(1)(2)25 For years, make-up was used as a disguise to hide imperfections and
create an image of perfect beauty, as dictated by the fashion of the era.Women gave themselves a different, more or less artificial-looking face with which to appear in public Make-up was a clear indication of a person’s role, class and rank in society
Going back to Antiquity, the eyebrows and eyelids were stained with black pigments
Hebrew and Egyptian men and women lined their eyes with green or black kohl (malachite for the green and galena crystal for the
black).Women used a greasy, red-ochre based substance on their cheeks and lips to give themselves a fresher, more radiant appearance
The Greeks used powders and oils, which they blended with mineral and vegetable pigments, to create shades of white, red or black
A variety of other salves and unguents, made of chalk, flour and white ceruse (a lead derivative), were also widely
employed at the time.Antimony powder, charcoal and kohl were used on the eyelids, eyebrows and lashes
In the Middle Ages, the Church condemned physical beauty,
preferring the inner beauty of the soul It was said that God could not recognize his sheep beneath thick layers of make-up
Beauty was to return again later, with Catherine de Medicis who wore her make-up in the Italian style
Women suffered to be beautiful
The skin of the face, neck and bosom was whitened with mercury chloride which burnt the skin. The cheeks, chin and ears were reddened to make people look healthier
In the 17th and 18th centuries, "Les Précieuses", as high society French ladies of the time were called, began to wear make-up A pale complexion was the privilege of nobility (in contrast with the brown, swarthy faces of peasant folk) Noble women wore garnet-red, while wealthy commoners showed a preference for paler colours Courtesans wore a shocking shade of vermilion called madder-red.Veins were accentuated in blue, and beauty

(3)With the approach of the French Revolution came the trend for a more natural look
In the 1830’s "Romanticism" was the fashion.Women were expected to look diaphanous and languid and the skin very pale and heavily powdered
The 1880’s saw the return of rouge, although applied far more discretely than in the past
In the puritanical 19th century, make-up was regarded as improper and as something used solely by women of ill repute
It was in the 1920’s, with the introduction of the Garỗonne style, that make-up really grew in popularity.Women were independent, they cut their hair, lined their eyes with black pencil, wore rouge on their cheeks and painted their lips bright red, with "lip stick"
Then came the 1930’s, and the creation of the very first tinted foundations which followed the ever-changing trends of Hollywood fashion Make-up was becoming an increasingly sophisticated business
The 60s were the years of cinematic glamour The ideal woman was refined and sophisticated and the look disciplined and constructed
Graphic make-up enhanced the eyes and thick lines, eye-shadow and false eye-lashes were in fashion
The 70s was the era of techno-glamour Pastel colors and chromatic
contrasts A combination of Pre-Raphaelite purity and aggressive charm A celebration of colors, and make-up bags bursting with eye shadows,
lipsticks, blusher, mascara… The total make-up look
Then the 80s arrived and with them, the rich, lavish look Strong make-up and opulent, intense colors This was the new era of glamour, luxury, eccentricity and the ideal woman: bronzed beauties, television stars, body-building and the monokini Make-up was bright, lips were glossy and
pearly… make-up became fast and compact
The 90s was the era of inner beauty Charm was synonymous with personality and people were looking for character, not just beauty Transparent make-up and personal, individual choice was the trend… unique, custom-made products, for an la carte look Unadorned colors which followed the New Age minimalism
The year 2000… has begun with the rekindling of an old female passion:
(4)L'Occitane Make-Up Collection
Color first appeared in Provence, when millions of years ago, the angry elements transformed the earth of the Luberon hills into a palette of reds, yellows and browns. This was the origin of ochre, and with it came color
Inspired by the light and colors of the Provenỗal landscape, LOccitane Make-Up Collection offers a wide selection of shades and nuances for women to enhance their natural beauty
How to present the product range ?

(5)Matt, transparent, even, natural and velvety is how all women would like to describe their skin. And this is precisely the reason why enhancing the
complexion is an important, first-stage in the art of making-up.A wide variety of foundation textures, powders and blushers are available to help us achieve the desired effect : concealer, liquid foundation, powder foundation, compact powder and blush
Whether the texture be light or creamy, comfortable or long-lasting, foundation should always be chosen to match the skin’s natural coloring (carnation) and be adapted to skin type (normal, dry, etc.)
What is a foundation ?
A tinted, insoluble pigment-based product designed to smooth and enhance the carnation, conceal blemishes and accentuate or soften the features Foundation should always be perfectly adapted to individual skin type Foundation is available in the following textures :
• powder, • compact, • cream, • liquid
What is a powder ?
Powder is a light, fine-textured substance made of minute micro-particles, used to create an even complexion and conceal imperfections Powder enhances and "fixes" make-up and provides a smooth, matt finish A powder should never change the color of a foundation Some powders are formulated to correct skin coloring (green powder to conceal red complexions and broken veins). The terms best used to describe a powder are : sheer, light, invisible, smooth, light-enhancing, satin, matt or powdered finish
Recommendations
Some women dislike the word "foundation", which is often associated with a covering product that "suffocates" the skin If this is the case, try using alternative terms such as : tinted cream or moisturizer, which evoke a lighter texture Prefer the use of the
terms : "velvety finish", "extra-smooth effect" or "full finish" rather than "cover’’ or “covering".

