The name of The creative teaching experience: SOME HELPFUL SKILLS FOR

STUDENTS TO STUDY ENGLISH EFFECTIVELY

I The reason for choosing the subject

In learning English, all learners want to speak it fluently, If so they must master the four skills such as reading, writing, listening and speaking, however, they always find it difficult to speak, to write or to listen even a statement or a phrase in English In high school, most students cannot speak English although they understand what a word or a sentence means They can’t write a complete sentence either Moreover, a student who graduated from high school could not find a job only because they could not answer the questions “How do you do? what’s your qualification? Or What salary do you want to get? ”in an interview

As a result, it is necessary for our teachers to study some effective methods to help students learning English effectively in class or out of class so that they can communicate in real life

In a word, to give students helpful skills to learn English effectively is one

of the topics that I’ve been attracted for a long time because I think that it’s useful for students not only at class but also on their own

That is the reason why I choose this topic

II The advantages and the disadvantages

1)Advantages

 The Headmaster always supports and helps the teachers with physical materials

 Some students are interested in learning English

 Teachers are always enthusiastic in teaching

 Getting much valuable experience from colleagues and reference books

2)Disadvantages

 Students’ capacity is much limited and of different levels Some of them are quite deficient in the base of learning English

 Some students pronounce habitually wrongly

BM03-TMSKKN

Trang 5

 Students are lacking in vocabulary and structures.

 The majority of students are lacking in self – confidence to present ideas, perform sentences before the others

3) Statistics

At the beginning of the school year (2010-2011), our center had about 22%

of the grade 10 students that couldn’t read English correctly and about 64% of them couldn’t speak out a complete sentence

III The content

1 Logical base

Of all the thousands of languages in the world, English is one of the most difficult to learn but it is important for people who can use it

It is true that English is the most popular language in the world We can communicate in every part of the world if we know English Billions of people on this earth are crazy to improve their Spoken English

2 Some helpful skills for students to study English effectively:

It sounds simple doesn't it? But over the last ten (plus) years I've taught lots

of students who say they want to learn English, but really they just want to "know" English They have little or no intention of actually learning it I ask them it’s simply to start soon or they never finish Yes, simply start!

I often tell them If they don't start, they'll never finish, and the longer they put it off, the more likely they are to give up

So I urge them to start!

To find an English class

To find some English learning software or books

To join an English learning forum

To begin learning the English alphabet (ABC) and numbers (123)

To learn the vocabulary for their hobbies or interests

To do something or to do anything

Trang 6

Once having started – not stopping.

No matter what the reason is that they are learning English, they want to be sure that they learn it quickly and effectively as well Whether they are learning English

in a class, on their own, or with language teaching software, there are certain things that they can do to make sure that they learn the language effectively So, here are a few skills or tips to keep in mind that will help them on their journey towards learning the English language

Being Sure they WANT to Learn

One of the first tips that can help them out if they want to know how to learn English effectively is to make sure that they really want to learn this language If they really don’t want to learn, there is no book, no class, and no tips that are going

to make it simpler for them Make sure that they ask themselves whether they really want to learn English If not, then it’s not for them However, a real desire to learn the language can go a long way

Learning to Learn

Students never finish learning, nor do they ever finish learning how to learn

They should think and work independently not to depend only on their teacher or trainer

They ought to develop a love of learning and have a vision that motivates them They should participate in any related activities, help others to learn

They must know to learn from their mistakes and failures

They should keep a sense of humour and never to give up!

Figuring Out What Motivates them

If they want to learn English effectively, they need to figure out what their motivation is Why do they want to learn English so badly? Do they want to improve their current learning, get a better job, attend university, or enjoy their lives in an English speaking country? No matter the reason they are motivated to learn this language, they need to understand what motivates them so they can use it

as encouragement as they learn the language

Deciding On Some Goals

It is very important that they have goals in mind if they want to know how to learn English effectively

Setting goals will help them to know where they want to be and it will motivate them to actually see their progress as they learn the language as well Decide what their goals are, whether they want to improve their vocabulary, pronunciation, or even if they want to comprehend when they’re listening better Once they know their goals, they will be sure that they are working to achieve them

