Computers can lots of jobs They can maths, store information, or play music You can use a computer to write or to play games What you know about the history of computers?

The first computers were very big They were bigger than the computers we have now In fact, they were the size of a room! They were so big that people didn’t have them at home Early computers could also simple maths, like a calculator In the 1930s, Alan Turing had the idea for a computer you could program to different things

In 1958, Jack Kilby invented the microchip Microchips are tiny but can store lots of information They helped to make computers smaller In the 1970s, computers were smaller and cheaper so people started to use them at home In the 1980s, computer games were very popular Lots of people bought computers just to play games

In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, which is a way to organise information on the internet Now people all over the world can look for and share information on websites

Today people can use smartphones to play games, email and go on the internet In the past, a simple computer was much bigger, more expensive and worse than computers these days Now they can go in your pocket and are much easier (and better) to use!

Text 2: Video Games

I come from a family where everyone loves playing video games

A My Dad is really keen on first-person-shooters, such as Call of Duty and Fortnite He usually plays on his computer for a few hours every evening after work and at the weekend He also plays puzzle games on his mobile or tablet when he has free time He says games, especially puzzle games, are really good for your mind and help you to become more intelligent Playing games also helps him to relax after a stressful day He rarely plays games on a console though, as he prefers to use a keyboard and mouse B However, my sister is very different She hates to play first-person-shooters and instead,

she prefers to spend time playing simulation games like The Sims or role-play games like Dragon Age She loves the stories in role-playing games and will usually play the games several times through so she can explore it completely She is at university now and often works very hard during the work on her studies, so at the weekend she can usually be found on her computer relaxing She has been playing The Sims, her favourite game for fourteen years now, since she was years old!

C David, my brother, is very similar to my Dad and sister in the games he likes He enjoys playing different kinds of computer games and he can usually be found with his laptop playing games He is very lazy though and never does his college homework He says that if he becomes one of the best gamers, he can earn a lot of money He plays an online game called League of Legends and works with other people in tournaments He has not won any money yet, though

Text 3: How Paper is Recycled

We use paper every day - from exercise books, worksheets, magazines and comics to food packaging and toilet paper In one year the world uses 400 million tonnes of paper That’s a lot of trees chopped down to produce our paper! That is why it is important not to waste paper and to try to recycle as much paper as we can

What is recycling?

Recycling is when a material, such as paper, is used to make something new For example, old newspapers can be used to make new toilet paper

How is paper recycled?

1.Paper and cardboard are put into recycling bins

3.At the recycling factory the different types of paper are sorted before being processed

4.The paper is then cut up, washed and made into pulp It is filtered, cleaned and the ink removed

5.Pulp is made by mixing the paper and water The pulp is then sprayed onto large sheets and rolled on heated rollers to make them thin and remove excess water

6.The paper is dried and rolled and ready to be sent to other factories to make new products