(13)Complexion : Tips and advice
Foundation and concealer are the basic elements of any make-up.
Foundation
• Before any demonstration, check that your client uses a day cream If not, apply a day cream (moisturizing active care for normal skin, matifying cream-gel for oily skin, etc.) over the face, and shea butter on the lips.
• The color of foundation should respect the natural complexion and is applied to the forehead and cheeks (the face should be free of all make-up).
• Fluid foundation should be warmed in the palm of the hand for easier application Blend in well, for a transparent, even
complexion.
• Take particular care to blend in the foundation under the eyes
(especially in the case of small fine lines) spreading it evenly, to avoid “clogging” Then apply powder.
• Lighter shades brighten the complexion and give a
sophisticated look.Darker shades give a healthy, sun-kissed look.
• To improve the complexion and hide skin imperfections,
without the full covering effect of a foundation, mix a small amount of moisturizer with the foundation Apply generously to the face and neck, and quickly massage in Do not apply too much product around the eyebrows and under the eyes.
• For a perfect complexion finish, apply small touches of fluid foundation with a sponge applicator or with the fingers (to the inner and outer corners of the eyes, under the arches and wings of the nose).
• For a fresh, satin-smooth finish, not powder the face The foundation is all you need.

Concealer
• Can be applied before or after foundation.
• Used over the eyelids, it evens the eyelid before the application of eye make-up.
• Apply to the inner corner of the eye, moving down to where the wings of the nose start and blending in well under the eye,
brightens the eyes.
Powder
• For women who not wear a make-up base, take a brush and dust the face with a tanning powder, the “Sienna earth”
compact powder, or “Sienna” blusher, for a natural, golden glow. Or use a powder that matches your complexion.
• Let the foundation “settle” for two or three minutes before
applying the powder Only apply powder to the areas which are prone to shine, such as the chin, nose and forehead Remove all excess powder around the eyebrows and from fine facial hair using the powder brush.
• If the face is over-powdered and “chalky”, spray with a fine mist of water, taking care to avoid the eyes, or with a toner if this is in a spray format.
• To hide a double chin, use a powder with a darker shade, for a subtle camouflage effect.
• To soften and refine a wide nose with thick wings, lightly apply darker powder around each wing in an upwards direction. To shorten a long nose, apply a darker shade to the end of the
nose, between the nostrils.

(15)Complexion : Tips and advice
(continuation)
An oval face
This shape does not require any particular correction Outline the natural contours by applying “healthy glow” blusher to the
cheekbones For the evening, enhance the face by hollowing out the cheeks with a dark blusher that matches the complexion.
A square face
Apply blusher horizontally, from the nose to the temples Add a darker touch at the hair roots and on a prominent jaw bone, to round out the face.
A round face
Blusher should lengthen and slim down the face Apply in a triangle starting near the eye, and moving towards the temples Add a little dark blusher to the jaw bone and
(16)A long face
Apply blusher horizontally and on the cheekbones.
A triangular face, pointing downwards
Blusher is not essential If applied, it should be horizontal over the
cheekbones, from the nose towards the temples.
A hexagonal face
Make-up is applied as for a square face i.e blusher is horizontal, across the face However, to reduce the heaviness of the lower part of the face, apply a dark, matt blusher under the chin and blend in over the jawbone.
Complexion : Tips and advice
(17)• Always apply blusher in small quantities.
• During application, ask the client to smile, as this gives the face a more “healthy look” Depending on the shape of the face, the cheekbones will be located differently So blusher should be applied to the “bump” of the smile.
• You can also use two blushers simultaneously: a darker shade to camouflage and a light shade to enhance and brighten.
• If there is excess blusher or it is too dark or too strong, blend in well with a brush (so the hair lies flat) If there is still too much color, correct by applying transparent powder over the excess.
• For a coppery or tanned skin (or black skin), you can use “Sienna” blusher as a compact powder over the whole face, to
enhance its “healthy”, tanned look (acts as a sun powder) .
• Choose blusher according to lipstick color.
• For a really natural blusher look, choose a shade which closely resembles the color of your skin when you blush.
• Brown shades help to shape and sculpt the face.
• To soften a facial contour, apply blusher under the chin and move upwards.
• To reduce a prominent jawbone, apply blusher along the jawbone and blend in towards the cheeks.
• To hollow out the cheeks, apply blusher under the cheekbones and blend in towards the corners of the mouth.