Taking Responsibility For One’s Own Learning

Trang 7

It's normal for students to expect one’s teacher to teach him/her, but that's not how language acquisition works One’s English teacher is really there to present English to him/her, in all its glory, but he/she has to learn it I am always very clear with my students In the first lesson I tell them, "I am not here to teach you English", and once they have got over the shock I explain, "I am here to help you learn it"

So, what is the difference? Well, once they've been presented with new English words or vocabulary, it's up to them to use them, review what they've learnt, even play with it It's the only way they'll get it to actually stick in their brain, start to make sense of the structure of English and develop a feeling for the language

Being Sure to Practice

Practicing is probably one of the most important tips if they want to know how to learn English effectively The more they practice their English skills, the better they will become at it they can practice by reading English, by writing emails and letters, by listening to television or the radio in English, or even by taking time to speak to other people who speak the English language The more they practice, the fewer mistakes they’ll end up making over time, and they’ll become more effective with their English skills

Of course, reading is one area a student in how to learn English well, but this

is something he/she can learn on his/her own quite effectively, outside of the classroom or even around other people He/She just Keeps a dictionary with him/her so that he/she can look up unfamiliar words Then, he/she can write these words down in a notebook and use them in a conversation so that when he/she try

to use them again, they will come to him/her much more easily

Newspapers, magazines and books all help him/her learn English well If he/she’s just starting out, try reading children's books to start This is especially helpful for people just starting to learn English There are some books specifically written for people just starting to learn English; the words are quite simple and yet effective enough that if he/she use them, you can learn to speak simple English quite quickly

If his/her English is more advanced, he/she can try reading from magazines books and newspapers With these sources, English is more difficult, but they will challenge him/her if his/her English is advanced enough that he/she needs more interesting things to read

When he/she first begin to read English, I ask them not to try to understand every word Instead, simply try to get a general idea of what he/she is reading; other words in the sentence will help him/her do this If he/she doesn’t understand the first time he/she reads something, he/she can always go back later and use his/her dictionary to look up the words he/she doesn't quite know

Another idea in how to learn English well is with writing When a student writes, he/she can practice his/her English as effectively as he/she does when he/she reads, only more so This is because he/she reinforces his/her understanding

of the language by writing it, which is a physical movement For best practice, I advise him/her to write something every day in English, even if it's a letter to a

Trang 8

friend, or a simple message He/she can also keep a diary, and use his/her English skills to write down what happened to him/her during his/her day And that he/she just starts with simple sentences at first and as he/she gets better, makes sentences longer and more complicated

The student can also use the Internet this way, because the Internet will let him/her

"talk" with other people simply by writing He/she can visit chat rooms, or write a blog All of these things help him/her learn English through writing When he/she writes, he/she can also take another look at words he/she has learned in the past, and use them in sentences to make sure he/she knows them well

One of the best ways in regard to how to learn English well is to speak One must Speak as much as he/she can in English, even though he/she may be uncomfortable at first Pronunciaction with a whole series of activities to practise individual sounds, minimal pairs, tongue-twisters and dictation is probably the best way to improve his/her English quickly He/she can listen to sample dialogues from everyday situations and get the chance to practise and they can help him/her improve his/her language as well As he/she practices, his/her English will improve

The student should surround himself/herself with English- speaking people every day so that he/she has no choice but to learn the language This will also help him/ her begin to think in English, which in turn will improve his/her speaking and other English language skills As he/she gets better, he/she willl no longer have to translate from his/her language to English or vice versa as he/she speaks Even if he/she is not sure, he/she can use sentences that sound right to him/her These are most often the right ones to use; if his/her English is not quite right sometimes, and that he/she shouldn't worry His/her English-speaking friends will help him/her and correct him/her if he/she asks them to And he/she shouldn't worry about being embarrassed; his/her English-speaking friends will understand that he/she is doing his/her best to speak their language, which is quite an accomplishment For example, he/she can find English speaking people on the internet, look for people with the same interests as him/her to get development in natural friendships based

on his/her hobbies etc.Eventually he/she will make friends and they will be much more likely to give him/her correction/guidance.He/she can also join an English club or conversation group The atmosfhere is friendly and fun here Or he/she can join in voive chat rooms on internet as well

