Situation: Local Exchange Carriers (LECs) need to provide new services in areas where there are shortages of copper pairs in the distribution plant (F2) beyond existing Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) systems. In today's environment of reduced capital budgets (CAPEX), adding network capacity quickly and economically is most challenging where (1) the estimated demand for service does not justify a major cable, crossbox, or DLC installation. Or (2) an immediate service order response is needed. The ADC Alternative—micro-DLC Solutions ADC's PG-Flex Plus micro-DLC system meets the challenge by providing quick and economical distribution relief from central offices (CO) or DLC locations. The PG-Flex Plus micro-DLC is a 2 component system consisting of a Central Office Terminal (COT) and remote terminals (RTs). The COT supports an integrated (D4/TR-008) interface to a class 5 switch and is temperature hardened for deployment from Central Offices (COs), vaults (CEVs) or DLC locations. Line powered and environmentally hardened RTs deliver 6-channels over 1 copper pair or 24-channels over 2 copper pairs. Figure 2: PG-Flex plus COT in the DLC Relief for the Crowded Cabinet If the DLC cabinet full, the PG-Flex Plus Field Shelf, a smaller (96-channel) OSP hardened version of the COT, can be placed next to an existing DLC cabinet. The field shelf accepts a universal DS1 feed over existing T1, HDSL, HDSL2 or HDSL4 transmission and supports 6-channel and 24-channel line powered remotes. The field shelf also supports delivery of ADSL services. For example, the cost of adding 96-channels beyond an existing DLC can easily cost $50-$75K for a DLC installation, $10K for a new crossbox and $100K to add new cable. Figure 4: Conventional Approach New Construction Costs $160-$185 The ADC Alternative Using the PG-Flex Plus micro-DLC, adding 96-channels beyond an existing DLC costs less than $25K Figure 5: PG-Flex Plus Beyond the DLC ADC Telecommunications, Inc., P.O.
