and surely, the progress toward e-books can only move forward Besides, technical development and sophistication of reading devices provide users a more interesting and different experience when using e-books Currently, there is no official statistics on numbers of e-book users in Vietnam, but according to Mr…., Tiki Shop CEO, hundreds of ereaders was sold in peak months, which demonstrates that using e-books is becoming a habit of Vietnamese In the field of education, e-books have increasingly proved its important roles E-books provide substantial advantages to both lecturers and students such as 24/7 access, simultaneous user access, wider selection, immediate update, full text searching, and so on Many lecturers and students recognize that e-books offer an ideal opportunity to enhance their research experiences In Vietnam, although ebook has not been considered as a main learning instrument, it is still used widely by students in their academic activities, especially by the ones whose subjects are taught mainly in English like students of the Faculty of Business English (FBE), Foreign Trade University (FTU) This is because most of textbooks used in the FBE curriculum are foreign ones which are not popular or even not appear in Vietnam's book market Moreover, the FBE students need to conduct tens of reports Yahoo! is an American multinational internet corporation headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, United States Tiki Shop is a one of the largest e-reader distribution channels in the Southern Vietnam and class assignments each semester, and almost all of them are in English Hence, it is necessary for them to refer to other sources, of which e-books account for a large percentage The FBE lecturers also recommend their students to use electronic version of some books for more comprehensive understandings In order to have an overview on the usage and the increasingly important roles of e-books in academic study of FBE students, the author has chosen to write up this graduation thesis with the topic "E-book usage in the study of the Faculty of Business English students: current situation and recommendations to promote its effectiveness" Objectives of the thesis The thesis aims to capture an overview of e-book usage and to provide some recommendations to promote its effectiveness in the K47 to K50 FBE students’ study Specifically, the research questions are stated as follows: (1) How are e-books used in the study life of the FBE students from K47 to K50? (2) How the FBE students from K47 to K50 evaluate e-book and its effectiveness in their study life? (3) What recommendations should be made to promote effectiveness of e-book usage in the study life of FBE students from K47 to K50? Scope of the thesis Due to limited time and resources, this thesis focuses on providing an overview of e-book usage in the study of FBE students from K47 to K50 and some general evaluation on this matter from these students, no thorough analysis is made Besides, only students from K47 to K50 of the Faculty of Business English, Hanoi Foreign Trade University are involved in the conducted survey, results from students of other courses or faculties or universities (if any) will not be used Methodology To write up this thesis, the author uses both desk research and field research as the methodology The desk research is used to collect available information about e-books and relating issues Besides, the author also conducts a survey with a structured questionnaire (See Appendix 2) which will be distributed directly to each of 265 students of FBE from K47 to K50 Those who can not take part in this survey in the class will be sent an online version with the same structure and content through their email addresses More details will be discussed later in Chapter II of this graduation thesis Structure of the thesis Apart from the introduction, conclusion, table of contents, appendixes, list of abbreviations, and list of tables and figures; this graduation thesis will be divided into three chapters: Chapter provides an overview of e-book Chapter presents and analyzes data and information collected from survey on current situation of e-book usage in the study of the FBE students from K47 to K50 Chapter provides findings and recommendations to promote the effectiveness of e-book usage in the study of the FBE students from K47 to K50 CHAPTER 1: AN OVERVIEW OF E-BOOKS 1.1 Definitions of e-book E-content in general and e-book in particular play such a significant role in the digital era E-book is coming to be a new trend in the world of Information and Communication Technology (ICT); the use of e-book over regular paper book has also witnessed a dramatic rise "The e-book era is going to be one of the incredible innovations and unlimited opportunities, the whole world racing toward this new draw!” said Mr James Macfarlane, CEO of Easypress Technologies Limited Company3 at E-books and E-content 20114 Understanding precisely about "What is e-book?" is essential to use it properly as well as take full advantage of opportunities created by this modern kind of book E-book is a young medium and its definition is still a work in progress, emerging from the history of the print book and evolving technology; and as a result, e-book has been defined