The Eyes and Eyebrows
The eyebrows :
The eyebrows are a key feature which balance and frame the face Ideally, shaped like a comma, yet quite full and natural, the line of the eyebrows forms a gentle, sweeping curve, beginning at the top of the nose and ending on an imaginary diagonal line, which leads from the centre of the mouth to the outside edge of the eye.The ideal distance between the eyebrows is equivalent to the width of an eye
Making-up the eyes begins with the application of eyebrow pencil
Eyebrow pencil defines the line of the brows, conceals gaps, thickens thin brows or lengthens short brows
The eyes :
Never match blusher color with the color of the iris, to avoid “lackluster” eyes
Use an eyeliner, at least two shades of eye shadow and mascara as a final touch
Match eye shadow to the dominant color of the clothes

(24)25 Eyes : Tips and advice
Eyeshadows
• Use eyeshadow alone or by combining a light shade with a dark shade
• Apply eyeshadow with a brush, starting with the lighter shade Always blend in well after application
• Dark and pearly eyeshadow can be applied more evenly with a sponge applicator
• To avoid eye shadow from forming “wrinkles” (a ripple effect), powder around the eye contour with loose powder or colorless compact powder (or the same shade) to fix it in place
• To correct badly applied eyeshadow, dip a cotton bud in your foundation and gently apply around the eyelids
• For sparkling eyes, choose pure, refreshing shades, such as beige, iridescent colors, lilacs or purplish-reds
• When using an pastel eyeshadow, give eyes more emphasis by lining eyes with an eye pencil and/or mascara, to avoid overpowering other eye make-up
• Make-up should melt and blend into the face So avoid applying too much make-up around the eyes
• Lightly powder under the eyes, to fix “wandering” particles of
eyeshadow When eyes are made up, blend in the eyeshadow with a few brushstrokes (the brush you usually use)
• Dark shades mark or hollow out features, while light shades enhance and brighten eyes Take care with bright, seductive shades, as these tend to focus attention on the eyes and rarely give a natural look
(25)Eyes too close together
To move the eyes apart, use a light eye shadow in the inner corner of the eye and then apply a darker shade, starting from the middle of the eye and
blending outwards On the same area, line the hollow of the eye orbit with an eye pencil Then blend in Pluck the area where the eyebrows start, to increase the widening effect.
Eyes too far apart
To bring eyes closer together, apply the eye pencil, moving from the outer
corner to the inner corner, while
spreading out towards the nose Blend in Blend in a dark eye shadow in the
inner corner of the eye Apply a light-colored, bright eye shadow under the outer eyebrow arch The eyebrows can be brought closer together using a pencil.
Eyes which are too “straight”
Often a feature of long faces With a brush, apply a very dark eye shadow horizontally along the edges of the eyelashes, moving up a little towards
the outer edges of the face Using an eye shadow, bring the eyes outwards towards the temples Shape the eyebrows so they slightly arch upwards, then move down over two-thirds of the eye.
Round or protruding eyes
To open up the eyes, blend in a dark eye shadow over the moving part of the eyelid by spreading outwards,
avoiding the inner corner which should stay light in color Darken below the eyebrows in the outer corner, with a
bright eye shadow Pluck eyebrows, shaping them upwards if possible.
Eyes : Tips and advice
(26)Deep-set eyes
Apply a light eye shadow on the
moving part of the eye, to give volume. Then reduce the arch of the eyebrow using a dark pink or orange-colored eye shadow Reshape the eye orbit using a
medium shade and blend in Line eyes with a fine eye pencil. Lightly pluck eyebrows to widen the eyes and reshape by drawing them upwards.
Almond and slanting eyes
With almond eyes, emphasize the eye shape by drawing the eye pencil in an upwards direction Apply eye shadow, moving in the direction of the temples. Using an eye pencil, line the inner edge
of the eye Slanting eyes require the same type of make-up, but with greater blending Dividing the eyelid into two equal parts, apply a light shade to the area nearest the nose and a darker shade to the other, blending in well.
Eyes that slope downwards
Blend in a dark eye shadow from the middle of the moving part of the eyelid, and up towards the eyebrow Apply a light shade to the inner corner Line the eye with a pencil, starting from the middle of the eye and getting thicker and moving up towards the eyebrow (to raise the eye).
Eyes : Tips and advice
(27)Mascara
• Mascara is essential for enhancing the eyes, even if lashes are very long and thick If this is the case, only apply to the tips
• Apply with the eye half-closed by looking downwards and pulling lightly on the upper part of the eye
• If there is excess mascara, hold a tissue between the upper and lower lashes and blink several times You can also use an eyebrow brush
• If the eyebrows are very light, color the hairs with mascara, which acts as a dye
Eyebrow pencil
• Always sharpen your pencil before use
• To give a natural look to eyebrows with excess make-up, wipe a cotton bud over the eyebrow
• In the case of bushy eyebrows, shape and neaten with an eyebrow brush moistened with hair spray
• To hide slight skin imperfections, such as spots which are forming or have appeared (impossible to conceal), it is better to transform them into beauty spots using a dark brown eyebrow or eyeliner pencil
Eyeliner pencil
• If the pencil is too dry and sticks to the skin, you can soften the point by gently turning it on the back of the hand
• To fix the pencil, lightly powder around the edge of the lashes using a brush
Eyes : Tips and advice
(28)Lips
Lipstick is the final touch to any make-up and brings radiance to the face In addition, it protects lips against the harmful effects of the sun and cold weather.
Depending on the chosen color, you can give facial make-up a sophisticated look (red, garnet-red, all deep colors) or natural look (beige, light pink, transparent, all light colors).
Choose a lipstick shade that harmonizes with the other colors and style of your chosen make-up Light make-up needs a
darker shade and a golden-colored make-up, a lighter, luminous shade.
Always prepare the lips first, by applying foundation and powder before lipstick.
Lips can be reshaped with a lip liner pencil, taking care to outline right to the corners of the mouth Using a pencil allows you to easily correct any mistakes - simply remove any unwanted pencil lines with a cotton bud soaked in make-up remover.

