Glossary of Terms
Active Cell – The cell in which you are entering information, or the current location of the cell pointer
Address Bar – A field in a browser into which you type a web site address or a search term. Windows Explorer also includes an address bar which shows the current folder and its location in the file directory
Alignment – The positioning of text or the contents of a cell relative to the right and left boundaries; for example, left, right, or centered
Animation Effects – A feature that allows you to control how and when specific objects on a slide appear when you are presenting a slide show
Application – A program used to produce work. You use an application to create documents or spreadsheets or presentations Bcc – Blind carbon copy; a field in the header of an email message. Other recipients of the message will not see who was named in the Bcc field
Blog – An online journal in which you can write your thoughts or share information about a particular topic. Some blogs allow others to post a comment on your entries
Bookmark – Marks the location of an item such as a web page so that you can quickly return to it later Boolean Operators – Words or symbols you can use to narrow the results of a search
Browse – To view and navigate through a structure of folders and files to find a specific file or location on a storage device Browser Home Page – The page that displays by default when you open the browser
Button – An icon in a Ribbon group or Dialog box representing a specific feature or function. Click on the button in order to activate the feature or function
Card Readers/Writers – Devices that can read and write data on flash memory cards
Cc – Carbon copy; a field in the header of any email message. Other recipients of the message will see who was named in this field
Cell Address – The location description consisting of a column letter and a row number that specifies an individual cell in a table or worksheet
Cell Range – A section of a worksheet containing two or more cells
Cell Reference – The use of a cell address or a range of cell addresses in a formula
Cell Phone – A telephone that uses a cellular network to transfer voice signals and short text messages. Also called mobile phone
Center – To position text an equal distance from the left and right boundaries of the cell or page that contains it Character – A character can be a letter, number, or other piece of data
Chart – A pictorial representation of numeric data
Chat – A form of realtime communication that takes place in a window where people type messages to each other
Check Box – An option in a dialog box used for selecting or activating items or features. If checked, the feature is activated. If unchecked, the feature has been turned off
Clear – To remove information or formatting and comments from selected cells and leaves the cells blank Click – To point the mouse at an item and then quickly press down and release the mouse button ClipArt – Pictures and drawn objects that you can freely insert into documents
Client – A computer that requests a service or resource from another computer on a network
Clipboard – A temporary storage location used to transfer data between documents and between applications
Close – To shut down a document window or application window. You can also close a window, dialog box, or task pane Column – A vertical region in a table or spreadsheet, separated from other columns by a grid line, and denoted by one or more alpha letters per column. Excel has a maximum of 16,384 columns

Command Bar – The bar appearing below the Address Bar in Windows Explorer that displays a list of commands for viewing or managing your files
Command Button – A clickable button onscreen that may have a picture or icon, or a word appearing on its face. The OK, Cancel, Close, or Print buttons are examples
Compressed File – A file that has been processed in a way that reduces the amount of space it takes up on a disk. You would compress a file before sending it as an email attachment
Contact – An address entry for a person you communicate with in an email or instant messaging program Control Panel – Dialog box in the operating system where you can view and manipulate basic system settings
Copyright – The law that governs ownership of an original work, grants certain rights to the owner, and makes it illegal for you to use the work without the owner’s permission
Central Processing Unit (CPU) – see Microprocessor Chip
Credentials – The combination of a user name and password that identifies you to an operating system or network
Cursor – A cursor marks the position in a document on the screen where text or a graphical object will be placed. A cursor can appear in many different forms: an Insertion Point, a blinking underline, or a blinking square
Cut – The editing process of removing text or items from a document and transferring them to the Clipboard so that they can pasted into another location
Cyberbullying – Making threats, spreading rumors, making hurtful comments or taking other actions meant to hurt or harass someone using an online setting such as email or Facebook
Default – The standard settings that are in effect unless you change them Delete – To remove a selected item
Desktop – The screen that opens when you log on to a computer and are ready to begin working. Desktops usually include colorful backgrounds, icons, buttons and a status bar
Dialog Box – A window in which multiple items may be selected or activated
Dialog Box Launcher – The small ‘x’ at the bottom of a group of commands on a Ribbon Tab. Click it to open a dialog box or a task pane for more options
Document – A term used to refer to files created by almost any application program. Letters, memos, book reports, spreadsheets, and presentations are all loosely called “documents.”
