Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B C, or D on, your answer sheer to

indicate the correct answer to each of the questions

All animals feed their young Beluga whale mothers, for example, nurse their calves for

some twenty months, until they are about to give birth again and their young are able to find

their own food The behavior of feeding of the young is built into the reproductive system It is

a nonelective part of parental care and the defining feature of a mammal, the most important

thing that mammals whether marsupials, platypuses, spiny anteaters, or placental mammals

have in common

But not all animal parents, even those that tend their offspring to the point of hatching or

birth, feed their young Most egg-guarding fish not, for the simple reason that their young are

so much smaller than the parents and eat food that is also much smaller than the food eaten by

adults In reptiles, the crocodile mother protects her young after they have hatched and takes

them down to the water, where they will find food, but she does not actually feed them Few

insects feed their young after hatching, but some make other arrangement,

provisioning

their

cells and nests with caterpillars and spiders that they have paralyzed with their venom and

stored in a state of suspended animation so that their larvae might have a supply of fresh food

when they hatch

For animals other than mammals, then, feeding is not intrinsic to parental care.

Animals add it to their reproductive strategies to give them an

edge

in their lifelong quest for

descendants The most vulnerable moment in any animal's life is when it first finds itself

completely on its own, when it must forage and fend for itself Feeding postpones that moment

until a young animal has grown to such a size that

it

is better able to cope

Young that are fed by their parents become nutritionally independent at a much greater

fraction of their full adult size And in the meantime those young are

shielded

against the

vagaries of fluctuating of difficult-to-find supplies Once a species does take the step of feeding

its young, the young become totally dependent on the extra effort If both parents are removed,

the young generally not survive

Read the following passage and mark the correct answer to each of the questions from 22 to 26

When another old cave is discovered in the south of France, it is not unusual news Rather, it is an

ordinary event Such discoveries are so frequent these days that hardly anybody pays heed to them

However, when the Lascaux cave complex was discovered in 1940, the world was amazed Painted

directly on its walls were hundreds of scenes showing how people lived thousands of years ago The

scenes show people hunting animals, such as bison or wild cats Other images depict birds and, most

noticeably, horses, which appear in more than 300 wall images, by far outnumbering all other animals

Early artists drawing these animals accomplished a monumental and difficult task Theydid not limit

themselves to the easily accessible walls but carried their painting materials to spaces that required

climbing steep walls or crawling into narrow passages in the Lascaux complex

Unfortunately, the paintings have been exposed to the destructive action of water and temperature

changes, which easily wear the images away Because the Lascaux caves have many entrances, air movement has also damaged the images inside

Although they are not out in the open air, where natural light would have destroyed them long ago,

many of the images have been deteriorated and are barely recognizable To prevent further damage, the

site was closed to tourists in 1963, 23 years after it was discovered Question 22: Which title best summarizes the main idea of the passage?

A Hidden prehistoric paintings B Wild animals in art

C Exploring caves respectfully D Determining the age of French caves

Question 23: The phrase pays heed to

in the passage is closest in meaning to

A buys B watches C notices D discovers

Question 24: Why was painting inside the Lascaux cave complex a difficult task?

A Painting materials were hard to find B Many painting spaces were difficult to reach

C The caves were full of wild animals D It was completely dark inside

What is commonly called pepper in reality comes from two very different families of plants Black

and white pepper both come from the fruit of the Piper nigrum

, a vine with fruits called peppercorns

The peppercorns turnfrom green to red as they ripen and finally blacken as they dry out The dried-out

peppercorns are ground to obtain black pepper White pepper, which has a more subtle flavour than

black pepper, comes from the same peppercorns as black pepper To obtain white pepper, the outer hull

of the peppercorn, the pericarp, is removed before the peppercorn is ground Red and green pepper, on

the other hand, come from a completely different family from black and white pepper Red and green

peppers are from the genus Capsicum

Plants of this type generally have tiny white flowers and fruit

which can be any of a number of colours, shapes and sizes These peppers range in flavour from very

mild and sweet to the most incredibly burning taste imaginable Bell peppers are the most mild, while

habanros are the most burning

Christopher Columbus is responsible for the present-day confusion over what pepper is The Piper

nigrum

variety of pepper was highly valued for centuries, and high demand for pepper by Europeans

was a major cause of the fifteen-century push to locate ocean routes to the spice-growing regions of

