Throughout 14 years teaching English at the upper secondary school, I have concluded the experience that if students participate excitedly in the warmup activities before going to the new lesson, the lesson will be considerably successful So, how can we make it possible to get suitable and effective warmup activities? This often takes a large amount of time when I plan each lesson Fully undersanding these difficulties, I choose this writing report “Some useful tips for getting students ready to start the lessons” Here I would like to share some experience to help teachers design and plan the lessons more effectively and less hard 1.2 Aims of the research: For the reasons given above, this research may give a clue to improve the quality of teaching and learning English, especially English 10 The research aim at: - Giving a more comprehensive outlook about English 10 - Providing basic knowledge about the role of the warm-up activites - Suggesting warm-up activites that can be applied for lessons in English 10 1.3 Objects of the research - Lessons in English 10 curriculum and the innovation of warm-up activities at Ba Dinh upper-secondary school are basic resources of this research - The tactics to teach in the Pre-stages - The types of exercises in each activity - The number of activites in each warm-up part - Students of grade 10 at Ba Dinh upper secondary school 1.4 Methods of the research - Reading reference books, visit some websites about engilsh teaching - Analyzing and discussing with other teachers - Applying in teaching, observing and drawing out experiences II CONTENT 2.1 Rationale: There is a fact that no one rolls out of bed and starts running a marathon without warming up Why? Because your muscles wouldn’t be warm enough for you to safely perform your best Similarly, failing to start a lesson with a warmup doesn’t allow students time to excercise their brains and start thinking about the topic Lesson warm – ups are important for helping students move into a learning frame of mind where they can effectively focus, participate and learn They enable students to shift into the thinking, reasoning and learning frame of mind they need to succeed in school 2.2 Factual situation: English 10 was re-introduced from the shool year 2006-2007 Teaching and learning English have to innovate to meet the demand After many years of applying the textbooks, especially English 10, I have found both advantages and disadvantages or difficulties for teachers and learners +Advantages: English 10 has 16 units talking about topics (You and me, Education, Community, Nature, Recreation and People and place) These topics are popular and suitable with the students’interest, knowledge and age. These themes not only elicit but also motivate and help students find information and discover more and more new nessessary things in genernal Moreover, the Language Focus parts are designed suitably with most students’ knowledge level + Disadvantages: There are some structures or idiom phrases that are fairely difficult for students For example, in Unit 8: Make ends meet, meet one's wish In addition, in some periods of speaking and writing skill, lessons are boringly designed, not suitable with the whole topics This causes difficulties for teachers in planning lessons Some of the inconsiderable grammar points aslo make it hard for the teachers to plan the lessons in general Realizing all of the advantages and disadvantages of the textbook English10, I together with many English teachers at Ba Dinh upper secondary school have to take it into considaration before planning each teaching lesson And this research aslo aims at promoting advantages and reducing disadvantages in teaching English in general and English10 in particular 2.3 Warm-up activities a What are warm-up activities? Warm-up activities are short-term working activities (about to minutes) which are used to “break the iceberg” and "warm" the learning atmostphere up right from the beginning of the lesson These activities are often simple but interesting enough to catch students’ attention and motivate them to learn the forein language effectively during the lesson b The purpose of warm-up activites in schools: Instead of starting the lesson usually by checking up the old lesson, teachers can use a variety of warm-up activites for different purposes There are three main purposes when using these activities: * Warm up to start the lesson * Warm up to encourage and motivate the students to speak right from the beginning of the lesson * Warm up to lead in c Rules when using warm-up activities: - The teachers have to prepare carefully before the teaching period This means the teachers must know the aims and the procedure clearly - Activities must be short, simple - Activities should be interesting, exciting - Activities should be based on students’ ability - Activities should be various in order not to make the students bored 2.4 Analysis of the results of the survey on the effect of warm-up activites with students in grade 10 at Ba Dinh upper secondary school: To find out how effective the warm-up activities are for teaching and learning, I conducted a small survey from students in class 10Pand 10H Basing on the results, I have more encouragement to write this report According to the results of the survey, 90% of students support the warmup activities and more than 80% realize that these activities bring them the excitement and good mood before learning the new lesson Approximately 5% left are in favour of checking old lesson as tradition or like other activities Thus, it is clear that warm-up activities have brought remarkable effects to learners The students feel the lesson more meaningful and interesting They find English more interesting than other subjects which get started by checking up the previous lesson Table of results of the survey: Q1 10,3% 87,7% 0% 0% A B C D Q2 0% 0% 0% 100% Q3 14,6% 30% 40% 15,4% Q4 8,5% 69,5% 20% 2% Q5 46% 52% 2% 0% Q6 60% 20,7% 15% 4,3% 2.5 Some warm- up activities that have successfully been applied for teaching English 10 at Ba Dinh upper- secondary school Here I present some suggested warm-up activities