Domain Name – A textbased name you enter into the address bar in your browser to access a specific web site Domain Name System (DNS) – A service that maps unique domain names to specific IP addresses
DoubleClick – The process of clicking the left (or primary) mouse button twice quickly Download – To receive a file from a server on a network or on the Internet
Drag – To reposition an item using the mouse
DropDown List – Displays a list of choices when you click the arrow for the list
Edit – The process of changing or manipulating (adding, removing, formatting, and so on) text or objects
Email Address – An address that you use to send and receive email messages. The address includes an account name followed by the @ symbol followed by a domain. A typical email address might be student@yourschool.edu
Email – Electronic Mail; the most widely used application of the Internet
Embedded Operating Systems – Manage and control operations on the specific type of equipment for which they are designed, such as in a piece of medical equipment
External Storage – Storage devices that are not inside the computer. External hard drives, flash drives and memory cards are examples of external storage
Favorites – A folder in Internet Explorer where you store links to frequently visited web sites. Favorite links enable easy one click access
File – Stored content that has been grouped together and stored with a name. Documents, workbooks and presentations are examples of files
File Name – The name of a file. There are two parts to a file name, the base name and the extension
(6)File Name Extension – A suffix added to the base name of a file. Operating systems and application programs use file name extensions to recognize the format of a file and identify which program created it
Fill – The process of selecting a color or pattern to fill a shape such as a rectangle, line, or star Flaming – To attack someone verbally online
Flash Drive – Flash memory data storage device integrated with a USB connector. Also called a jump drive or a thumb drive Folder – A container that stores files and other folders; also known as a directory or subdirectory
Font – A specific typeface applied to numerals, symbols, and characters Font Size – The height and width of printed characters
Footer – Text that repeats at the bottom of every page and may include page numbers
Formatting – Characteristics that control how an item appears. Number styles, fonts, and colors are examples of formatting GUI – Graphical User Interface; a user interface that lets you use menus and clickable buttons or icons to start programs, move files, or perform other tasks
Graphics – Illustrations such as pictures, clip art, charts, text boxes, shapes, and so on, that can be inserted into a document Handheld Operating Systems – Scaleddown operating systems used on Smartphones and tablets
Handles – The small boxes surrounding a selected picture or object
Hard Disk – Central storage location inside the computer; can use magnetic or solid state technology Header – Text that repeats at the top of every page in a document
Hibernate – A lowpower state in laptops which turns off the display and system, but keeps them in “standby” condition Hyperlinks – Words or phrases, usually underlined, that display on one page, but move you to another page when you click them
Icon – A graphical representation of various elements in Windows, such as disk drives, applications, and documents Indent – A temporary left and/or right margin, usually in effect for one paragraph at a time
Insert – An editing function that enables you to add text while moving existing text to the right. You can also insert entire columns or rows into tables or worksheets
Insertion Point – The place where text will be inserted as you type
Instant Messaging – Communicating with someone else in real time using a program that enables you to type messages to one another
Internet – A global network of computers. It is a large nonadministered network that no one person or organization owns or controls
Internet Service Provider (ISP) – A company that provides you with a connection to the Internet IP Address – A unique address that identifies each computer connected to a network or to the Internet
Junk Mail – Mail that you receive that you did not ask for. Usually it is from people promoting or selling products or services Labels – Text entries that consist of alphabetic and numeric characters entered into a spreadsheet. Cells that contain labels cannot be used in calculations
Legend – A box on a chart that explains the meaning of each line in a line chart, or bar in a bar chart
Linux – A popular operating system that is freely available and modifiable. Linux is widely used on supercomputers and high end servers, and is very popular with programmers
List Box – A rectangular box that contains a list of choices from which you can make a selection
Log Off – To sign out of the operating system or a network and shut down your account until you log on again
Log On – To provide a user name and password that identifies you to the operating system or to a network and allows you to access your account on a computer
Margin – The white space or area from the edge of the paper to the text
Maximize Button – The small box at the right of the title bar used to display the window full screen to occupy the entire desktop

Menu Bar – The horizontal bar containing the names of all the application menus
