level of engineering built into the product. Some copy products indicate up to 50 re-terminations but, again, ask your vendor for the manufacturer’s specifications. Q. To what standard does your proposed module comply? A. All KRONE modules are built to the stringent standards set by various bodies including the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO). Ask the supplier of the copy product about how they comply to standards. Q. Will your module support Cat 5, broadband services like DSL or the emerging Voice Over IP (VoIP) telephone protocol? A. BEWARE OF COPIES! by Peter Davis Sales and Marketing Manager KRONE Australia Q. What is the termination force required to terminate into the Insulation Displacement Connection (IDC) slot wires? A. The high level of engineering into all KRONE products ensures minimum termination force is required. This eliminates termination stress which, over time, relaxes, creating an open circuit. The high termination force required on copy products will create termination stress leading to open circuits. It also damages the contact point making re-terminations impossible. Q. What are my installation options? A. All KRONE modules are capable of mounting on our Profil™ or backmount frames. Copies are usually backmount only, thereby loosing the flexibility offered by our Profil™ system. Q. What advantage does the genuine Profil ™ system have over the copies? A. Profil™ is less expensive than copy backmount frames and provides an easier and safer method to mount modules. Modules can be removed without the use of a tool and hinge providing easy access when installing cables. The distribution frame has been engineered to be safer, eliminating the chance of injuries caused by the sharp edges of mounting frames. Copy products cannot offer the advantages of Profil™ mounting. Q. Where is your module manufactured? A. Nearly all KRONE module products and their mounting systems are made in our Berkeley Vale facility on the central coast of New South Wales, providing surety of supply and ongoing service and support to our customers. Q. How can I be assured of a quality product? A. We implement best practice procedures in every facet of our product design, development, testing, manufacturing and marketing. In 2000 we received two of the inaugural Excellence awards from Australian Electrical & Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (AEEMA) for Innovation through the Supply Chain and for In- house Laboratories. Our manufacturing facility is accredited to ISO9001 ensuring that every product leaving the plant meets stringent Australian and International standards. We are also certified to ISO14001 for our environmental management system. Ask your copy vendor what quality standards they adhere to. Q. What sort of Warranty am I entitled to with your module? A. All KRONE products attract the standard 12 months warranty. In addition, extended warranties for up to 20 years can be offered. Ask your copy vendor what extended warranties are available. Q. What additional advantages are available if I use genuine KRONE products? A. By using our product, contractors and end users are entitled to access to the KRONE countrywide technical support network. You also receive a guarantee that our complete range of accessories, mounting systems and tooling are fully compatible with each other. Contractors, through their membership of Club KRONE, also receive support including product and industry information, news of special promotions, help desk assistance and access to our website product information. How do you tell? Ensuring that you are constantly in communication with your trading partners, suppliers, government ministries - right down to the ‘person in the street’, has become a vital ingredient for successfully doing business in today’s marketplace. Loss of that communication can have disastrous results. KRONE has in place testing mechanisms for our TrueNET (Platinum Cat6T and Silver Cat5eT) and other Premis NET solutions (Gold Cat 6, and Bronze Cat5e) to ensure you maximise the potential of your network. Hand held testers, used by KRONE endorsed installers, are appropriate for measuring the electrical parameters of the cabling solutions. These are called passive testing devices. To really test the data-carrying capability of the infrastructure, you need to generate data at one end and measure how much is successfully received at the other. This is where KRONE provides the active testing expertise using our Vigilant Networks’ Big Tangerine and Netcom Smart bits active testing equipment. For TrueNet installations we provide a five-year warranty for the data throughput at zero bit error rate. To achieve this guarantee, the network must be installed by KRONE endorsed installers who, using passive equipment, test the electrical parameters of the network. As part of our TrueNet service, KRONE conducts random audits during the course of the implementation using our active equipment. These tests ensure the correct installation practices are in place and we can