at present writing a book on early Indian Ocean trade Amal Rassam (Ph.D., University of Michigan) is a cultural anthropologist and professor of anthropology at Queens College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York She has conducted research in a number of Middle Eastern communities, especially in Iraq and North Africa, with a focus on ethnicity and social and political organization She is the author of numerous articles, including "French Colonialism as Reflected in Male-Female Interaction in Morocco" in the Transactions of the New York Academy of Sciences (1974) and "Ethnicity, Cultural Discontinuity, and Power Brokers in Northern Iraq: The Case of the Shabak" in American Ethnologist (1974) She is also the coauthor, with Daniel G Bates, of the textbook Peoples and Cultures of the Middle East Associate Volume Editors Candice Bradley (Ph.D., University of California, Irvine) is a cultural anthropologist and assistant professor of anthropology at Lawrence University, in Appleton, Wisconsin She is also a senior research fellow at the Population Studies and Research Institute, University of Nairobi Her doctoral dissertation was a cross-cultural study of children's work in ninety-seven cultures Her recent research focuses on women, power, and fertility in Western Province, Kenya Her publications center on these and related topics and include, most recently, the articles on demography and division of labor in the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Cultural Anthropology Laurel L Rose (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley) specializes in