in various ways Simply, e-book is an electronic version of a print book, hence “E” for electronic (FASTmaketingPlan.com, 2012); or e-book is digital reading material that one views on a desktop or note-book computer or on a dedicated, portable device with a large storage capacity and the ability to download new titles through a network connection (Cox, Andrew and Mohammed, 2001) PC Magazine Encyclopedia (2012) defines e-book (Electronicbook) as “The electronic counterpart of a printed book, which can be viewed on a desktop computer, laptop, smart phone or e-book reader” Besides, Eileen Gardiner and Ronald G Musto (2010, p.164) in "The Oxford Companion to the Book" suggested a more detail definition of e-book: An electronic book (also e-book, Ebook, digital book) is a text- and image-based publication in digital form produced on, published by, and readable on computers or other digital devices E-books are presented visually or aurally, with the audio book as a precursor to, and limited exemplum of, electronic publishing's potential Easypress Technologies Limited Company is a global supplier of XML technology - based Digital ePublishing software located in New York, USA; Guildford, UK; and Toronto, Canada E-books and E-contents 2011 is a part of e-content - related series held by the University College London Department of Information Studies The theme in 2011 was “E-books revisited: where are we now?” Components other than text have been considered enhancements, including multimedia (sound, images, and film/video/animated graphics) Based on these suggestions, e-book can be defined in a simple but quite adequate way as follow: An electronic book (variously, e-book, Ebook, digital book) is a book in digital form, but consists of many components, including multimedia, and can be read on computers or other electronic devices such as e-readers, tablets, smart phones, and also on some mobile phones 1.2 Origin and evolution of e-books 1.2.1 A brief history of e-books The invention of e-books is being questioned Some researchers suggest that the first e-book might be the Index Thomisticus prepared by Roberto Busa in the late 1940s Others believe that e-books had been developed in the mid-1960s, with the NLS project headed by Doug Engelbart at Stanford Research Institute, and the Hypertext Editing System and FRESS project headed by Andries van Dam at Brown University (Steven J Derose and Andries van Dam, 1999) Alternatively, ebooks are considered by some to be born in 1971, with the first steps of Project Gutenberg found by Michael Hart, a digital library for books from public domain (Cameron Chapman, 2009) Even being counted from the time of the newest hypothesis (i.e from 1971), e-book is more than 40 years old already; however, this duration is still a fraction if being compared with five century of development of print books In the 1990s, Internet became popular, making transference of electronic files much easier, including e-books However, e-books were not paid much attention until the online publication of Stephen King’s novella riding the Bullet in March 2000 Within 24 hours, the text had been downloaded by 400,000 computer users (Mahajan and Chakravarty, 2007) Since then, booksellers have begun selling books online within and outside their home country and posting books' description and excerpts on their websites Libraries have created websites as a virtual window, more and more e-libraries began coming into life Newspapers and magazines have begun being available online, as well as their archives Some journals have come to be only electronic to limit the costs of print publishing 50 3.2.3 Utilize prominent features of e-books As mentioned before, e-books own many prominent features in comparison with print books such as ability to share, to highlight and make note, to search within e-book, and to play multimedia Obviously, all of these features aim at creating the most convenience for users; however, they are not paid much attention by most of FBE students There are both objective and subjective reasons for this matter as defined before, but utilizing prominent features of e-books is needed to make full use of this modern technology, as well as a new tool in learning and teaching landscape The first one is the ability to share This feature is especially useful in the context of lacking trustworthy e-books as mentioned before With one click, users can share their favorite e-books with friends, family, colleagues, or even a whole community Hence, if many people are willing to share their own e-books, a huge source of e-books will be created; which help to make e-books become an integral part of modern life and of education field particularly There is a small comparison that can show the advantage of this feature Since after one click with maximum three seconds, it is possible to share one e-book with unlimited number of people; whereas, it takes time to share a print book with some people because it is necessary to wait others to finish their reading first So, within a community consisting of nearly 300 people (including both lecturers and students), just 100 FBE lecturers and students sharing their e-book can also build a great source of information for students and also lecturers themselves FBE students should