In Chomskyan Standard Theory or Model of Aspects, syntax is primary while meaning is just interpretive. In generative semantics, meaning, which is generative, determines grammatical features. Although generative semantics was strongly criticized in the late 1970s, its legacy is worth further investigating. For example, there is a formal representation at sentential levels corresponding to the logical representation. Another concept that should be considered is the lexical decomposition. As an expansion of the generative semantics theory, the theory of interpretive meaning concludes that theories of interpretive meaning can be applicable just to the surface structure, rather than the deep structure.