And listening is also one of the most skills a student needs when we speak about how to learn English well If the student is in a country that speaks mostly English, of course he/she is going to be listening to it all day long In turn, this is going to help him/her learn to speak the language effectively, because he/she will learn to adapt to the speech and language around him/her He/she can then turn this into written language skills as well; oftentimes, listening to everyday English conversations categorized from easy to difficult is the best way to learn If the student is a silent listener at first, he/she can then gain his/her confidence and begin

to speak it when he/she feels that he/she understands it well

Of course, simply watching English-speaking television or listening to music and main news stories in Real Audio format along with well-illustrated text versions in

Trang 9

the English language is also going to help him/her learn It is really good to listen

to a collection of authentic listening passages at three levels All they will also help him/her learn English well, get pronunciation correct and speech patterns down the right way as well

Finally, we must remember that everyone will understand that someone is learning

to speak English and is likely to be shy when he/she tries it at first This is not a problem If he/she doesn't start, he/she will never learn, so he/she ought to give it a try; even though the first time might be hard, the next will be easier, and the next even easier, and so on The more he/she speaks English, the better he/she'll become, and that he/she isn’t afraid, and that he/she should speak out, and pretty soon, he/she'll be speaking English easily and will wonder what he/she were ever worried about

Talking to Onerself

Talking to oneself is no longer the first sign of madness - it's the first sign of excellence

"Self-talk" can help someone who learns English becomes more fluent And the great thing is – he/she can do it anywhere: in the bath, in the street, while he/she’s taking the dog for a walk As long as he/she tries to put a regular time aside every day when he/she can talk to himself/herself in English Talk about what he/she did yesterday, what he/she is doing, about interesting things which have happened to him/her and the things he/she’s planning to do in the future

Speaking without Fear

The biggest problem most people face in learning a new language is their own fear They worry that they won’t say things correctly or that they will look stupid so they don’t talk at all I always tell my students not to do this The fastest way to learn anything is to do it – again and again until they get it right Like anything, learning English requires practice They mustn’t let a little fear stop them from getting what they want

I suggest them

To speak more slowly (not louder!)

To keep it simple Use common words For example, if they want to say cat, don't use the word feline

To use only basic sentence structures (subject/verb/object)

Not to worry about pronouns, instead use the names of people they are talking about

To use a lot of hand gestures "Do you mean up?" they raise up their hands to help the person understand the word

To use sound effects They may feel silly, but if they are trying to tell someone that something exploded, using the sound "Ka Boom!" will get their point across!

Trang 10

To read short stories out loud and try to see, say and hear the words to reinforce

their memory Record themself and play it back later.

Learning from One’s Own Mistakes

Students who learn languages all make mistakes, so they need to learn to accept them as a fact of life If anyone gives you an unnecessarily stressful time about making a mistake, remember they will have made just as many mistakes as you, if not more The question 'May I congratulate you on never having made a mistake in your life?' is a useful answer here Children learn to walk because they get up when they fall, not because they stay down This means that when practising our English,

we ourselves or others sometime have mistakes in speaking, we see those mistakes and next time we will correct ourselves from them

Surrounding Oneself with English

The absolute best way to learn English is to surround themselves with it They should take notes in English, put English books around their room, listen to English language radio broadcasts, watch English news, movies and television Speak English with their friends whenever they can The more English material that they have around them, the faster they will learn and the more likely it is that they will begin "thinking in English."

They should make friends with native English speakers

They take chance to learn about the cultures of English-speaking countries

They learn English by reading, listening, studying, and asking questions; practice what they learn by speaking and writing

They ought to dictation is an excellent way to improve their listening and spelling skills They should have a friend read a few paragraphs from a book or a newspaper and write down what they think they hear, then they compare what they have written with the actual text

If they can dream in English, this means that they have succeeded in becoming a fluent English speaker

Working on Vocabulary Development

No matter what language a student’s learning, a large vocabulary is going to be very important This is especially important when he/she is learning the English language One of the best ways to learn new vocabulary words is to start reading and he/she can also learn more by listening to the radio or watching television Playing word games and doing word puzzles can also help him/her out when he/she is trying to enhance his/her English vocabulary

Yes, it’s true

Linking a new word to a picture is a good way of remembering it For example: To learn the words about animals in Unit 10 of English 11 and English 12 To search for the word "rhinoceros, leopard, parrot, lizard so on " in Google Images and he/she'll find lots of pictures of rhinoceros, leopard, parrot, lizard