change their attitude to e-book and its role to better use of it and to contribute to promote e-books’ role in the study of them The second one is ability to highlight and make notes Of course, this feature is not new when using print book, but with e-book, it can be considered as one of the great achievements of 21st century Students also understand the usefulness of highlighting and making notes in reading print books, but maybe they are not familiar with applying them in such a modern kind of books like electric ones Another possible reason is that e-books provide too many attractive features, so 51 students not pay much attention to the one sounding so traditional like this However, with readers who not want to write anything directly into a book as an expression of their respect to one of the most valuable things of human beings, they are highly appreciated this feature Moreover, when utilizing it with e-books, it will look more systematic, and help users easier to follow and understand what they are reading For those reasons, FBE students should not ignore this “sounding normal” feature, because it will surely bring a very different experience as well as help them much in having better learning results Multimedia feature makes a milestone in the development of e-books With this outstanding feature, e-book has differentiated itself from all traditional kinds of books Now, people can watch video, play sound, and take picture, etc within a small e-book; so reading books is no longer an uninspired and mediocre work Not only does this feature encourage people to reading more books, but also help them understand a matter more comprehensively Many experts recommend people to use e-books due to this prominent feature With FBE students, maybe not fully understand the benefits of this newly developed feature make these students not to spend much concern about it In Vietnam, it seem to result from people’s attitude to e-book, specifically, e-books are not received proper attention from society, including the government However, FBE students who are very keen on new learning and teaching methods need to become pioneers in utilizing e-books, particularly, its outstanding features Maybe most of them have not had a chance to experience this feature, but obviously, they should begin to discover and appreciate its usefulness right now 3.3 General resources for trustworthy e-books Surf the web and students can find countless sites offering free or small fee e-books However, some are spam sites fishing for dollars, some require memberships, and some are free and legitimate The following list is meant to help students with their own academic works, by offering links to respectable information sources on the web Inclusion on the list does not automatically mean 52 the absolute truth is on these websites, so always be critical and compare information between different sources 3.3.1 International resources http://www.ebrary.com Ebrary is a leading provider of e-books to libraries and researchers worldwide Established in 1999, the company offers more than 273,000 e-books from over 500 trusted publishers Ebrary was acquired by ProQuest in January 2011 Ebrary is the only e-book provider that enables customers to upload their own digital materials right from their computers with DASH! TM (Data Sharing, Fast) technology as well as apply cross-referencing with multiple online resources with InfoToolsTM technology The company also offers a dedicated mobile app for the Ipad, Iphone and Ipod touch (Allen McKiel, 2011) http://www.springerlink.com Springer introduced its e-book offering in August 2006 As of April 2012, the Springer e-book offering includes 51, 878 titles and 1,651 series with plans to add 4,000 titles per year Springer integrates its e-book and e-journal offerings through www.springerlink.com, which provides a single search interface for all subscribers www.springerlink.com also provides a simple mechanism to allow librarians to import MARC records for all Springer titles into OPAC Springer's e-book packages provide a comprehensive library, with more than 13 subject collections By providing its entire catalog in its e-book offerings, Springer has taken the lead in electronic publishing http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page Project Gutenberg offers over 38,000 free e-books with high quality All their e-books were previously published by bona fide publishers, and then digitized and diligently proofread with the help of thousands of volunteers Users can choose among free epub books, free kindle books, download them or read them online Those e-books are free in the United States because their copyright has expired They may not be free of copyright in other countries Readers outside of the United 53 States must check the copyright laws of their countries before downloading or redistributing those e-books Project Gutenberg also has a number of copyrighted titles, for which the copyright holder has given permission for unlimited noncommercial worldwide use http://englishtips.org/ As the name of this website, englishtips.org is a very useful electronic library for English learners, like the FBE students Although it is not diversified in term of categories like the above domains, englishtips.org is still known