Asia When Columbus arrived in the New World in 1492, he was particularly interested in finding

black pepper because of the high price it would command in Europe Columbus came across plants

from the Capsicum family in use among people of the New World, and he incorrectly identified them

as relatives of black pepper Columbus introduced the spicy Capsicum

chili peppers to Europeans on

his return from the 1492 voyage, and traders later spread them to Asia and Africa These Capsicum

peppers have continued to be called peppers in spite of the fact that they are not related to the black and

white pepper of the Piper nigrum

family

Amelia Earhart was born in Kansas in 1897 Thirty one years later, she received a phone call that would change her life She was invited to become the first woman passenger to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a plane The flight took more than 20 hours – about three times longer than it routinely takes today to cross the Atlantic by plane Earhart was twelve years old before she ever saw an airplane, and she didn’t take her first flight until 1920 But she was so thrilled by her first experience in a plane that she quickly began to take flying lessons She wrote, “As soon as I left the ground, I knew I myself had to fly.”

After that flight Earhart became a media sensation She was given a ticker tape parade down Broadway in New York and even president Coolidge called to congratulate her Because her record – breaking career and physical appearance were similar to pioneering pilot and American hero Charles Lindbergh, she earned the nickname “Lady Lindy.” She wrote a book about her flight across the Atlantic, called 20 Hrs, 40 Min

Earhart continued to break records, and also polised her skills as a speaker and writer, always advocating women’ s achievements, especially in aviation Her next goal was to achieve a transatlantic crossing alone In 1927 Charles Lindbergh became the first person to make a solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Five years later, Earhart became the first woman to repeat that feat Her popularity grew even more and she was the

undisputed queen of the air She then wanted to fly around the world, and in June 1973 she left Miami with Fred Noonan as her navigator No one knows why she left behind important communication and navigation instruments Perhapsitwas to make room for additional fuel for the long flight The pair made it to New Guinea in 21 days and then left for Howland Island, a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean The last communication from Earhart and Noonan was on July 2, 1937 with a nearby Coast Guard ship The United States Navy conducted a massive search for more than two week but no trace of the plane or its passengers was ever found Many people believe they got lost simply ran out of fuel and died

THE HUMAN SCARECROW

Being told to bring a deckchair and a good book for the first day in a new job might not be the kind of advice you’d expect to receive from your new boss, but that’s exactly the advice Jamie Fox was given when he took up a post to help out a local farmer

Fox, twenty-two, a music graduate from Bangor University, uses a range of musical instruments to scare off partridges that have been destroying crops because ordinary scarecrows don’t quite seem up to the job Despite working from 7.30 a.m to 4.00 p.m for a minimum wage, Fox, who is saving up to finance a trip to New Zealand, is quite content with his unique position Indeed, he’d much rather be out in the open air reading and playing instruments, he says, and time passes much quicker than sitting at home doing nothing and claiming unemployment benefit

Fox can anything he likes to pass the time As well as playing musical instruments and reading to relieve the monotony, other perks of the job include doing Sudoku puzzles, observing the wildlife and daydreaming He does, however, need to get out of the comfort of his chair occasionally to scare the partridges off the fields And although the work is far from lucrative, some of Jamie’s friends, including those with more generously paid jobs, are reportedly envious of his position and the fact that he spends the best part of the day doing largely as he pleases

His employer, farmer William Youngs, claims that he was forced to take someone on as a human

scarecrow after the partridges didn’t respond to more traditional methods of frightening them away Since losing thirty acres worth of crops to the birds at a cost of thousands of pounds, Youngs has tried a variety of
