Punctuation – Các Dấu Chấm Câu Tiếng Anh

Punctuation mark – Dấu Câu Use – Cách Sử Dụng

Capital letter – Chữ Hoa ◦ the first letter of a:

- sentence

- country, nationality, language

- religion

- person‟s name and title

- organization name

- trademark

- day, month

◦ the first letters of some words in the titles of books,

magazines, stories, poems, movies, art works, etc

◦ some letters in some abbreviations (Mrs., TV)

, Comma – Dấu phẩy ◦ in a sentence:

- between parts of a sentence - before and, or, and but beginning a clause - before and after a phrase that gives information - before an introductory word or phrase - to separate quoted speech ◦ at the end of each item in a list

Period – Dấu chấm ◦ at the end of a sentence

◦ after initials

◦ after an abbreviation ◦ after a number or letter at the beginning of each new item

of an outline or of a list arranged in a column ; Semicolon – Dấu chấm phẩy ◦ in a compound sentence, before a clause that does not begin with and, or, or but

◦ between items in a list when one or more of the items contains a

comma

: Colon - Dấu hai chấm ◦ in a sentence:

- before a statement - before a part of a compound sentence that explains more

about the main part

◦ before the items in a list or series ◦ following an introductory phrase ◦ in a title that has two parts, before the second part

? Question mark – Dấu hỏi ◦ at the end of a sentence that asks a question

place where letters have been left out (we‟re for we are, ‟night for good night)

◦ in a date, to show that the first part of the date is missing

(‟04 for 2004)

- Hyphen – Dấu gạch nối ◦ to combine two or more words into one word ◦ between a prefix and a proper noun

Dash – Dấu Gạch Ngang ◦ in a sentence:

- before and after a word or phrase that gives extra information - to replace a semicolon or colon in informal writing

“ ” Quotation marks – Dấy nháy kép ◦ to show words are a quotation and were written or spoken by someone else

◦ to show a word or phrase is being used in an unusual or

particular way

◦ for the titles of short works such as a poem, article,

or chapter of a book „ ‟ Single quotation marks –

Dấu nháy đơn ◦ to show a quotation within another quotation

◦ in areas such as psychology, to show a word or phrase is

being used in an unusual or particular way

( ) Parentheses – Dấu móc tròn (= ngoặc đơn) ◦ in a sentence, to give extra information

◦ around a number or letter before each item of a list in a

sentence or paragraph

[ ] Brackets – Dấu móc vng ◦ inside of parentheses, around extra information