as one of the most famous sources of e-book, especially for those who concern to develop their English whether at intermediate or advance levels Englishtips.org was launched in 2005, and since then, it has developed with an incredible speed Currently, in the part of e-books, it provides 6259 course books and 7853 fiction books; and both of them are in English Users just need to register, and then they can enjoy tons of learning materials - all totally free 3.3.2 Vietnamese resources http://alezaa.com Alezaa is the largest copyrighted e-book provider of Vietnam Alezaa provides many free or pretty cheap e-books which usually equal to 30% of print books, some even equal to 10% of that of print books for computer, iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, etc Each e-book has a short review with a description It is very well categorized, with attractive interface Registration is required to access Alezaa's library, but it costs no fee Other Vietnamese resources Currently, publishing houses have been uploading electronic books on their websites such as Tre publishing houses (www.nxbtre.com.vn/doc-sach-mienphi.aspx), Alphabooks (www.alphabooks.vn/a/news?t=8), etc In addition, some Vietnamese universities have been developing their e-libraries, usually through the address: thuvien.(abbreviated name of university).edu.vn; for example, www.thuvien.ftu.edu.vn is the newly launched e-library of Foreign Trade 54 University Obviously, all of those sources of e-books provide high level of credit and trustworthiness to users 55 CONCLUSION E-books are becoming more and more important in modern life, particularly in teaching and learning landscape In the United States, e-books accounted for about 3% of the overall book market at the end of 2009 and that number increased to 7% in 2010 In Vietnam, in the past fifteen years, both the publishing of Vietnamese e-books and the introduction of foreign e-books have undergone tremendous changes in terms of quality, scale, form, and so on However, e-books have not been received proper attention from the Government and other entities such as publishers, online bookstores, device manufactures, users, etc; but surely, the development of e-books in Vietnam will become more mature as time passes by E-books exist in various formats and own many advanced features such as ability to share through the Internet, ability to highlight and make notes, ability to play sound, video, etc which not only enable users to experience a very new and fresh reading behavior, but also bring them a number of both tangible and intangible benefits E-books consists of many invaluable roles other than traditional ones, including restoring and improving reading culture which is being buried in oblivion, contributing to the global environment protection project, renewing traditional methods of teaching and learning, etc Basing on those fundamental information and knowledge on e-books, the author conducted a survey on current situation of e-book usage in the study of FBE students from K47 to K50 with the aim of having more understandings on how this new learning tool is used and how effective it is in context of the Faculty of Business English whose students are very active and especially always willing to learn new things After analyzing the survey results, some findings have been obtained, most of them are positive ones including high perception and evaluation of FBE students on e-book and its roles, co-existence of print books and e-books, extensive e-book usage in FBE students’ research and class assignments However, some limitations due to both objective and subjective reasons are also defined such as e-book usage reduction because of its shortcomings, or little attention of FBE students on e-book 56 new features Therefore, the author gives some recommendations with hope to be able to promote the effectiveness of such a useful education instrument like e-book in the learning process of the FBE students Identifying information needs; finding, evaluating, and selecting trustworthy sources of e-books; and utilizing prominent features of e-books are three suggestion provided to FBE students in particular to help them better use this newly born technology Besides, understanding the students’ need for knowing more sources of credible e-books, the author has searched and studied carefully to provide the students a list of trustworthy e-books’ sources (mainly are e-libraries) to help them gain more effectiveness in their working with e-books Due to limitations of the author’s knowledge as well as the limited time allowed for the writing of this thesis, mistakes are unavoidable Therefore, comments and recommendations from lecturers, students, and readers are highly welcomed 57 REFERENCES + Books Borgman and Christine L., 2000 From Gutenberg to the Global Information Infrastructure: Access to information in the networked world Cambridge: MIT Press Ranjit Kumar, 2005, Research Methodology: A Step - by - Step Guide For Beginners 2nd ed London: SAGE Publications Ltd Garduner, Elieen and Ronal G Musto, 2010 The Electronic Book In Suarez, Michael Felix and H R Woudhuysen (Ed), The Oxford Companion to the Book (p 164) New York: Oxford University Press International Encyclopedia of Information and Library Science (2nd ed.)