Menu – A list of items used to execute commands, display dialog boxes, or display another menu
Microprocessor Chip – A silicon chips that performs the calculations and logical operations that run the computer; also referred to as the Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Minimize Button – The first small box at the right of the title bar used to temporarily close the window, replacing it as a button on the taskbar
Mini Toolbar – A small toolbar that appears only when you select text. As you move the mouse pointer over the toolbar, it becomes a functioning toolbar with commonly used text formatting options
MMS – Multimedia Messaging Service; a protocol that allows you to send a text message to more than one person, or to include multimedia content in a text message
Mobile Apps – Programs designed to run on mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones
Mouse Pointer – An icon (usually shown as an arrow) on the screen that follows the movement of a mouse or other pointing device
Multimedia – content that includes images, sounds, or video
Navigation bar – A bar (usually across the top or down the left side of a web page) that helps you navigate a web site by providing links to various areas of the site
Network – A collection of computer which are connected to one another in such a way that they can share information Notification Area – Found on the right side of the taskbar, this area includes a clock and icons that communicate the status of certain programs and settings
Office Clipboard – A place in memory where information is stored temporarily. Applications in the Office suite share a Clipboard, allowing you to copy and paste information between different files and different applications
Online Profile – A collection of information about you that usually includes your name, picture, a list of interests or hobbies Other people can view your profile to learn about you
Open – The process of activating a file and showing its contents on the screen so that you can work with it Operating System – A program that controls all hardware and application software on the computer Optical Drive – A drive designed to read CDs or DVDs; data is written and read using a laser
Option Button – An item that appears in a dialog box that allows a user to select one item from a group of choices Orientation – The direction of the paper for text flow; In portrait orientation the page is taller than it is wide. In landscape orientation, the page is wider than it is tall
Page – The number of lines designated to create a page of data. Word automatically divides the document into pages based on the margin settings, the line spacing and the size of text
Page Setup – The feature that determines how a program displays and/or prints the file contents. Page setup includes, margins, headers, footers, gridlines, and so on
Paragraph – A set of text or items from one paragraph mark to another Paste – The editing function of placing cut or copied data into a new location
Password – A unique string of characters that must be provided along with a user name before a logon is authorized Path – The route to follow to get to the location of a specific file
Pinned Programs – An area of the Start Menu where frequently used programs can be ‘pinned’ to enable easy access to them
Piracy – The unauthorized use or reproduction of someone else’s work
Plagiarism – The process of using information created by another person and presenting it as if it were your own work Posting – When you upload a picture or a comment or other text to an online site where others can see it and/or respond to it For example, you can post to a blog, a forum or a social network site
Print – The process of sending a file to the printer, complete with printer instructions for the format and type of text Protocol – A set of communication rules that enable computers to communicate with one another
Quick Access Toolbar – A small toolbar located above the File tab. By default it contains the Save, Undo, and Redo

Random Access Memory (RAM) – Memory used for the temporary storage of information. RAM can store data only while the computer is on
RealTime Communication – Communication that takes place instantaneously. There is no delay between the sending of the communication by one party and the receiving of the communication by the other party
Recycle Bin – A temporary storage area for deleted files. Deleted files remain in the Recycle Bin until you restore them or you empty the recycle bin
Replace – A feature that enables you to find text and then substitute other text for it
Restore Button – You can use this button to return a window to its previous size (before it was maximized)
Ribbon – A command bar that appears at the top of an Office application window. Located directly below the title bar, it provides access to commands and features
Ribbon Tabs – In the Ribbon, commands are arranged into tabs. Each tab contains commands that relate to a specific type of activity such as inserting objects or changing the view
Row – A horizontal region in a table or spreadsheet, separated from other rows by a grid line, and denoted by number per row Excel has a maximum of 1,048,576 rows
Ruler – Located below the Ribbon in Word or PowerPoint; the ruler is a guide that helps you perform functions such as changing margins, or setting tabs and indents quickly
