Time allowed: 45 minutes A LESSON DESCRIPTION

I Aims: To help students (Ss) practice reading and speaking skills II Objectives: Ss will be able to

* Knowledge:

- remember some vocabulary related to practices and beliefs of the New Year: strike, cheer, bow, present, shrimp, move backwards…

- use Will/Won’t and Should/Shouldn’t to express intentions and advice * Skills:

- guess the meaning of some new words from the context

- understand the passages (Textbook – p.64-65) to fulfil the reading task - talk about some common practices and beliefs of the New Year

* Attitudes:

- give more love to their traditions at Tet in their country

- be aware of a variety of practices and beliefs of the New Year in Viet Nam and in other countries

* Competences:

Ss are expected to have the competences as follows: - Self-control

- Independent learning - Collaboration

- Problem-solving III Ways of teaching: + T- Wc

V Preparations for the lesson:

Ss: revising the future simple tense and structure “should / shouldn’t + V”; preparing some pictures of some popular beliefs about the New Year

VI Anticipated problems:

- Some of the Ss may have difficulty in talking about beliefs of the New Year

- Solution: At the end of the last lesson, Ss were assigned to work in groups, preparing their pictures/acting and the beliefs they are going to talk about

II Warm-up (4 minutes) Activity 1: Game: Passing the ball

Purposes: To break the ice, check Ss’ homework on several ways to celebrate New Year of some groups of people, and introduce the new lesson

- T: “Would you like to play a game? Ok Let’s play the game “Passing the ball”

- T explains the rules of the game: + “Pass the ball to your next

classmates while you are listening to the music”

+ “You with the ball in your hands at the moment that the music stops will answer the questions”

+ “After answering the four

questions, you will find out the three hidden children”

- T asks Ss some questions about the children

Game: Passing the ball Questions and keys

Do the H’Mong start the New Year by sticking feathers of a killed rooster to the drawings of the Sun?

“In today’s lesson, you will fulfil some reading and speaking tasks related to practices and beliefs of the New Year in America, China and Vietnam”

+ They are Russ, Wu and Mai.

+ Russ is from the USA Wu’s from China and Mai is from Viet Nam.

+ They’re talking about their New Year.

III Pre-reading (7 minutes) Activity 2: Vocabulary

Purpose: To help Ss learn some new words/ phrases in the passages (Textbook – p 126)

- T presents the new words / phrases - Ss practice reading the new

vocabulary (paying attention to the stressed syllables) chorally after T and then some individuals take turns to read the words / phrases in front of the class

1 Vocabulary: (on the black board)

- to strike (midnight)

[video clip / eliciting]

- to cheer

[video clip / eliciting]

- to bow [action]

- to present = to give [synonym]

- shrimp (n) [picture] - to move backwards

[picture / eliciting] Activity 3: Slap the board

Purpose:

- To help Ss remember the active vocabulary that they have just learned

- T: “Another small game for you – SLAP THE BOARD”

- T gives instructions and lets Ss play the game

IV While-reading (12 minutes) Activity 4: Matching

Purpose: To develop Ss’ ability of guessing new words from the context - T: “Russ, Wu and Mai are talking

about celebrating New Year in their countries Read the three passages silently for about minutes, guess the meaning of the words in the contexts so as to the matching exercise”

- Individuals the matching exercise in the handouts and then share their answers in close pairs - One student is called to the matching on the board

- T gives the keys

- T reads these words aloud and asks Ss to repeat in chorus

- Some Ss take turns to read the words again

Activity 5: Say who the statements refer to

Purpose: To help Ss fulfil the reading task

- T: “Please re-read the passages in silence and identify who the

following statements refer to”

- Ss give out their answers - T gives feedback

- Ss give out their answers - T gives feedback

Purpose: To develop Ss’ speaking skill, using I Will/Won’t to express intentions

- T: “Look at these activities again They are the practices and beliefs of the New Year mentioned from the passages in As you know, to express intentions, we use

Will/Won’t + V Please say which ones you will/won’t do this New Year

- T calls Ss to read out the examples

- Ss (in close pairs) the

1 Expressing Intentions, using WILL / WON’T

Examples :

Activity 8: Talk about what you should or shouldn’t at Tet

Purpose: To develop Ss’ speaking skill, using should/shouldn’t to give advice

- T: “To give advice, we use should/shouldn’t There are some suggested activities here Please talk about what we should or shouldn’t at Tet”

- T calls students (in the roles of Student A, B, C and D) to read the example sentences in front of the class

- Ss work in groups, making their own sentences for about one and a half minutes - One group is called to give their discussion in front of the class

- T: “What should you at Tet? (Some Ss answer ) - T: “What shouldn’t you at Tet?

(Some Ss answer ) - T gives encouraging comments

2 Giving Advice, using SHOULD / SHOULDN’T

+ Reading (skills: reading for details; guessing meaning from context) about New Year in different countries

+ Speaking: - Express Intentions, using WILL / WON’T - Give Advice, using SHOULD / SHOULDN’T

VII Homework (1minute) - Write a list what you should and shouldn’t at Tet - Prepare for Skills

+ Review the structures of will/won’t and should/should’t

Student A: We should make a wish.

Student B: I agree