that I have applied in the pre-stages and and got relatively satisfied results from my students Find the lie Unit 3: People Background Part B.Speaking Give each student a small piece of paper Tell them to write three pieces of information about themselves on the piece of paper Two of these bits of information must be true, one is a lie - My name is Lan (True) - I am married (False) - I was born in 2005 (True) Tell the students to stand up and to hold their pieces of paper in front of them They should walk around the classroom, read the information about people and see if they can guess which statement is a lie Word LightningUnit 4: Special education Part C Listening This is a fast-paced activity Teacher chooses a common letter of the alphabet (letter P) , write it on the board, and give students two minutes to shout out as many words as they can that begin with that letter : photo, photograph, photography, photographic, photogenic, passion, picture , photographer, It’s often a good idea to a short example with your students when you introduce this game to ensure that they all understand how to play Ball PassUnit5: Technology and you Part A Reading This quick and easy game gives every student a chance to practice their speaking As the name would imply, students pass the ball around to each other, with the thrower asking a question and the catcher answering it I ask the first question“ Do you have a computer?” and have the students continue the chain until everyone has asked and answered at least one question related to the topic “ technology and you” Pass the sound Unit 6: An excursion Part E Language focus All the students stand in a circle One person chooses a short, sharp sound ( /ɜ: / ) , then putting his/her hands together points to the person next to them and makes the sound The next person puts their hands together, points to the person next to them and makes the sound Pass the sound around the whole circle Then tell the students then can change the direction of the sound by pointing to someone across the circle or sending the sound back to the person who gave it to them This game needs to be played at a fast speed Guess the pictureUnit 9: Undersea World Part A Reading One person comes to the front and starts to draw a picture(about a sea animal ) The students must try to guess what the picture is before the person has finished drawing it The person who guesses correctly comes to the front to draw another picture Make the longest words.Unit 11: National parks Part C Listening Write a topical target word vertically down the board “PARK” In twos or threes, students attemp to come up with the longest word that begins with each letter Give teams a point per word and a bonus point for the longest Polluted, abandoned, recognise, kilometres, 2.6 Results after applying the research in teaching With the method of applying warm-up activities as shown above I have found the lessons more vibrant and lively Students are interested in participating in the study voluntarily Most children including those who are weak pay more attention, be attracted to all activities, acquire knowledge teachers provide much better and easier Many students who were shy to speak in class are now more confident in communication Students are keen to learn the English language particularly in the pre-stages Many students learn more excitingly and lively Therefore, the results of the subject study have a considerable improvement The results are as follows: Thanks to new methods of teaching in general and the various, interesting, useful warm-up activites I have applied in teaching English 10 in particular, the average quality of the second semester of classes that I take charge in school year 2020-2021 has been significantly improved: Class 10P 10H Total sizes 41 34 75 Exellent-Good 14 34,1% 10 29,4% 24 32% Average 24 58,5% 20 58,8% 44 58,7% Weak (bad) 7,4% 11,8% 9,3% III.CONCLUSION 3.1 Conclusion: In conclusion, warm-up activities are extremely essential since they almost decide the success of a teaching lesson Once the students are attracted to the beginning of the lesson, they are motivated to pay more attention to the next stages, as a result, they actively participate in the lesson and have passion for English That is why most of my students always look forward to take part in each English lessons The need of use of warm-up activities and some suggestions for teaching English 10 have been mentioned and highlighted in this research The topic of the my research is not really new but I myself have tried a lot not to follow the familiar ways of the other alternative research sources by choosing the simplest and the most effective suggestions which are suitable for the 10th grade in reality Due to the limit of my experience, the content of the experience has not given a variety of the warm-up activities for different purposes However, hopefully my shared experience can be useful for English teachers and contribute somewhat to improve the factual situation of teaching and learning English in upper secondary school programs not only grade 10 3.2.Recommendation: 3.2.1.For teachers: To achieve the best effective method in teaching English, teachers should have creativity, enthusiasm and love for the job they are teaching Thus, inorder to use teaching techniques appropriately to inspire students to learn English, each teacher should constantly explore, and learn experiences from colleagues, and in books In addition, teachers need to create a favorable environment for students to practice communicating in every English lesson 3.2.2 For school management committee: I would like the Department of Thanh Hoa Education and Training to expand attending scientific conferences to discuss the teaching and learning experience, organize annual training for teachers to improve their knowledge of access to new teaching methods so that they can apply in teaching to get more success Above are some suggested warm-up activities in English 10 that I have used and found it very effective I would like to receive contribution from teachers and colleagues to help my theme better in the teaching process I sincerely thankyou!