also assist the installer to identify the presence of any non- compliant devices or non-standard installations. The most advanced active product on the market, Big T, uses a Time Domain Reflectometer to generate pulses down the channel. This unit analyses input impedance in both the Frequency and Time domains. It is a diagnostic tool capable of highlighting both existing and potential problems in the channel caused by poorly matched components and imperfections in the actual cabling. Smartbits has the ability to transmit Ethernet packets - 10BaseT, 100BaseT or 1000BaseT - down to an installed link. It can determine if errors are occurring as a result of the physical characteristics of the installation. Active testing provides the best indication of the performance of the cabling and its ability to carry data signals without any loss. When the installation is up and running, KRONE comes in again and conducts active KRONE’s stringent on-site active testing of its TrueNet structured cabling systems ensures customers get optimised data throughput and network efficiency. ONGOING TRAINING A MUST It is a requirement that a KRONE endorsed installer should have 50 per cent of its data cablers attend and pass our certification courses. For more than 20 years, KRONE has had a presence on the various authorities and bodies that regulate the telecommunication industry standards. We are constantly updating our Master Cabler and Designer courses to the highest standards to ensure they meet the Telecommunications Industry system of Cabling Provider Rules (CPR). Certification is for two years and we recommend that all endorsed installers enrol new staff in our courses to ensure the company quota of 50 per cent of KRONE endorsed data cablers is maintained. Be warned! We must stringently adhere to regulatory requirements to provide the best result for our end user customers. If an endorsed installer falls behind its quota, or is found lacking in some way - and if we can’t devise a mutually satisfactory solution - unfortunately, we will have to withdraw endorsement from that organisation. O ZERO BIT ERROR RATE GUARANTEED 10  NETWORKnews T he A-Tick is a compliance mark developed by the Australian Communications Authority (ACA) for telecommunications equipment. It has been introduced to give consumers confidence that a telecommunications product meets the safety and technical standards set by the ACA. The A-Tick mark indicates that a product can legally be connected to an Australian telecom- munications network. The A-Tick label appears on a range of products including structured cabling infrastructure products, fixed and mobile phones, answering machines, facsimile machines and modems. The A-Tick is a protected symbol and can only be used in accordance with the conditions laid down by the ACA. WHO ADMINISTERS THE A-TICK? The ACA regulates the Australian com- munications industry, protects consumers and promotes fair competition, efficiency and technical excellence. An important part of the ACA’s role is to ensure that consumers are provided with a diverse range of telecommunications equipment that meets the safety and technical standards set by the authority. The ACA works closely with telecom- munications suppliers and the community to establish policies, procedures and regulations suited to the diverse and constantly evolving telecommunications industry and its consumers. WHAT PRODUCTS REQUIRE THE A-TICK? Telecommunications products must have an A- Tick or display the labels of previous labelling schemes such as the Telecom Authorisation or AUSTEL permit. Products without an A-Tick or the previously accepted labels may be unsafe and cause damage when connected to the network. It is a condition of the Cabling Licence and, for Registered Cablers under the Cabling Provider Rules (CPR), that all cable, cabling product and customer equipment such as customer switching systems, phones, external and internal modems and answering machines must meet the ACA’s Labelling Notice requirements. The A-Tick is part of those requirements. The A-Tick compliance label consists of two parts: the A-Tick logo and other information that identifies the manufacturer/importer. This latter identifier is usually the Australian Compliance Number, such as KRONE’s N355, or it can be the organisation’s business name or trademark on the product. Customer Cabling is a separate issue and, under the ACA’s Labelling Notice, at least every 2 metres on the sheath, the company identifier and the product identifier must be shown. KRONE’s customer cabling and related customer equipment including cables, patch cords, plugs, sockets, modules and connectors fall under Category A22 of the ACA Labelling Notice and therefore comply with technical standard ACA-TS008-1997 (or AS/ACIF S008 as it will become) at compliance level 2. Rest assured, our Asia-Pacific R&D Test Laboratory located at our regional headquarters at Berkeley Vale on the New South Wales central coast conducts the necessary tests to ensure our products exceed TS008 requirements.