darker lip pencil and lipstick for the thicker lip and a slightly lighter shade for the thinner lip
Lips : Tips and advice
(35)Minimal make-up
5-minute make-up
The minimum time required to look presentable at home or outdoors: - Start with the concealer stick A small stroke applied to each area to be
corrected and covered is enough - dark circles, inner corner of the eye and small skin imperfections - then blend in with the finger
2 - Apply the compact powder foundation (with the powder brush) To brighten the complexion, apply a little blusher or “Sienna earth” tanning powder on the cheeks and upper eyelids If no foundation is used, simply cover red areas of the nose and chin
3 - Apply a coat of brown or black mascara
4 - Apply a lip gloss, choosing a color that harmonizes with the rest of your make-up
10 minute make-up
It is the time needed to be perfectly groomed every day The difference between this and the minute make-up is the extra time required to apply make-up to the eyes and lips with more care
1 - Start with the concealer stick A small stroke applied to each area to be corrected and covered is enough - dark circles, inner corner of the eye and other small skin imperfections Blend in well with the fingers - Apply foundation for an even, luminous complexion Blend in well - Fix the concealer and foundation with a loose or compact powder - Draw in or shape eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil (natural colors
such as brown, etc.)
5 - Apply a light eye shadow over the eyelids and blend in well, starting from the edges of the lashes Apply a medium color eye shadow to the outer corner of the moving part of the eyelid
6 - Draw a line along the lashes with an eyeliner pencil (black or brown) Blend in well with a brush, to soften the line (you may use a very dark eye shadow instead of a pencil line)
7 - Apply one or two coats of mascara (brown, black, etc.) - Apply blusher

Differents types of beauty
Black women
Black or mixed race skin can sometimes be oily To achieve good make-up hold, avoid using a foundation which is too oily and fix and matify make-up with a compact powder
• Choose a foundation which is slightly lighter than the complexion, with a hint of apricot If a very dark skin has no major imperfections, simply apply powder over the face (a very dark shade)
• To give relief, hollow out the cheeks and wings of the nose with a dark brown blusher, if the skin is light enough However, if the complexion is very dark, apply a light blusher over the cheekbones near the eyes and on the bridge of the nose
• Give maximum emphasis to eyes, eyebrows and cheekbones and soften the appearance of full lips
• Enhance eyes by lining them along the base of the upper lashes and inside the lower eyelid Use a strong, sufficiently dark color over the moving part of the eyelid, to avoid the eyes from appearing too round The eye hollow is not prominent and can be emphasized with a black
pencil while the area under the eyebrow should be lightened
• The cheekbones are emphasized with a strong colored blusher near the eyes Dark red colors darken white skin, but bring brightness to black skin
• If your lips are full and if you want to reduce them, they can be covered with foundation and reshaped in a subtle, natural way, using a dark brown pencil Choose a browny-red shade which softens the strong curve of the lips and brings radiance Use a fuschia or orange shade on the lips, which harmonizes with the clothes

• The colors which best suit dark skin are deep reds, browny-reds and all shades of brown
Asiatic women
The Asian woman is blessed with a natural grace and sophistication This refinement can be emphasized
• Brighten the complexion with a light, luminous foundation Avoid ochre and pink shades
• Powder should be porcelain or colorless
• Apply blusher high on the cheekbones, towards the temples and only on the lower cheek for a particular “fashion” look, as this tends to widen the face The blusher should harmonize with the other colors and a pinky shade is preferable Stronger pinks are suitable for medium to dark skin and light pinks for paler skin Hollow out the cheeks by applying
“Sienna” blusher to the outer edges in a vertical direction • If you want to reduce the size of your nose, it can be refined
with a bistre colored make-up, applied from the eyebrows and moving down along the wings of the nose Enhance the nose with a white line along the bridge of the nose to its end, to bring it forward
• For a natural make-up look, apply a light color over the whole eyelid Then apply a medium color from the base of the lashes which covers
two-thirds of the eyelid
• If there are sufficient lashes, apply 2-3 coats of mascara If lashes are slightly longer, they can be curled
• The lip contour is outlined with a dark red pencil, with carefully defined corners The lipstick color should harmonize with eye make-up and clothes Most shades of red can be used for this type of face Pale colors are particularly suitable Reddy-browns or dark reds are more attractive than orangey-reds

• To open up and emphasize the eyes, line the eyes with an eyeliner pencil The line should simply follow the shape of the eye A thick line is drawn over the upper eyelid to cover it The line should be invisible when the eye is open The lower line is very fine, oblique under the line of the lower lashes and should leave the eyes at their outer edge, to enlarge the eyes as much as possible A light pencil can be applied inside this line, to the inner edge of the eye A dark make-up is applied above the eyelid fold and blended in a circular movement towards the eyebrow
Latin women
For a natural looking complexion, choose a yellow/orange shade of
foundation (such as bronze ochre) Take care with pink or overly orange shades of foundation Avoid using browns as this drains and dulls the face The same rules apply when choosing a powder It is important to add a touch of highly colored blusher to the cheekbones Shades of pink and not oranges or reds, are most suitable
• For eye make-up, add touches of color here and there rather than all over Avoid old-fashioned colors such as fuschia Choose richer, darker colors such as purplish-reds, plum, deep pink and pink, terracotta
browns and purples, midnight blue and green Pearly white, gray-brown and sandy shades will dull the eyes
• Dark colored lipstick will always give lips a natural, harmonious look Softer tones such as pinky-beige and neutral brown, are also suitable However, colors which are too bright, such as oranges and coral pinks, should be avoided
• Eyes well-defined with a black liner always give a seductive look
However, take care not to apply too much make-up to the mouth, or you will end up with an overpowering “evening” or “haute couture” look • Never darken or lighten thick eyebrows It is best to leave them as they

(44)Make-Up : Useful Sales Techniques
The "Open-Question" approach :
“Are you familiar with L’Occitane Make-Up Products ?’’, “Do you know our make-up range ?’’ (if she does, ask her which product she knows and offer her complementary products Otherwise, give useful tips and
technique).
“What style of make-up you feel suits you best ?’’ “What colours you prefer ?’’.
“How much time you spend putting on your make-up ?’’
If she shows any signs of objection, reformulate the question or ask a new question :
“I don’t have the time to put on make-up !’’
“Of course, I quite understand, but how much time you have?’’ or “I don’t know which products to choose.’’ (meaning “show me’’)
“What product you use at the moment’’ or “What are your most attractive features ?’’
Whatever the situation, you must always remember to reformulate your question or ask a new question before making a suggestion If your customer doesn’t want a full demonstration, try the
products out on her hand, explaining product formula and effect as you go Tell her that our products are not tested on animals and explain her the easy-to-apply and play sides of make-up (talk about colours, trends and feminity) Settle an appointment when she can come back, at a quiet
moment, and be made-up
Make sure you offer her a product sample pack (includes a make-up brush and sponge applicator) and a brochure
To end the conversation, suggest a positive alternative. this technique is redoubtable !
“Do you prefer the Agate or Alexandrite lipstick ?’’
